    I have watched all of Matt's Gospel Tangents & Mormon Stories interviews. Even when it's info I know, I never get tired of hearing him talk. Absolutely fascinating stuff. I look forward to the day in 40 years when we get to learn about the internal politics of Hinckley 's Q15

    Mark Staker was the person who identified Black Pete as Peter Kerr.

    I am glad you demonstrated the different between Joseph and Brigham. The apostasy started with Brigham, the racist, polygamist, misogynist, shame of a man who duped a whole sect of Joseph's followers into accepting promiscuity as a doctrine, and built a telelstial kingdom in the SLC valley.

    INTERESTING stuff! I'm curious about others experiences. I'm glad my husband and I (Scandinavian ancestry) missed all that stuff growing up in the church. When when my husband was in HS in Utah he had a South American friend. When the ban was lifted in the middle of his mission in Manchester England they were actively teaching blacks with no proabitions at that time. Everyone believed all priesthood blessings would eventually be offered to all people sometime before the Judgement. A year younger than my husband, I was raised in Silicon Valley with jazz and Motown music played constantly in our home by a father born in San Francisco who had black buddies. My mother, also born there, had black school friends. I never heard that mixed race marriage was"bad." One of my parents best friends were a mixed race marriage. My parents were pleased with my boyfriend whose parents came from Mexico, who I dated for a year before he left on his mission. It seemed logical to my young mind that the scriptures meant mixed race marriages were how skin color changes. I had heard once or twice (not in church) about the fence sitting thing, but everyone I knew believed we all begin life innocent, and what mattered was how you lived your life no matter what color you were. I also always thought skin color was an earthly thing and in the next life everyone glows like resurrected people in scripture (white light is all the colors). We were all so happy when the ban was lifted.

    My favorite stories on this subject are when a mission president would call church HQ saying he just found out that one of his ordained missionaries had more than 1 drop of 'black blood' and asked for direction.
    "How long does he have left in the mission field?"
    "4 months."
    "I think you should study the matter more deeply. It should take about 6 months." 😅

    This book may finally trigger a full apology from the church on this issue.

    Black and white skins refers to Purity or lack of Purity and has nothing to do with skin color.

    • @paulblack1799
      @paulblack1799 3 месяца назад +1

      It does, today, and may have meant that anciently, but not in Mormon folk doctrine for at least 125 years. 😢

      You may think that purity had nothing to do with skin color, and that’s fine, but that’s not how the brethren viewed it or Black and Brown Latter-day Saints. I talk about this extensively in my book. Have a look.

      Bull. Back in the 80s they were still spouting curse of Cain racist crap.

      @@matthewharris7151The argument is that the brethren were misunderstanding an ancient text much like Protestants were misunderstanding the Bible when it came to the curse of Cain doctrine.

      @matthewharris7151 3 месяца назад +1

      I’m well aware of the argument-I just don’t find it convincing. It’s a cheap way to avoid a tough teaching. Apologetics don’t serve the church in my humble opinion. Also, the apologists could never publish their work outside of apologetic journals. There’s a reason why-it’s bad scholarship.

    This is a topic that is submersive and contentious.
    This episodes position is a liberal presentation of the topic. Definitely not the full scope of the subject nor the contextual historical narrative of present data
