Brilliant. We always shop local and when we were in the islands this is one of the shops we used. It was better stocked than our local Co-op. They were very helpful as well. Our view is if we do not buy local those facilities will not be there when we need them.
Amazingly important message, I could not agree more. LOCAL everything, is the answer. I will restrain from standing on my soapbox and expressing my feelings on globalism....but yes, absolutely. Always support the local economy in every way you can. Thanks for putting this out! 🙏😊👍
I love An Clachan and shop there every time I am on the island. I've seen how the shop has improved over the last decade and agree you can buy all your food there now. Will be there in June again and can't wait.
Wow! How wonderful to see such a huge and well stocked shop on Harris. I can't think of a thing that I'd need that I couldn't buy there. I'll definitely go with empty cupboards and fridge when I visit!
That looked windy and rough! LOL! Oh poor Dougal. Nice Vlog Andrew and great to promote the local stores and the value visitors can add to the local economy. Even if people do opt to to stock up in advance it's great to see you recommending that people consider buying some of the local arts and crafts. Always leave a little for the local community, it all adds up!
The ferry crossing looked exciting Andrew, but I did feel for poor Dougal. Kenny seemed like a top bloke and the shop looked so clean and well stocked. We love buying local produce when we're up north. You are so spot on with these videos and the messages you're relaying out to everyone. If we all just act responsibly with regards to our vehicles like, where we park them, how we drive them etc. and put money back into the local community, then it's a win win for everyone. Here they come....👍👍👍 Take care......Andy.
I whole heartedly agree with Andrew! We traveled though th Outer Hebrides last years for a couple of weeks: I have a severe form of Celiac disease but I had no trouble buying (high quality) groceries, get excellent help and dining out and having teas was just a feast. Best cakes, dinners and lovely service everywhere on the islands. I never felt better and wish I could move there.
I remember one year we were on the mv clansman sailing from oban to lochboisdale via barra and the waves were coming over the bow as well. It was rather scary and i couldn't wait to get off. I can tell you the sea swell was huge even though the storm had passed.
Hi Andrew, These food vlogs are fabulous, either food preparation or in this one sourcing locally very interesting & entertaining. WOW that crossing was scary, salty spray coming all over everything, & poor Dougal! This camping van seams to be getting it done, perfect for thoes tiny cute roads! Once again so enjoyable to view your traveling life with Dougal, I look forward to watching,😍👬😘!
that is what i loved about the shop on the Isle of Luing. they sold local produce, including cakes and bread, made by locals. you do not get that here in a city. i miss that. it tasted so much better.
I intend to take very basic provisions (like emergency baked beans!) but will support the local community and buy everything else locally. A practice we usually follow during our travels. Thanks, Andrew.
What a well-stocked store. Love all the fresh produce. And the nice usefull, locally made things to buy as souveniers. That ferry crossing looked brutal. I don't know of I would have chanced it. You're a braver soul than me. Thanks for this and filling use in on the food situation. Cheers.
Agree with you there that it is important to support the country store. costs a little more but it would be worth it. Then you can get local products that they do not have in big supermarkets that are so much better.
We were there in 2016, great shop. We purposely didn't take anything with us on our trip, we like to support local communities whenever possible. He's got a great selection of beers and wines too..
Great vid and so interesting to see the range and qualty on offer. And it shows how nice the people up there are ( " and theres something special contact us and well try and get it for you") now thats service for you
Dougal looks so happy travelling on the passenger seat where he can take in the view ;-} But bless him he looked the same way I would have felt on that ferry! The shop had an amazing choice and yes it might cost slightly more but when on holiday we always support the local shops. We stay in self catering cottages we don't have a van ;-{
‘A public service announcement from Sun Living- Dougal, please do not be sick in the loaner van. Thank you.” Poor Puppy. Fun tour of the shop. I would have spent my food budget on a cute tweed pillow. Best I stay home.
really good point and important to point out if you do take everything with you its going to cost you twice as much to lug it up there in the first place!just another top tip to get out there and meet new people.....touring, very very well done!
Oh I would happily shop there weekly. Great range of goods as well as locally made. Those are the things I look for just to try something new. Tourists shouldn’t be too surprised, after all, the local year-round residents have to shop for groceries. Right?
Amazing travels and your videos are truly supporting these good souls. Ace stuff you 😊 and you're beautiful one 🐕 Are doing. Cheers. 🍷🚐👍🐕🌍 Safe forever travels too 😊🙏🌍👍🚐🐕🌟
Very useful vlog, thanks. Visiting the Outer Hebrides for the first time this summer and we’re really looking forward to sampling local food. After visiting Arran several times we’re a bit obsessed with the cheese and have to restrain ourselves from taking too much home!
Andrew that shop is totally amazing, I want to move in,never seen such an array of food and treats, the vegetables were soooofresh, maybe instead of saving for that Airstream Bambi I should just relocate to Harris instead.
Poor little Dougal. I'd probably feel the same. Nothing better than fresh produce! ☺ Harris/Lewis eh? MacLeod territory. Have you ever seen Dunvegan Castle? I'll have to shop there when I visit. Thanks Andrew for another great adventure with you and Dougal.
Sadly I have never made it to Dunvegan castle - YET! Maybe this year... I always laugh when I think of the urban myth of the airport gate of the flight from Glasgow to Stornoway and the agent makes an announcement 'Would passenger MacLeod please come to the desk?' as 50 people stand up... ;@)
Hi Andrew. Having spent some time in the island I must agree how good the local produce is. You don't get fresher fish or langustine anywhere in the world and the Harris Gin is nectar from the gods, especially blessed by Cailleach na Mointeac, the old lady of the moor. By the way I pick up my van next Thursdar 😀
Andrew Ditton Hi Andrew. I have purchased a Vantage Sol. Staying near Leeds on Thursday night. Looking for somewhere spectacular near a pub in the borders for Friday. Any recommendations ? When are you back up north. I will be delighted to give you a tour. ;) Caroline will make you a special cake also. Cheers Willie
Congratulations! Afraid the only site I know in the borders is Hoddom Castle in Ecclefechan but it's not open in the winter. Will give you a shout when I'm next up, cheers!
I loved the video! thanks! I'm watching some of yours since yeasterday. I'm from Brazil and going to roadtrip Scotland in April, and since pounds are 4,5x times our currency, we are in a low budget and thinking about buying our food on local markets and cooking and stuff, and it was very helpful not only to see the average prices of some stuff, but also to see so many vegetarian options, since I am veg. and was a bit worry about it! We will definetly look for local markets in our trip! thanks for posting

Another really useful video, thanks for that. Can I also add ( at the risk of sounding like a stalker) I'm liking your waterproof coat you had on there. What make is it?
Cheers! I got it years ago from Decathlon for about £25. Sadly the zip has now bust after about 10 years and it looks like it can't be fixed, so it's done well considering.
Loving this video - support local is so important! Kenny and An Clachan are very supportive of local businesses and it's such a lovely shop. Don't forget to take some candles with you as a reminder of your visit - www.sandwickbaycandles.com

Then these shops die. Kenny made the poi t that the summer subsidises the winter, it is vital to support existing services or they disappear. 20% more on your weekly shop is what...£10/£20? Not much on the cost of a holiday, and remember, the views are free and the lovely locals are friendly.

Amazingly important message, I could not agree more. LOCAL everything, is the answer. I will restrain from standing on my soapbox and expressing my feelings on globalism....but yes, absolutely. Always support the local economy in every way you can. Thanks for putting this out! 🙏😊👍
I would never expect to see such a well stocked shop in such a fairly remote spot, Kenny's doing a great job.
I love An Clachan and shop there every time I am on the island. I've seen how the shop has improved over the last decade and agree you can buy all your food there now. Will be there in June again and can't wait.
I’ll see you there in June, hopefully!
That is one well stocked shop . Especially for this time of year . There is more fresh produce there than in my local co-op .
The same applies to Shetland. Excellent stores full of good stuff and prices.

Okay seriously, my own grocery doesn’t even have that kind of variety! Would love to have a local store with such great local suppliers!
Wow, I'm not sure my supermarket at home is that well stocked! Way to go Kenny 👍 Wouldn't mind some of that fudge....

I actually hope you will: cannot promote the Outer Hebrides enough!
So agree with local sourcing when possible! Good for everyone as well as the environment!
Another great vlog. I fancy a trip there now. Also great reminder to support local businesses ☺

Yes, sometimes the swell is worse the day after. That is a long crossing to be on in rough weather!

Very impressed with the shop we agree supporting local is very important. We hope Dougal recovered quite quick from his ferry journey.
when I travel I always support local traders and its very important to support the local pub , and its a great excuse to indulge

Nicely done, twin (as usual)! Food vlogs? Okay--more, please!
On a recent weeks holiday to the Isle can Happily say we spent money in the featured shop was very impressed with the range on offer.
That ferry looks like one that went from Lymington to Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight many years ago!
Wow,seems like you've been in the outer hebradies for ever but really enjoying the journey,
We'll definitely be stocking up there when we are in Harris. Simply amazing range of produce.

Nice one Andrew! Love that shop! It has everything you could ever need on Harris! Love all the local produce!
I fully expected Dougal to say " left, you should of turned left human " ;-)
what a great place!!!! cheers
Wow, who knew! Great shop!
Now I could cope with THAT type of shopping!
always look to shop local! it looked better stocked than my local coop lol!! Good job!
A very impressive shop indeed, particularly impressed with the craft items. Has he thought of an online shop?
I spotted a sprite alpine as you got off the ferry! we had one as are last caravan called it betty.
what a great shop.
There are some great classic vans dotted around the Islands :)
We're looking to visit in the camper at some point and good to know there's a well stocked shop :) Been enjoying your videos :)
I just ate dinner, but I’m hungry again. 😁 I’m a ‘foodie,’ so I love to buy locally produced food. Everything looked delicious!😍
Fabulous, love a rough crossing.....and what a fantastic and diverse range of goods the community coop stocks...safe travels.👍🇮🇲❤️
Thanks Andy!

The craft items are upstairs so are out of temptation’s way :) So that’s no excuse to stay home :)

Splendid video, thanks from Germany. I really need to go as well. Awesome dog btw.
Thanks Jens!
Great video. Remote places like rhis should be able to charge lower VAT.
Maybe possible after Brexit but currently it would be against EU law!

Just a general question, but do vegetables grow in the highlands ? There never seems to be any pictures of growing crops or vegetable gardens in any videos I watch.
Yes, mainly in poly tunnels or walled gardens. You don’t see them generally as they are in sheltered spots!

Do you still have your caravan Andrew or full time camper van now
Still got the Airstream, this van was a 6 week loan.
Hi Andrew,
You and Dougal are moving on. Can I ask if you would recommend a particular route or sequence to visit the islands? Don
I’ll be writing a blog entry about this soon Don.
For people traveling in a small car without kitchen, can they find prepared/cooked food in the Co-Op? (In the US it's usually found in Deli section of the market) Or my only option is the restaurants? Thanks.
Yes, they have stuff like pre-made burgers, sandwiches, microwave meals etc.
Why do campervans get a bad press up there?
Sadly a minority who disrespect the environment ☹️
Did the dog throw up?
Bless him he didn't... and normally doesn't... but he desperately needed out of the van. Let's just leave it there ;@)
I'm certainly going to bring my own eggs though. I just bought 12 L/XL free range eggs for 2 pounds 40 pence. I see Kenny's eggs are 2 pounds for six.
The Co-Op Free Range eggs at An Clachan are much cheaper if price is your main motivation. The ones that are £2 for 6 are from Air An Lot on the Isle of Lewis.
