Simple answer: This is the first time menswear is presented in this way. Complicated answer: When you think the market that Raf is presenting to in this current era of time menswear is made up formal suiting and technical historical tailoring you never really had hoodies in the mix. This collection in retrospect essentially shaped the viability of a menswear’s market outside of traditional well made suits button downs etc. Aside from that it presents ideas of youth and rebellion with an industrial execution. The layering, the large boding huge baggy shapes mixed with the heavy weight of the accessories give this feeling of movement and flow within restriction. Also in all honesty the video does add a lot to the ideas but when each piece is examined closer you see more references to rebellion, angst, statements of DIY like the infamous bomber from this show that has patches of a missing ricky edwards and bauhaus posters. The scarves and almost balaclavas Raf was designing for the youth in a time when that was unheard of the luxury market was in the midst of the big name supermodels and tho fringes like grunge existed they were not represented by the large house brands. This show is a statement against he heroine chic of the late 90s in every way from the scarves obscuring model’s faces to the references to youth in revolt to an image of a customer not manicured and primed like all other brands at the time a statement of an otherness that was not represented until Raf. Looking back from today it’s easy to overlook the impact and influence because we are spoiled in this much different landscape but that landscape simply would not exist without Raf. This show is also the pivot to everything else that would later come from Raf, after Summa cum Laude and Confusion Raf took a break and came back with Riot Riot Riot and took this shift to this lens of the rebellion and youth of trance raving european youth and from here has gone to create all other of his renowned work.
