  • Please note that by mistake adhesive force in this lecture was used in place of cohesive force and cohesive in place of adhesive force.
Adhesion force: Attraction Between molecules of different type substance e.g. Water is attracted to other substances Cohesive force: Attraction Between molecules of same substance e.g. water is attracted to water
Herbicide Adjuvants: Advantages, Classification and Mode of Action
Adjuvants can be grouped into three general types
    1. Activators:Modify particle size and viscosity of the herbicide spray, evaporation rate, etc. Examples-Surfactants, wetting agents and oils (Crop oils, Dormant oils, Crop oil concentrates, Vegetable oils, Vegetable oil concentrate, Modified vegetable oil, Modified vegetable oil concentrate and Methylated seed oils)
    2. Spray modifiers : Affect the delivery and placement of the spray solution. Alter the physicochemical characteristics. Examples- Thickening agents (i.e., invert emulsions and polymers, anti drift agent), Stickers, Spreaders, Spreader-stickers, Foaming agents, Humectants and UV absorbents
3.Utility modifiers:Minimize handling and application problems. Maintain the integrity of the spray solution. Reduce foaming, increase solubility, modify pH, or reduce spray drift. Examples- Emulsifiers, dispersants, stabilizing agents, coupling agents, co-solvents, compatibility agents, buffering agents, antifoam agents, and ammonium fertilizers.
