The first time met Royce was at a dual between IOWA and OKLA ST in Stillwater. He was coaching at this piont in his career. Within a few minutes he was treating me like an old friend. Good dude.
I grew up poor, wrestled. I was not that great. My brothers wrestled too. They were much better. Dad was a former Marine, Mom was quiet. But there was a trust and intensity and hard work ethic that this video captures perfectly. Wanting and need opportunity, taking a chance, wanting to grab the brass ring. Thanks for posting this vid.
God bless your Mom Royce, I probably enjoyed the way you wrestled. You would always get your opponents pissed-off and then you would dominate them! Truly a Dan Gable wrestler!
Still love the Lisbon Lions, and I'm a CR Wash boy, just wish the Sutliffe bridge was still around. I still watch "The Final Season", see the bridge, what a tragedy. Go to the corner store across from the fire dept. and get some catfish bites and a beer from the cooler...take 'em out on the bridge. I know that I'm in a better place, but home is where the heart is....
I grew up in Iowa and now live in Indiana and I tell the wrestlers at the big schools in the suburban Indianapolis area, they should try and take on a couple of tiny schools in Iowa (Lisbon and Osage) and see what happens. I tell them they would be in for a horrifying surprise. They believe me.
Royce if you're reading this: I went to school with your cousins, David and Dean and was good friends with Rad (Bulichek's) bouncing. Yes I know Big Jim...I was Gary Mccall's wrestling partner in the room at Wash... I still remember the time we went to Mayflower and you took Ed Horton through the wall ( you said a word you should NOT have said) And Brad Penrith came across the couch and clocked Roy Marble, giving him that big black eye...tell me I'm wrong...
Back in the 80's Royce kicked the shit out of my college roommate. Damaged his eye permanently. I can remember Dan Gable calling the apartment hourly asking him if he was going to press charges.
Hilarious story...! Love hearing other people's stories about how old school stuff was... In today's world Faye woulda long divorced his Dad for "disrespecting" her....
UNI was offering full ride, and his dad was telling him to take the full ride offer. As Royce described it, his mom, who never "bucked" his dad, overruled his dad and told Royce to take the 35-40% plus books scholarship offer Iowa was giving, because "Dan Gable is upstairs in your bedroom. Take the brass ring".
@@ryanhuisman5381 That makes it clearer. Thanks. Royce was a Nat Junior Champ. That’s elite company right there. One wonders what else you need to do to get a “higher” ranking with anyone?
Gable knew no one was going to say no to him when he’s literally waiting in your room.

Glad you took the brass ring.

So was it UNI that lowballed you on scholarship? Confusing.
