To answer Ben's question about T-Rex vision (which was actually very good btw, *arguably* the best of any known vertebrate ever), because of the sheer number of known t-rex skulls out there, scientists were able to scan the braincase etc and compare it to modern relatives and other animals to reconstruct t-rex senses - Also the eyes were about the size of footballs, so ya know.
Yup - to answer his question precisely - they couldn't tell it was based on movement from fossil records, this particular fact was just made up for a sci-fi film about dinosaurs (along with the stuff about the size and relative intelligence of velociraptors and the idea of venom-spitting dinosaurs and so on.) And to contribute to British Menace's examples we can extrapolate about from things like their diet and behaviour - T Rex's had to be opportunistic carrion eaters that only visually interpreting things that move would not fit at all with this life of eating anything they came across including other animals' kills.
Slight correction: the vision based movement was in the Crichton books to begin with. It was first theorized to work like snakes/frogs in the JP book before being retconned in the second book.
