Germanic vs Scandinavian Tribes: Religion History

- The Scandinavians and other Germanic tribes all worshipped the same gods. The norse religion is something we associate with the vikings but really, all the germanic peoples in Europe practiced this religion.

"That BASTARD Charlamagne". BEST description ever!
He was known as the "Sachsenschlächter" meaning the slaughterer of Saxons, as he invited them to unarmed peace talks, where he betrayed them and killed the defenseless Saxons. Of course, they try to avoid these facts in official history lessons. I didn't learn about that in German school, where Charlemagne was portrayed as the visionary true founder of Europe.

But after taking a 23 and Me test, I learned we specifically came from North Rhine-Westphalia. Since then, I've been learning everything I can about the germanic tribes and religion. So fascinating!

On another note, and if I may be so bold, might I suggest that you acquire a desk lamp or two (the shrouded type like the animated one shown at the beginning of Pixar's animated movies) and try placing them out of frame but directed at the wall above and in front of you (assuming the wall is white/off white). This will result in a soft, even fill light for your face. Currently you are heavily backlit (silhouetted) which is a shame, given that you come across as a confident and articulate speaker. Some experimentation may be required but It would be a cheap and easy way to raise the production value of your channel.

I grew up with some Germanic gods as a daily part of life. A thunder storm my Mom would bring up Thor and his hammer. It was like a background story to things, even though we went to a Christian Church.
Oh. Thor.
I always thought lightning was God taking selfies with me.
I have always loved to watch lightening and hear the thunder. The louder, the better. On the rare occasions we did get thunder storm or electric storms I would sneak out and watch the lightening, asking the storm for more, as it very entertaining to me - still is.
How is that possible?
German background,my grandmother always did the same.
Every Christian holiday is a germanic holiday. People still don't know this.
I'm from Brazil and my ancestors are from northern Germany ( Lower Saxony to be more precise), I've always heard stories about the old gods, the myths and specially about that bastard Charle Magne, i'm doing a lot of research to get to know better about my roots. I've even discovered that my Last name is a derivation of Widukind, the saxon warrior
Thanks for the video, it helped me a lot putting the pieces togheter.
The lower saxons are actually Widukind's tribe so the link has some feasibility. Lower Saxony is the actual saxon tribe, today's federal country of Saxony and its predecessor state are actually predominantly slavs of the pommeranians and wenden who were conquered and christianized by the saxons under otto the great and his father and sons. Eventually the main line died out in saxony in the male line and hence the Kurfürsten (prince elect title, the biggest german lords that got to elect the emperor) title and honours as well as the title of the lord of the saxons went to the surviving subbranch in their former eastern province which became therefore known as Saxons and Saxony. Heraldically you can always tell historic saxon areas by the use of the saxon steed (white steed on red background)

It's funny how you say that the German pagan religion never really died out.
My catholic cousin once asked my grandfather what the family religion was and he said we are not catholic, Lutheran or any other Christian religion. He said his grandfather was more pagan than anything else. He said that his grandfather gave tribute to ancestors and the forces of nature.
It might have been away to keep from being burned at the stake.
His grandfather grandfather was never part of any Christian churchs.
My grandmother said the same to me. She had prayers that had nothing to do with Christianity which puzzled me as a child. As an adult though, I have been on a mission to learn as much as possible the religion of my ancestors and I thank my Grandma for that.

Great video! I just wanted to point something out shown in the image displaying the origins of the different migrating Germanic groups. They didn't originate from north-eastern Germany, which was what was shown, but has been proven, based on recent studies, to have come from southern Scandinavia instead. This also proves what is said in the ancient Longobardic legends.
I'am not sure if that really is the case. I think you refer to the Lombard dna study. I'am convinced that all suebic germanic people have DNA similar to todays swedisch an especially west norwegian people.
But somehow they would have to get to southern Scandinavia first. I doubt they traveled through today Finnland .
In my opinion they traveled through today north Germany along the baltic coastline until they found Denmark. Then they traveled northward to southern Norway and southern Sweden. At one point they started to expand to the east, south and further to the north, founding the 3 germanic language groups.
Germanic people also spread to England (Anglo-Saxons). The Angles came from souther Jutland in Denmark, and the Saxons were from Sachsen (now called Nieder-Sachsen) in Germany,
Some of the weekdays in English are named after the old gods. Tuesday after Tyr (Tisdag in Swedish), Thursday after Thor (Torsdag in Swedish), and Friday after Frigg or Freja (Fredag in Swedish).
Wednesday is a bit off from the Swedish name (Onsdag in Swedish after Odins dag), but when you know the German name fro Odin, which was Wodan, the you can see that Wednesday is from Wodan's day.
I had to learn this at primary school in the 60s in Northern England...even my relatives...you could see who was Celt and who was Germanic...in size, hair colour...eyes colour...Yorksire was divided into 3 Ridings...which were used until around 1970...strange, when we entered the EEC...our coins and boundaries changed...I was in the West Riding, which was close to the River Don...that flowed to the Ouse then Humber...This became South Yorkshire...included Sheffield, Doncaster, Barnsley, Rotherham. This was the main coal mining and steel areas.
I’ve been in Yorkshire and Durham a lot. My parents divorced when I was about 6 years old, and my dad’s second wife was born in northeastern England. While I grew up n Sweden, we visited my stepmother’s relatives in Yorkshire and Durham.
The name Easter is a us due to the use of Eostre. The tall blonde fishnet wearing goddess. Her totems were the raven and the rabbit. You cam see the wood work in the ancient church with their seatings (pews ). The goddess is usually depicting extending the large red apple. Also I think from her the "easter" egg was a fertility gift encouraging young couples to have children.
In the other hand, middle eastern polytheistic religions had astaroth or similar goddess names. The word star or astra (meaning sky) derives from this goddess' name.
That's interesting to hear. In German Easter is called ''Ostern'' which is (as far as I know) directly derived from the Germanic Goddess Ostara. Ostara is the Goddess of spring and her symbols actually do include an egg (for fertility) and a rabbit (to be precise it's a 'moon rabbit').
Easter also came from "ishtar" she's a mesapotamian goddess of fertility
most of these fertility goddesses have their origin in a larger, for now mostly unknown indo-european religion, from the time the germanic people still lived on the steppes.
and where Eostre is the germanic word) Ostara is the celtic as the name of the celtic season is directly named after her )
Ishtar, astra, astarte or astaroth are merely names from other regions for the same goddess ;)
i know anat, astarte , ishtar and astoreth have long been confused with each other, because they come from roughly the same roots, yet to some astarte has akkadian roots, - Canaanite and Phoenician, even in some sources West Semitic, ishtar - sumerian mesopotamian, but both are of assyrian origin so maybe there is a possible explanation in the spoken dialects.
In Ancient Sumer she was also known as Inanna, but the most common thought is that Ishtar is the Akkadian counterpart of the West Semitic goddess Astarte, yet if you look closely at the pronunciation, Eostre, Ostara, Ishtar', Astra, Astardu, Astarte. they even sound alike, as in reference with the goddess of the night from egypt: Nut, in Old norse: Nótt or Nat (Both meaning: Night) and Nótt is spoken almost exactly the same way as Nut

Hi again! Since we have so few texts and sources from the Norse and Germanics I often go to the Vedic and early Persian texts. Considering the (Proto)Indo European heritage we share it’s quite likely that this is what the Norse and Germanic worldview looked like. And the similarities are immense.
I will look into this. Many gods and legends have also survived as fairy tales. Frau Holle from the brothers grimm was once a sky goddess called Hulda for example.
Absolutely. I learn more everyday when I look at those comparisons. I just wish I had more time to really get into those old texts. Its even more broad and complicated than the Norse sources

Great video! Christianization of my Suebi/Alemanni people took hundreds of years of a "syncretic" period where the Christians (through the Frankish occupiers) sent foreign missionaries to slowly erode our traditions, Christianizing them one part at a time but it was slow exactly because we held on to it longer than the Establishment historians would have us believe. Mostly in the 8th and 9th centuries were we fully Christianized - and even then its easy, especially what I know from the Catholic region of my ancestors (Ostalbkreis), to identify what is "Christian" as actually Heathen. The sacredness of springs and trees, and people continuing to go to them; the Maibaum; the various poles that were representations of the World Tree (much like the Saxons' Irminsul); Fastnacht traditions; folklore about Wodan, Holle and the Wild Hunt; the little wooden shrines throughout the countryside that were often visited more than churches, etc.. Much can be said of what survived among peoples in the Subconscious, like how we just seem to take to our landscape and our forests. The Heathen soul still resonates within a people long after they are officially converted.

The Nordic, Germanic and Slavic gods were in the same faith, before they separated us by changing religion, culture and creating new nations with new languages and names. That is how strangers cut our roots and quarreled with us. Now they rule the whole world while we are divided without the old faith.
Thanks for enlightening in history which have been suppressed.
Heya! Greetings from a German region called Odenwald*. As you´ve said at the end of your video some of the tales were much older and had a common source I might have some info you likely haven´t heard about.
Regarding the Sigurd´s saga we have three places that claim to be the one where Sigurd was slain.
We also have a folk tale about the place where Weyland/Wieland had his smithy.
To top that off a lot of people here (myself included)** have a strong signal in their DNA from a certain region in Sweden (Gävleborg) which genetic distance seems to relate to the Viking age. No one really really understands how this could´ve happened or can make anything out of this, of course. ***
But no one can be sure and as I state in my second footnote it seems people didn´t really care at all back then.
*If the name is related to the god is debatable though. One of the earliest descriptions called it Othenwald which doesn´t make the things any clearer. I follow the general consensus that the name derives from the Celtic derived "Itter" meaning water. However, one can´t be sure.
** In fact that was a rather surprising und unexpected find. I wouldn´t have expected that. But my genetic makeup is weird anyway (including, of course a strong German part, a strong Scottish component, which is as obscure as the Swedish one, also Italian, Spanish, Hungarian, Ukranian and Circassian stuff - besides some other rather interesting DNA). Seems to me that my ancestors didn´t care much for race and similar nonsense.
*** One guy of our ancestry project even claims he can pinpoint the Norse ancestry here to the warband of Hrorik of Dorestad - but even he has to admit that no one can be sure. Having seen the data I´ve got to admit he might have found at least something.

The land of the old saxons is Niedersachsen, not Sachsen.
Folks should remember that Charlemagne was himself, Germanic. He wasn't "Roman", per see, but instead, was FRANKISH-meaning, he was of Germanic descent.
built Achen in Germany
Yep and the only reason he pushed Christianity that strong is that his family of the Karolinger were the Hausmeier (huskarl) of the Merowinger dynasty.
The Merowinger had the Germanic king's Heil which means that by Germanic pagan religion and cultural norms the Karolingians could not usurp the weaker Merowinger.
When they eventually did anyway they did it with the backing of the pope and hence were forced to put the foundation of their kingship on the new religion of Christianity (king by God's grace) and actively fight the old pagan one that was at the time still dominant amongst the normal folk as it directly challenged and deligitimized their rule - hence remaining pagan suddenly turned from a personal decision to a political one for the free men amongst the Franks and the tribes living under their rule

From what I’m gathering is that the pagan Gods (even the Christian line up) came from the original Indo-European Gods and through thousands of years and migration, became all of the different variations. I find Norse Mythology the most fascinating being of Scandinavian and Celtic origin. I don’t believe in the Christian God, Thor, Zeus etc. as being actual Gods however I do believe in the spiritual realm. Side note: There was a native American author, speaker, & political leader here named John Trudell, who wrote a book called Stickman. He was also once a leader of AIM (the American indian movement). And in talks he often gave, he often compared tribal peoples experiences globally as the real people vs the all consuming machine, the taker of life & culture. He even explained how the so called white folk in America & Europe destroying tribal peoples globally also all came from great tribal peoples that were decimated by christianity & the sick machine often referred to as “civilization or civilized society”, and that they often forget who they originally were and do not see the comparisons of what was done to them, & then done to us, and still being done to us in the Americas. Sorry for my long rants. Just great to see quality video. Long Live The Tribes brother ✊👊
Absolutely. The Europeans did some horrible things to tribal peoples around the world. But people forget the exact same thing was done to europeans just a few hundred years before. @@norsemagicandbeliefs8134 yes, powerful fact brother. This understanding or realization will continue to spread as larger numbers of humanity continue to think out the box and rediscover our tribal past. Also all people throughout history of different colors and creeds have oppressed one another. At one time it was dark skinned people oppressing & enslaving. People have the right to their opinions but not to their own facts. The fact is our tribal ancestors were far more aware of natural rights and wisdom beyond just this physical realm. They were truly in tune with the many levels of spiritual consciousness, other realms, & overall existence here on mother earth. They walked in a different & much larger world view. Life is cyclical. You see the people slowly going back to this ancient understanding of sacredness. People are hungry for their tribal knowledge. Old systems of authority, control & destruction are losing, hence the violence & chaos now occurring in societies globally. The presenter appears to have ignored the changes to old German as spoken in Saxony, Jutland and Angeln upon its adoption into use in Britain. This is not evidence of a takeover as has been claimed, but rather of contact over an extended period. It should be pointed out that Christian missionaries had been active in Britain from the third century CE, before this exchange began.

Visigoths, Ostrogoths, Thracians, Dacians, Lombards, Etruscans, etc. These are all names of peoples from ancient times or before, who have disappeared. There are dozens of fictional peoples with the aim of hiding the origins of the natives of Europe. They are half-brothers, Germans, Spaniards, Italians, French, Scandinavians and others. Many modern states did not even exist until the 18th or 19th century, and the Italian language was made official in 1989, in the Italian parliament, although there are parts of Italy where people do not understand each other linguistically. There is a claim that in modern European languages originated administratively in the last few centuries.
Yes, and I've found that church accounts like the writings of Martin of Braga are very useful in showing just how long our traditions survived (and how much it was a headache for the Church and State). My father was originally from Southwest Germany (Swabia), but through one set of my great-grandparents I also have Iberian roots (Gallego and Castilla y Leon)! So that same mix of Suebi and Celt as occurred in Swabia. Asturias, Galicia and Cantabria - the most Celtic regions - preserved traditions far longer and still so many folk traditions clearly pre-Christian even if outwardly "folk Catholic".
Would like to know your opinions and thoughts on the Ore Linda book. Interesting read to say the least.
Awesome video. Thank you pretty happy with my blood from saxony Bavaria Germany Scotland and Ireland
Another great video, I have always been interested in migration and a relatively new book I am reading might be of interest to you. It is titled Who we are and how got here by David Reich. It uses genetic science to shed new light on our origins and how we migrated. The best book I have read regarding our migration. Thanks again for the video.
the last pagan holdouts were the balts
Crazy to think Christianity wiped out the Germanic pagans, Slavic pagans, Baltic pagans and the Celtic pagans. Even though I know that in some Slavic countries they still practice paganism and celebrate the holidays. I think Lithuania might be one.
@@Chevymonster203 I think The Romans did most of the Celtic Cleansing of Paganism...I could be wrong though.
@@johnbland1585 The Roman Empire was already split and in decline and did no longer have the necessary influence in Europe when Christianity was established as its major religion. The aggressive and intolerant expansion of that Mediterranean cult into Europe really got started in the early Middle Ages, when the Western Roman Empire had ceased to be a major player. The Christian Eastern Roman Empire held out longer, but their influence in Western Europe was limited.
@@Chevymonster203 Yes, sir. We are celebrating. Greetings from Lithuania
Where did you get the maps of genetic ancestry of the British isles?
I was just thinking today that where did Vikings "come from"? So thank you for answering! Im also proud how long our own nature based gods and beliefs survived here in Finland! 🇫🇮
Love this channel 👍
I find this so interesting, being raised as a Lutheran in Australia. My last name is Germanic origins. Meaning springtime. Northern Germans. Then I’ve just found out my Nan was originally Norwegian , that I tort was she was British but no not at all . And my grandfather on my mother’s side has strong wends / sorb origins . But my mother’s mother is German as well. Good to know. No wonder I’m tall built strong with blonde blue eyes , Ive also found out that some my family brother did DNA 🧬 test and yes it’s true . My daughter had hers done to and I always called her my little Viking and yes I got with a Scandinavian! 😂 so yes I have two girls ones a lady now with pretty blue eyes lovely blonde straight hair and my little one has long blonde darker blonde with waves like mine. She has green eyes. Love listening to your history. Gesundheit. cheers 🍻
Could you do a video on the old Norse language and difference between Dains, sweeds, Icelandic.. was there a common language? Thanks 👍
10:50 just a personal note for the future needs
Love this channel
My parents visit Sweden in the 1980's & my mother claimed that the back door of my grandmother's home church had a dragon on it; apparently recycled from older times.
i tracked my ancestors back to saxony, and its tough finding info on the pagan traditions of them, but in the end honoring and remembering my Sax ancestry makes me very proud.
Great stuff thank you!
Awesome and very informative video. Really, liked how you explained it with maps and good academic history.
One question. I have read that when the Goths, Lombards, and other Germanic tribes adopted Christianity they initially adopted Arian Christianity which is non-Trinitarian and non-Nicene creed Christianity. Any thoughts on this? Some say that Clovis of the Franks was the first Germanic King to accept Nicene Christianity which gave Rome it's first ally. Thoughts? Also read somewhere that one of the Cathedrals in Milan was originally a Arian Cathedral built by the Lombards? Have you ever heard of this before? Be interested on your opinion. You are right also that conversion wasn't just a black and white process.
Hei, takk for en flott video
Excellent videos
4:15 actualy the Buri, one of the tribes that came with the suebians to the iberian península were still pagans and there are still traces of their worship places in Terras de Bouro, the place where they settled.
Fascinating. Thank you.
thanks for the knowledge
These history lessons are always interesting. My ancestors can be traced back to the Germanic side of things
Another interesting video!
St Nikolaas ( St Nick ) The most well known Dutch celebration, derived from our pagan god; Wodan
And so do many of our words, epressions, the days of the week and so on.
It never really died.
It just evaded the Christian sword ;)
It’s so sad to think about all the knowledge, culture and history that has been lost forever. In germany there was a very harsh christianization so 99% of all germanic places of worship have been destroyed and replaced by chapels, crosses and churches
See my other comment on this video.
I feel empty. I know nothing about (relatively) my ancestors or the gods of my land.
Yes, and the sad part is that our people and culture were mass destroyed. And yet 99,9% of all people do not know this. The celts were mass genocided by the Romans and more. Europeans were killed off long before native American was. But no one talks about it, we germanic people are still seen as the oppressors
Hope you guys can also make a documentary about the Batavi and the Batavian Revolt against the Romans wich was directly caused by the Year of the Four Emperors.
I’m curious do any non-Scandinavians watch this channel?
I’m mostly Danish with a little bit of Sweden and Mexican/German mixed in after my family being the states for a couple generations. Love the channel btw
German here living at the border to czech republic. A germano-slav or a slavo-german in the gen-pool but in culture german for 300 years. I may have paternal origins in the baltic coast. I only can say my family is at the cultural borders for hundreds of years.
@@saxogrammatikus4195 I'm half Norwegian half southern italian so I guess i don't really count towards your question
My dad is frisian and he scores at k15 gedmatch is norwegian. So very scandinavian dna. But normal for frisian many have similar dna as norwegians at gedmatch.
If you can, can you go over the differences between Norse paganism and Baltic paganism.
So cool love the geography/history of it! From the research I have done on my ancestors, I am a descendant of the "Saxons" and I'm the only one in my family that got all the good Dane genes. Except that I'm not tall. Barely over 5 feet. The rest of the fam looks German.
Charlene: Carl, the great was the king of the western franks… He spoke Frankish Germanic dialect, and he was “ Germanic” not Roman. He was the “holy Roman emperor of the German nation… This was what was referred to as the second Reich .
learned some new things again:D
i,m wondering why i have such feeling to fight untill i die, even in this times .
and when i search out my history i makes more sense and sense.
cant save the Nehterlands on my own:( but people keep sleeping when they are awake:(
I'm a Norse pagan and my father came to America from Scandinavia this was very interesting to learn
Really interesting. I was born in Bavaria Germany( American parents, father was Army).
I was always curious about my true background so I did a DNA test. Don't know how accurate it is, but it said
35% Irish
25% German
15% Swedeish
10% Welsh
5% Scottish
5% Russian
Who knew. My Mom's 1 set of Grandparents were from Germany. Another Set Ireland. Same on Dad's side. This DNA is quite a mixed bag.
The piece about Northern Italy was interesting, explains why they have blonde hair and blew eyes.
I have Green Eyes, my sister had piercing blue eyes, we both had dirty blonde hair when we were young. It got blonder in the summer sun. My brothers,,, I think they were the milk man's kids. Oh, me and my sister were on the taller side, in 6'2" 270 pounds( no, I'm not a fatty) she was 5'10", about 135, 140 pounds.
Really enjoyed your segment. Very interesting
Are you implying your mom is a harlot?
I'm from england and I am mixed with anglo saxon germanic english Scottish ancestry and I'm learning about paganism from my ancestors roots and culture now in 2022
