The PWT remixes feel like they are someone impressively remaking the original songs years later in the gen 5 soundfont, maybe even better than someone random, because these remixes were made by people who knew how to push the limits of the engine. Learning and listening about these remixes today has helped me want to replay BW and BW2 many years after my original playthroughs.
the best part is its hardly even nostalgia. blue/gary/douche was just simply a very effective rival. and pretty much only silver has matched him in rivaling acumen
You have to realize that all of these rivals had different mindsets and goals in their journey but I get what you`re after. I have same opinion that some basic concepts in Pokemon have generally degenerated little by little over time and become more and more dull and repetitive. I will express my personal thoughts and opinions of every rival from gen 1 to 5 because I have no knowledge from beyond that. Gary/Blue: Was good in your category of rival that`s an ahole until the end he learned his lesson and admits his defeat. Silver: Was good in this category too (aholery until the end he realizes something) but it was executed differently and it had more complex backstory imo. May/Brendan: Were friendly rivals which was in its way refreshing for the series but they would have executed it better. Wally: A huge letdown and disappointment. He felt soft and little shallow/filler character imo who would have been a great character with better backstory. Barry: Was well presented/depicted character (in terms of behaviour f.e.) but he was mostly only an annoying and goofy dude so I don`t like him that much because his aholery (and thus character) made no sense to me. Cheren and Bianca: Were your friendly rivals but their characteristics are expressed better in their actions than f.e. in Hoenn games. N: Mysterious N defined totally different approach to rivals which was executed neatly. Hugh: Well structured character that was executed pretty okay but not in an outstanding way that differs greatly from earlier rivals. In other words, he worked out well but he had higher obstacles to pass through to get himself loved by many (If he had been f.e. the rival in 1st or 2nd gen game, he would be more likely a fan favorite of many). In conclusion, my list of favorite rival regarding my perceptions over the characters, their developement and how that developement was executed and considering the idea of a "good rival" in general terms (not in context of Pokemon) from gen 1 to 5: 1. Silver 2. N 3. Blue/Gary 4. Hugh 5. Bianca and Cheren 6. May/Brendan 7. Barry 8. Wally And remember this is my SUBJECTIVE VIEW though I`ve explained some reasoning behind this list. I am ethuastic to know and hear if someone else has different perspective on rivals overall or thoughs on rivals from gen 6 onwards.
Honestly, not even Silver. Silver is the only one that is as antagonistic, but by the end of GSC, I'm okay if Silver manages to get a win. He becomes a respectable trainer. And Blue is a _respectable_ trainer himself, but he is -the- rival. My lifelong rival, and no, he will never be allowed to have a W on me ever. You gotta beat the rival.

He's tricky here, but not impossible. The most problematic part of facing him in the PWT is that he has no set lead and starts with any one of his six, adding a certain layer of unpredictability that is only shared with Red.
I fought all the champions except for Lance and Cynthia in the singles format with a team of Garchomp, Archeops and Ferrothorn I was surprised at how easy Red and Blue were to beat, as I thought they’d be tougher to beat, especially the former. Alder was a step up from them and the Hoenn Champions were the ones I struggled with the most, especially Wallace But Cynthia or Lance may end up being harder for me if I ever go back to battle them
I never liked battling in Battle Frontier too much. I always enjoyed the Pokémon games for music, story, design, map, aesthetic, etc., but not battle frontier. But BW2 Championship. I couldn't put my DS down. This shit was mad addictive.
I was just listeing to classical musical and the beginning sounds just like the beginnnning of Dies Irae by Giuseppe Verdi, I am now convinced this theme was inspired by classical music and that's why its so epic.

When a Pokémon game has TWO versions of the OG Champion theme, one being this and the other locked behind a real life tournament, while both being so distinct despite being the same song and both are still good, you know the composers weren't messing around. Good stuff
I love this version so much more than the B/W version purely because it gave us back the chaos that is the intro to this song. Honestly I think the B/W version is probably better in the rest of it, but it took away the _most_ iconic (at least imo) part of the track and I can't forgive that. Anyway, frlg's version is still my favourite, but this one's pretty good

I think the original version fits the context of the original better - you're facing off your rival to settle the lifelong score, the suspense is killing you, and you try to use all the tricks you've learned on your separate journeys to get the other to slip up. BW2 version definitely fits the show-stopping final round of a tournament, though, and in general I listen to it more often. But the original was definitely more appropriate for the mood it set. FRLG is kinda in the middle, but it's not necessarily worse it just puts a different spin on the OG champion battle by leaning more into the grandness of the champion position and pokemon league than the suspense between you and Blue.
You know, both of the characters in the photo? If you took out the extra hair (The hair behind the hats), they both look like Red and Green/Blue/Leaf from Firered and Leafgreen! This music and photo makes me remember my first time I've laid my hands on my first pokemon game... It feels extraordinary!
