Well two reasons.1. There is going to be a LARGE portion of people that will focus on this and will treat it as if it is a big deal, not like it is just a pissing contest. Distracting them from the big things happening which keeps them from keeping them FROM happening (if that make sense)2. IF the Trump administration is going to lie about something to obviously false and so minute, and people are going to believe it, it just spells disaster for things that do matter in the future and are much harder to prove.

It was a decent crowd by most standards, and the way people keep comparing it to the Obama inauguration turnout (which was absolutely monstrous due to his popularity and what he represented for civil rights) is quite unfair.
The problem here is how Trump himself has reacted to those comparisons. The fact he made his press secretary lie so blatantly about something so trivial tells me that a) his priorities are completely screwed up, and b) he isn't willing to pick his battles. It's a very bad sign.

I theorize it's due to the growing polarization and entertainment-focused element to today's news--if you report accurate or fair facts, it won't make you money, thus they pander to what a single side wants to hear. Satire gets views and interest for bring satire in of itself, so behind a facade of exaggerated characters and jokes, they report accurate facts.
