Having worked (as a volunteer) yeah, a lot of people manning booths are super cautious around people asking for free (expensive) stuff. It's hard to verify you are who you say without some expertise. If the event offered some kind of distinguishing ID that might be beneficial to getting free stuff (for promotion of course)
