    I think personally the biggest reference to Dark Souls on HK would just be the way the story is explained. It's not really a reference, it's more inspired by it. The lore is explained in scraps and dialogue, most of which you have to put together yourself. It's imo one of the best ways of telling a story in videogames, and even if it isn't a reference or inspiration, it's still really cool.

    • @hb-robo
      @hb-robo Год назад +1

      In fairness that is how all games used to be presented, but usually they were accompanied by a manual that held a shitton of lore and mechanic explanations. The more modern idea that DS and HK use seems to be more like Miyazaki’s famous story of reading western mythology in a language he didn’t understand, giving him a feeling of mystery in its incompleteness. Or for the players, picking up the game secondhand without the manual.

      According to all known laws of aviation, there is no way a bee should be able to fly. Its wings are too small to get its fat little body off the ground. The bee, of course, flies anyway because bees don't care what humans think is impossible. Yellow, black. Yellow, black. Yellow, black. Yellow, black. Ooh, black and yellow! Let's shake it up a little. Barry! Breakfast is ready! Ooming! Hang on a second. Hello? - Barry? - Adam? - Oan you believe this is happening? - I can't. I'll pick you up. Looking sharp. Use the stairs. Your father paid good money for those. Sorry. I'm excited. Here's the graduate. We're very proud of you, son. A perfect report card, all B's. Very proud. Ma! I got a thing going here. - You got lint on your fuzz. - Ow! That's me! - Wave to us! We'll be in row 118,000. - Bye! Barry, I told you, stop flying in the house! - Hey, Adam. - Hey, Barry. - Is that fuzz gel? - A little. Special day, graduation. Never thought I'd make it. Three days grade school, three days high school. Those were awkward. Three days college. I'm glad I took a day and hitchhiked around the hive. You did come back different. - Hi, Barry. - Artie, growing a mustache? Looks good. - Hear about Frankie? - Yeah. - You going to the funeral? - No, I'm not going. Everybody knows, sting someone, you die. Don't waste it on a squirrel. Such a hothead. I guess he could have just gotten out of the way. I love this incorporating an amusement park into our day. That's why we don't need vacations. Boy, quite a bit of pomp... under the circumstances. - Well, Adam, today we are men. - We are! - Bee-men. - Amen! Hallelujah! Students, faculty, distinguished bees, please welcome Dean Buzzwell. Welcome, New Hive Oity graduating class of... ...9:15. That concludes our ceremonies. And begins your career at Honex Industries! Will we pick ourjob today? I heard it's just orientation. Heads up! Here we go. Keep your hands and antennas inside the tram at all times. - Wonder what it'll be like? - A little scary. Welcome to Honex, a division of Honesco and a part of the Hexagon Group. This is it! Wow. Wow. We know that you, as a bee, have worked your whole life to get to the point where you can work for your whole life. Honey begins when our valiant Pollen Jocks bring the nectar to the hive. Our top-secret formula is automatically color-corrected, scent-adjusted and bubble-contoured into this soothing sweet syrup with its distinctive golden glow you know as... Honey! - That girl was hot. - She's my cousin! - She is? - Yes, we're all cousins. - Right. You're right. - At Honex, we constantly strive to improve every aspect of bee existence. These bees are stress-testing a new helmet technology. - What do you think he makes? - Not enough. Here we have our latest advancement, the Krelman. - What does that do? - Oatches that little strand of honey that hangs after you pour it. Saves us millions. Oan anyone work on the Krelman? Of course. Most bee jobs are small ones. But bees know that every small job, if it's done well, means a lot. But choose carefully because you'll stay in the job you pick for the rest of your life. The same job the rest of your life? I didn't know that. What's the difference? You'll be happy to know that bees, as a species, haven't had one day off in 27 million years. So you'll just work us to death? We'll sure try. Wow! That blew my mind! "What's the difference?" How can you say that? One job forever? That's an insane choice to have to make. I'm relieved. Now we only have to make one decision in life. But, Adam, how could they never have told us that? Why would you question anything? We're bees. We're the most perfectly functioning society on Earth. @Minh Nguyễn that’s kinda strange… I could’ve swore that their interests in Metroid games were quite evident in their interviews. Sure they talked about Zelda games when asked, but the “sparingly” mentioned Metroid has to do with the fact that one series is more popular than the other. They clearly mentioned the parallel between Samus being a familiar character in a new setting in every game and how Hornet being a powerful female character that is going to progress in a new world. Something that hasn’t been done in ANY Zelda game where the princess is the main character. But I guess that was some of the more recent interviews for the Silksong game so I don’t know which ones you’ve read/watched, but they never once said that they loved Zelda more than Metroid. They dislike certain aspects from both games sure, but that doesn’t mean one is preferred over the other…

    I think the main reason everyone compares Hollow Knight to Dark souls isn't even all the design similarities but especially the entire mood, aesthetic, and design style. Just the FEELING of it. Dark Souls was also inspired by Berserk, Angel's Egg, and is basically just a 3D metroidvania and shares tons of design philosophy with them in a new genre, so even though they apparently hadn't based the game off Dark Souls at all it probably just ended up feeling so connected because both of them are based off the same sets of other things.

      There's also the overall structure of the game tbh. Dark souls and then hollow knight too, there's just a few survivors hidden around this empty fallen ruined kingdom where you randomly stumble across them on your journey for brief nice moments in an otherwise empty world of only enemies, you share some little moment together and then you continue their questline if you manage to find them in another harder location later, repeat until they either realize something about themselves and find purpose or in many cases die

    I feel like Tunic has some parallels with Hollow Knight. Both are about little cute characters that go on an adventure to seek the deeper truths and secrets of an ancient kingdom/civilization. And both games have endings where you "take the final boss's place" and endings where you "break the cycle". Both characters get sealed in an object: The Knight gets sealed in the Black Egg. For the Ruin Seeker, the Shadow Oubliette. To break seals in both games, you have to collect 3 things. 3 broken seals in Hollow Knight, 3 keys in Tunic. Both games also have a world that "falls to ruin". The final bosses in both games also look older/similar to your own character. Both characters are also not the first/only of their kind. The Knight has fellow Siblings/Vessels in the Abyss while The Ruin Seeker has clones/worshippers/echoes of himself in the Cathedral. Both final bosses get infected/possessed during their battles. Both games have hidden passages. Both games have sections in their worlds that are gardens, graveyards, mines, etc. Both main characters can use Magic. Both main characters can dash quickly over gaps. Both games have areas where lots of information is kept. Hollow Knight has the Teacher's Archives while Tunic has The Library. Both the Teacher from Hollow Knight and the Librarian from Tunic use their vast knowledge to create things. Both The Knight and The Ruin Seeker have the option to kill the final boss. Both games have a mechanic to equip things that give extra effects/buffs. Both final bosses have a big sword while the main characters have small/average sized swords. And the list goes on and on and on

Aside from the shade, there's nothing too explicit, but so much of the themes, level design, atmosphere, storytelling, and lore unfolding seems to be at least distantly influenced by DS1. Yes, I know, Dark Souls is not the only game to do those things. But it was very very influential, and even if HK isn't directly influenced, it's definitely possible the industry was so influenced that it got to HK indirectly.

  • @TheLegless101
    @TheLegless101 3 года назад +7

    The midwife is also similar to no-face in that it seems friendly at first but then tries to eat the Knight. Also, some of midwife's dialogue alludes to her having an unending appetite, which no-face also has in the movie, consuming everything around it. I wouldn't exactly call midwife a reference either, but it is definitely inspired by no-face. There are also quite a few direct inspirations according to the Wiki Fandom, like how the charms are inspired from Paper Mario's badges, I'm not sure how many of these are true though.

    5:15, I still think it was intentional, not only because of the colors and etc, but because of the ability it gives to you.
    In undertale while you are fighting sans, he will dodge any attack that will income from you, he is the only character in the undertale who can do that. Dash in HK (and in almost any other game) is the ability to quickly dodge something, and the title of a "master" represents that someone have gained enough experience to become superior in that knowledge or a skill.
    And since sans is the only one who can dodge he is superior
    Well, this theory is stupid, but it doesnt really seem like a coincidence either

      @@charlieburnham39 denying obvious influences as the developer has many positives and it happens all the time in different medias (e.g. a lot of battle royales that were released back in dayZ popularity days denied being inspired by it)
      two biggest reasons why developers deny being influenced:
      1. they start being compared to that game all the time, it stops being looked at like a coherent new experience, but "like OG game with gimmicks"
      2. most people dont understand how creative process works and that everything is made from influences, thats why fpses were called doom clones. Putting attention to the fact they were influenced heavily by dark souls will give people "ammunition" to call it unoriginal or even ripoff, lessening public's opinion about it
      chances that they coincidentally ended up with dark souls' unique direction is practically 0
      chances that they lied, considering how common and benefitial it is, is very high
