Installing A Brass Guitar Nut: Cut From Scratch.

- I think I murdered my nut slotting files with this one. Cutting a brass nut from scratch is time consuiming but worth it in the end. It looks beautiful installed and seems to work just fine. As for any tonal difference...??? I have no idea. Not to my untrained ear.
Just a couple of points - when copying the original nut don't presume it has the correct spacing. Also, rather than trim both ends of the nut when fitted, the nut can be slid over. The waste is trimmed off just the one side before fitting with a final clean up when in place. This gies a better appearance with less chance of marking the finish.

How often did you see MacGyver whit a hammer? Might I suggest a rawhide hammer and a set of welding tip cleaners (they are tiny round files and work great for nut slotting, not to mention cleaning out your welding tips). I think I'll go out to my tiny shop and make a brass nut for my Ovation Celebrity. Thanks for the vid.
I had a 1982 Guild M80 guitar with a brass nut and I loved it! Also loved the Black Shuck rendition at the end! 🎼🤘😆👍🎶
How does such a nice looking instrument end up with a rounded nut in a flat slot? Little wonder it didn't sound very good.

That is a stonking piece of wood. Nudges 'butterscotch' out of the way a bit with the subtle front pattern.

I'd always wondered about the minutiae of hand machining in a brass nut.
I'm putting together a Warmoth (the necks virtually play themselves!), & I'm hoping the Fender YJM brass nut is a drop in & walk.

Great job did you use any kind of adhesive on the nut please let me know if you get a chance thank you very much Sergeant Velez I have the same guitar seems to play well doesn't have no trouble with the nut but I've been thinking about upgrading it with a brass nut these guitars are pretty good for the price have excellent sound I have many types of guitars all the way from stratocasters telecasters high-end guitars this guitar is a good guitar and you can't beat the price I have a d'angelico 12 string electric guitar and the one corzet at that I have. I purchased it about 7 months ago and I cannot believe the song compared to some higher-end guitars that I have the Chinese are getting better and better and making guitars that's for sure I usually don't buy nothing is not American but I found one on eBay and I said he'll let me take a chance with it it turned out to be that I was a great guitar it is a great guitar. Very nice job considering the tricky material to work with.
It's high time you invest in a Dremel tool, or an arbor grinder. Most of the shaping work could have been done in a couple of passes. also radiused sanding blocks would have eliminated some of the guesswork from the shaping process.

Nice job....i sprayed mine with laquer for metals after i buffed it so that the air wont oxidize it and has to be polished to a shine every couple of weeks.....Now its shiny and perfect everytime hehe.

Hi.what do you think about as far as a brass nut or bone,i just got a U.S.A. Fender strat no a cheap one i payed $2200 au as i live in Sydney Australia,the standard strat HSS with the shawbucker humbucker.so far ive only replaced the stagared tunners for fender stagard locking tunners,do you think brass nut gives any more or less sustain,or is it down to looks.ide think if brass used with trem it would thenk the strings would work against the brass nut like a file,
the open note would be much brighter and have more sustain. the saddles play a part in the sustain of fretted notes as so does the frets its self. cheers.

Found an awesome trick to help you out there. When aligning your nut for height only radius sand it back and forth with some double sided sticky tape. Valhalla instant radius! Love what your doing. Would love to hear a nut made of Stainless Steel!
A lot of work for MacGyver this time! You know, there are already slotted brass nuts you can buy with even the right size.

I'm going back to blanks! I order precuts and they never seem to be measured correctly, and brass always needs work to get it fitted right anyway, so why not match the nut that came off by cutting it miself?

Good job cutting the nut. No doubt that brass is much harder to work with than more standard nut materials. The guitar looks really good for a kit guitar.

If I run staggered tuning machines, I run *LOCKING* Staggered Tuning Machines…now with a _Floyd Rose_ because of how locking tuning machines don’t have to be wrapped around the tuning peg multiple times, I’m not totally positive whether enough tension would be generated from the strings pulling against the tremolo springs because (and please understand what I mean) proper operation of a Floyd Rose or Floyd Style tremolo system *HEAVILY DEPENDS* on the perfect balance of the tension between the strings pulling against the tremolo springs… I, personally have a Crackle Finished _Jackson/Charvel Predator Custom_ running a Seymour Duncan Dimebucker in the bridge position (with a black _Chromatic Tuner_ pickup ring), a Seymour Duncan Duckbucker Bridge in the middle position & a Seymour Duncan hot stack Bridge pickup in the neck position, I’m running a Schaller SureClaw tremolo claw which allows to easily adjust the tension from the tremolo springs, 3 noiseless tremolo springs, I finally figured out how to make the Floyd rose tremolo work properly & by the time I get it working, mega divebombs & harmonic tremolo tricks became passé at the same time as women wearing big hair & hot pink men’s tank tops…

That string tree is triggering me. It looks home made. It's HUGE! And it overhangs way too much...especially on the bass side. I'd have thought, if that were part of thkit, it would have been pre drilled and cut somewhat accurately

In my opinion, that brass string tree has spoiled a beautiful looking guitar - makes it look very cheap! BTW, you did a great job in cutting and finishing the new nut!

U need a bag to sort out your running nose Which is like on all your videos. Dude the nut is a tad high. I have mine about 2 hairs of ov the first fret.. Very nice Tele btw. I like teles coz Wilko Johnson played one. U did a mega Job on the polish

Sometimes it takes a big pair to get things done....
I mean, it just seems so obvious that the nut material should have similar sonic qualities for open notes as fretted notes.

Brass nuts are to soft, ask Gibson how many they had to replace on the 2015 models.

Sorry to burst your bubble but, technically, those are not frets but are called fret wires officially no matter what the general public decides that they want to ignorantly call them. Putting the radius on the nut is just extra work that is not required.
100 years later......I can even imagine the pain in the ass to file and round down a brass nut. I'd go apeshit and want to break ALL the things.
