Personally i think that if they were to make a good reboot it would have to be set before saints row 1 during prohibition. It could be like playas ancestor or something and what he did during the "Golden age of gangsters" in a sort of Mafia-esque gameplay but with that weird but somehow also serious Saints Row style. There were intense debates back in HS over SR2 vs GTA 4. With SR2, SR wasn't just being seen as the closes GTA competitor, it was becoming a respected open world franchise within its own merit and started to be taken more seriously. They could've continued all that momentum with 3, instead, they went the complete opposite direction, became less serious, and sold out. Sure, it may have been a massive sales success, but the franchise quickly became stale afterwards as a result. Even then, all that could've been fixed if SR5 rebooted back in time as if nothing happened and it would work cause it's SR. Instead, we ended up getting the cringe Millenial/Z garbage that was completely out of touch.
I would have accepted the whole "it was a movie" farce like 4s DLC had done. I mean, the theme/idea is kinda played out but it would have been a lot nicer to find that it was a movie cause it opened more opportunities for the gang to go back to how they were in 1 and 2.

The Third has always been my favorite. 4 is fun as an upgrade to Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, but 3's cars are fun and fluid, and it gave the game a comedic spin from its previous GTA clone-esque predecessors' more serious vibes. 4 was funny, and I loved what they did in the last segment, because I love the '80s Transformers movie, but it felt like the jokes were more in-your-face, and some of the parody shifted to satire in an unflattering way.
