A true diamond of Detroit. Flash forward to 2019-plans are to turn I-375 back into a Boulevard by 2024 and the Brewster-Douglas projects that housed the displaced Black Bottom & Paradise Valley residents was demolished in 2014. The city should have left the beautiful, culture rich area as it was 50yrs ago.
This documentary of Hastings Street was very informative although I heard stories about Hastings street history from people who live here years ago about their experience. I was glad to hear about the history of Hastings Street and how it got started. Detroit is a jewel and people don't know it we have a lot of great history here
They hate to see black progress, but always want to complain about what black people are not doing or need to do. How is this any different from what happened to the people in Oklahoma that created black wall street. Both destroyed by racist.
They? Who is they? Get real man. The ghetto needed to go. All that happened was that Hastings street moved to 12th Street and all the jazz clubs and restaurants moved creating another vibrant black cultural center. The entire world would love to see black economic progress along the line of black athletic success. Look at all this country has done to help minorities and I am one as well. PS. There is no "THEY".
Very good and illustrative with great photographs, my only critique is the audio mix, wishing for the narrative to be a little more on top of the music soundtrack. It just makes it a little tougher to discern what the speaker's saying at times. . .
It was a trash ghetto filled with outdated housing and it should have been replaced. That said - it should have been rebuilt not cleared out for a highway.
I -375, from Jefferson, Hastings street was targeted; as for demolishing the social economic landscape, that was slightly favoring the African American community of the time..
I'm a former detroiter, I remember old folks speaking about hastings Street with relevance and awe. Thanks for the video 📹😀.
