The sad reality of what’s taking place on Toronto’s streets

- In May of this year, recently retired Toronto resident Rick Craddock was an innocent victim of Toronto’s disturbing and increasing violence. He was nearly beaten to death in the park behind his condo. The assault landed the 66-year-old in hospital with a broken back, a brain bleed and a broken arm.
The perpetrator was known to police, he says, but he is unsure whether the man lived at the nearby Bond Hotel shelter on Dundas St. East, which is steps away from his condo building.
The city bought the hotel shelter - which opened during the pandemic and houses about 200 clients - in September to turn into 280 safe affordable homes.
Sue-Ann Levy reports.

So sorry to hear this man's experience... that's why I moved my wife and kids out of that hell hole!
My favorite part of Toronto is the highway out of the city. Thank goodness I don't live there
I’ve been in Toronto for 76 years and was always proud of it. Sanctuary city finished it off. I used to work downtown, it was so safe. The politicians should hang their heads in shame, what a useless, over-paid lot, poor Toronto.
not their head. their entire life
Thank you Sue-Ann, for bringing this matter to the residents of Toronto. 👍
Does Toronto have a Soft on Crime attitude?
Wow Ottawa has some trucks illegally parked for a few weeks and they send in the riot squad Toronto has that going on for years where are the police? Shameful. I was born in Flemingdon park and the crime got so bad in that area my family had to move to the country around 83 now they got crime in the "nice" area and not everyone can just move away.
We live in Sydney, Australia. We were in Canada in July.
Holy fckballs!! I was astounded by the homelessness and street people in the City. It was absolutely a war zone. Because my comparison is Australia.
We have a homeless problem in Australia, most countries do. But we’re obviously better at managing the problem and getting the people the support they need.
My 5 year old son who has never seen a homeless drug addicted person asked me.., daddy “why are there so many weird people?”
this is the type of world that left wing politicians are creating.
This seems like a common problem all over Canada I leave in a city where similar things happen
London Ontario as an example.
@@dawnelder9046 Death-a-Peg
Sault ste. Marie also!!!
It's great to see you back Sue-Ann! Thanks for this.
We had the same marxists city council in Vancouver but thankfully voted them out of town! I see Toronto wants more misery - that's on them.
My daughter lives in that building and was one of the ones that phone 911 this happens all the time this area has not been checked or cleared from some of these drug dealers druggies and like my daughter said you have to be very careful even going on your balcony yelling you could be shot there has been a number of cases in this area I really wish they would clean it up my daughter is disabled and has to live close to the hospital and she said you cannot go out in this area after 5:00 so sad John Tori will you not do something for the people in this area
But she voted for the same government....
Move to a smaller city
Where are the Men?
@@ronl1633 Again where are the Men, Clearly Ron L is not a Man.
Where the Men?
There used to be these people that kept young punks in check they were called Men.
The problem started with the closing of mental hospitals and continued with the easy access to drugs. Mentally ill people are drawn to downtown areas where they can panhandle and receive other support. There needs to be residential and secure accommodation for the mentally ill so that ordinary citizens going about their daily lives are not prone to violent attack. The public's right to safety means that something be done to quell the violence perpetrated on the innocent.
A good old fashioned curb stomp for some of these dudes would be a good start if Governments refuse to deal with this problem.
Toronto has been a dump for well over a decade now, the drugs, violence and ignorance are everywhere and I am so glad I left the city in 2004. If you look at the most wanted in Toronto and in Canada we all know the reasons for these escalations and its about time Canadians stopped being polite and damn well started being vocal about it.
This would have never happened if Faith Goldy was mayor
Met her once during her campaign. Yes , she would be way better than Tory. Sadly Tory just got his third term. Toronto is becoming a shithole city thanks to Trudeau and Tory!
Corruption so sorry for this man
Such a shame.
My sympathies to the person attack. That area has become such unsafe area a few years back. I use to work not that far from there and never liked there even in the day time. People shooting up all the time. Usual story, where the attackers are free and won't get charged. I use to get email reports of the happenings in the area and more and more were happening during regular day time working hours. I have not been downtown since I retired and have no plans to. These days, if you defend yourself, you get charged.
I went into a Scotiabank on the Queensway in Etobicoke, and the security guard, stationed at the door, LOCKED THE DOOR BETWEEN EACH PERSON GOING IN OR OUT. On a Monday mid-morning.
I echo another person’s comments.
If we can’t feel safe in our own cities anymore, we should be allowed to carry a gun. It’s inevitable. As our cities descend into chaos, self defense will be needed to survive . Vancouver is the same.
Trudeau is hell bent on disarming all law abiding Canadians while doing nothing to disarm the criminals.
@Jeff Spicolli Let’s just hope this spreading crime and lawlessness in our streets and on private properties declines massively so we can go back to feeling safe. Then no need for self defense weapons .
John Tory’s Toronto! You could have and should have had Faith Goldy! Elections/selections have consequences! How different things could have been if it weren’t for corruption!
Faith would have been a sensible mayor. I hope she runs again.
the old boys network, alive and well in Toronto nepotism, cronyism, and corruption
She was blackballed by media including the Sun or Bell Media all the same.
Dominion decides who wins ....not you!!!!!
I wonder if demographics have anything to do with it?
Yes and the closing down of ment institutions in the 80's, which I just learned was internationally driven world wide by entities with World Economic Forum.
I was just there this summer. I am furious at what my old city has turned into. My favorite bar Bier Markt was at half capacity because who wants to have a beer outside with a homeless guy yelling at imaginary people. I decided to also have a look at the once nice novotel. As soon as I walked past the kitchen, some fella had a lit tim horton's cup on fire while walking out of the kitchen. There was human feces on the streets at several locations around that block (even worse than the DTES in Vancouver). Due to the crap that happens there, I constantly see two police officers on foot patrol several times a day. After seeing Toronto and Vancouver turn into shitholes, I have decided to move to AB forever!
Welcome home buddy.
There is a big subway campaign here in Toronto urging folks to move to Alberta. As soon as my kids are out of school I'm gone.
Lesson learned. Don't talk to people unless they talk to you. Very unfortunate.
I would appreciate more local coverage from Toronto and stories that tell the downtrending progress of the city. Its often ignored
Didn't John Tory just get re-elected?
"If voting made a difference they wouldn't let us do it." Mark Twain.
Looks like Satan himself is running that city. He loves evil and not doing what's right and good but creates Kaos and his servants do the same.
Canada needs its own second amendment. The only thing that stops a criminal is a harsh deterrent and I honestly believe this will continue to happen so long as people are forcibly disarmed by their government. I fear for the women and elderly in my family. I wish I could protect them better. Sadly the only option now is to move to the states as Canada falls apart.
Brilliant. Take the guns from law abiding citizens so only the bad guys are armed. You idiots are unbelievably stupid.
I hear Detroit is a nice place to live or NYC.
@@darleneaitken1620 😂
this is Canada with a leader who publicly proclaimed to the Gov of Cali that he was proud of the fact that a homeowner in Canada who shoots/kills a burglar is charged with murder those were Justanaholes words to Gavin Newsom you have no right to defend yourself in this third world dictatorship this is no longer a civilized country
@@kirkyorg7654 Liberal logic is not "civilized".
Wow this is really sad. I haven't been in toronto for a few years walking around. We never had unsafe areas....sad that its going the way of other big cities. Knew this was a problem in the States but was proud it wasn't like that here. Guess i can't be proud anymore.
The good citizens of TO voted John Tory in again to continue his excellent work. Lol.
Well Toronto you just voted 4 more years of this and Vaughan Hamilton and Brampton your on your way to this same reality enjoy the rotten fruits of your choices.
Well, props to the people for calling 911. Many people wouldn't and would think someone else did. it's too bad so many did but better 30 calls then no calls.
The violence happening today is like living in a third world country.
“Canada is becoming a third world country “ I sad it back in ten years. BTW, I come from a third world country.
It makes me sick when John Tory says "WE need this" and "WE need that". Who is "WE"??? WE = condo builders, land developers, investors, speculators, and the hundreds of thousands of planned immigrants who will be arriving in Toronto in the next decade. "WE" does NOT INCLUDE the Canadian citizens who built this city and country with blood sweat and tears.
You get what you vote for.
I did deliveries at that hotel this summer and I can tell you it's a cesspool all right. I was excited to see a hotel address thinking it would be an easy delivery, imagine my surprise to find the entryway completely surrounded by people heckling, smoking weed and yelling, and having a buzz in system to get to the foyer. It's like the Good Shepherd now.
Opiod addiction is a real crisis. I know a few people who got hooked on that stuff just after one hit. The pandemic lockdowns destroyed a LOT of younger people due to mental health impacts from messing up their social lives.
Ya let's legalize it says Justin
The root cause is either drugs or mental illness...or both.
John Tory loves lockdowns.
@@elterrifico9522 LOL John certainly didn't love lockdowns. I have spoken with John regarding his anxiety of having to implement lockdowns during the pandemic. He recognized that he is a businessman and a lawyer...not a doctor. He followed the advise of medical experts, mainly Dr. Eileen De Villa, the Chief Medical Officer of Health for the City of Toronto.
@@chrisgraham2904 that's a pretty pathetic excuse for an elected official "sorry, I gave in to the hysteria and disinformation of unelected people"
Solutions ::
1) No dogs allowed .. .. in Toronto.
2) Put Junkies in cages.
Problems solved.
You are welcome.
In 1986 I visited Toronto (from Amsterdam) for the first time. In 2002 again, in 2005, 2006 and a few times afterwards again. Toronto was in my mind the cleanest, safest, best kept city I had ever seen. Now I would not even want to live there for free.
And they have done nothing and tory the freak is back in there I would sue him persoanaly he has a duty to keep it safe
I used to be very proud of Toronto, now I wouldn't live there if my house, taxes and everything else connected to living there were paid for me. Its just not the same as it was before, now its just congested and crime ridden
The best place in the world for no reason except for being Toronto.
@@mikez650 30 years ago maybe
Does anyone still consider Toronto a part of Canada?
Detroit can have it
Not if they vote liberal
Sadly, it perfectly symbolizes Canada. And wait until Trudeau is finished with it.
No
Toronto in the 70s was a great city. Now it is a sh*t hole. We all know what has changed.
I was born and raised in toronto. Grew up around ossington and bloor area, then moved out to st.claire and runnymede area, then I moved to etobicoke. The next place I move is going to be a few hours away from this shit hole city that once used to be great. It's turning into san francisco.
Toronto is not the place it used to be. I don't even like the city any more.
Who allowed Toronto to become a 3rd world refugee camp?
Liberals
Liberalism
I gotta get out of this city.
Sad to see what the Bond Place Hotel has become. I stayed at this hotel a few times since the 90's. The rooms are small, but the location is great. I sure am going to miss it.
I believe John Tory was just reelected.
wait how can the city spend money without showing the receipts? Those are tax dollars. YOUR MONEY!
This is messed up…Toronto is becoming more and more unsafe…
Was the offender charged???
He should be put away!!!!!
No one deserves to be assaulted. But this man should learn to mind his own business. Not everyone in this world is a good person and minding his own business instead of intersecting into other people's business would of avoided the event.
Unless intervening would save someone, it’s better to not confront people who could be on drugs, or on the edge and dangerous, if provoked. You should pick your battles carefully.
Love this lady reporter !
Sad, when our seniors can't afford to live anywhere but some apartment in the dump town Toronto and end up being helpless vs the low class trash Toronto has attracted.
They voted for it
@@vancouver4sure
Did they? I don't know that this person did.... the majority of Toronto voters are responsible for the degenerate hole it is to some extent, but there is still some sane minded people stuck there sadly. Someone who gets their story to True North, not necessarily the type to be glued to the CBC and promote left wing wacko councilors and the spineless Mayor, and not that they have much current options on politicians to change this sort of thing. I lived in the city at one time. I elected Rob Ford who was the first true break thru populist politician of these times... thousands of Torontonians like myself took him to a landslide win....yet it was no match for the establishment and the council to destroy him and the will of the electorate.
Legitimately, it's difficult to leave Toronto if you've been renting there for the last 20
+ years and, are living on a fixed budget/income, and can't afford to buy something outta the TO dump. I still find it sad even if you want to blame them
@Wise Acres don't give an f what you don't care about personally
And they want to make us all like that.
The really sad part is that the bad guy was probably released after they gave him breakfast.......catch and release!!!!
True north the real media
Keep up !telling the truth always 👍
We need more affordable houses outside the GTA.
We don’t need any more government subsidies!
Wow!!!
When you bring up the issue of increasing violence you always hear the same response....Well it's not as bad as the US cities or comparing to...
Toronto should have stayed an industrial area. Housing developments should have went north, east and west. Overpopulation leads to crime. This is all the fault of the government that doesn't understand basic city management
Well come on now. You guys voted for this mess. What's wrong with Justin Castro telling customs and boarder to do there jobs and stop Drugs guns are illegal immigrants. And no I have no problem with people coming to Canada to live and prosper and make a life for their children and family. That's just beautiful. But the way the Government is handling leaves everyone in the country at risk and there's no need. Watching from Ottawa
Welcome to the brave new world
Toronto has declined along with most of the rest of Canada.
Lecturing street people at night probably isn’t the wisest move, unless you’re Bruce Lee or Mohamed Ali. Get some street smarts man.
Good to know they do wellness tests!
1. Don't stick your nose where it doesn't belong.
2. You KNEW it wasn't a service dog?
3. Why are you holding the gate?
Moral of the story when you're bored of listening to your friend talk go home and read a book. Don't investigate the screams in downtown Toronto.
People were not meant to live in concrete towers like an insect colony.
A few calls (30) resulting in a busy signal on 911. Messed up.
Its not just Toronto . I live in little Chatham and its stoned out homeless on side walks sleeping needles in the parks pop tents feet hanging out nightly. Walk by some of them they are so stoned they melt down or show body parts in suggestion. Scream and threaten you. Kids are not safe no more walking home from schools or go to store for a popsicle. And housing the drug addition housing paying top dollar tax payers money in public houses not high rises which is all geared house income is for ODSP singles full of chemical and pot smell. But 2 3 4 bedroom house apartments allowed for drug addition housing for a 1 occupant who the one next door has tormented another neighbourhood with garbage and melt downs and destruction with her many many street drug tenant guest. Chatham has gotten bad but the drug addition housing has no right to destroy neighbourhoods of private owned property with 1 rental unit of a house split into 4 nore does the managers or the landlord tenant act. But they do. WHY? Easy answer landlords getting triple the rent and free home repair while citizens are put in danger and tolerating of bad behaviours that they are suppose to pay for with tax dollars and basically told to just suck it up. We need the old programs from the 80s. Double welfare dont work dont educate send a worker once a week to see what else they want is not the way. We had 30 and 60day in drug addition hospital manditory then 3 to 6 months in work programs and education normally outside cities in camps or recovery homes . And a over 90% recovery is what we had .I had a police officer say its less then 1% recovery. If your going to fix a problem bring back the programs that fixed the mess not aid in the mess.Because it dont help these people who need help. And did not cost the tax payers billions of dollars year after year while they sit on their butt doing nothing . Bring back the 80s programs and really help. Not this oh poor baby will give you more and more freebies program that aint working. The only ones benefiting from these programs are the federal paid employees doing their 10 minute weekly visit and those who own and organize these drug addition mental health housing boards. Very Pathetic. Take the drug addicted away from the dealers and clean them up else were that worked in the past. And it can work now.
Moral of this story...Learn to mind your own damn business.
John Tory got in again. Dreadful
And Toronto voters put the same Mayor, John Tory, back in office again.
Deeply sorry to hear that this man suffered this terrible experience. Everyone should take a minute to reflect: What do you think happens when you allow your politicians to lock down entire economies for months and months on end? Did you consider that this would have devastating effects on the weakest and poorest? Did you think about the downstream implications in terms of crime etc? Now, you are all shocked by the increased homelessness? Really?
CANADA REALLY NEEDS GOD RIGHT NOW...
Lol come to Vancouver. We literally have entire part of downtown, 100s of buildings and shops surrounded by homeless and tents all over the streets, people selling drugs in front of cops, junkies injecting themselves on middle of the street and here we are complaining about one building with some junkies in front of it. Like I said, come to Vancouver, you can make a real story about it
Rumours are that they are sending homeless to from TO to Chatham on the train. Homeless are getting off the train and stating their ticket was paid for and there was supposed to be someone waiting that was going to help them.
Apparently the mayor of North Bay accepted bus loads of the homeless drug addicts from Toronto as well according to my sister who has since left North Bay. Businesses have closed and it’s been a scary place to live as well for some years. 😢 6 facilities for drug addiction but they’re all on the streets. Someone who had moved there from Toronto had expressed her shock at the number of them and felt proportionally that it was even worse than what she had moved away from 😢
Good citizens need to personally stand up to violence. And protect there fello Canadian when trouble comes to call.
I don't want to go near that Dump !
Toronto has become a toilet bowl😢
had you had a 38 you would have saved your self
saved himself from what? a life outside bars? old guy woulda been charged too if he even carried a knife
I wonder why people take drugs, any ideas?
because son, you can feel like heaven when youre high.
Glad he's recovering. This is happening all over north america. It happens almost every day in Vancouver. Politicians have failed and made it worse.
Billions of $ spent and its worse than ever. I say abandon support for crackheads and build more prisons. We may even have to have a 'district 9' scenario to put these twitchy criminals in , then forget about em. imo.
sad man
Bad mayor decisions ' we have to get these people out of the city !!
Too bad you didn’t have a permit to carry a firearm like they do in some states in the US because if you did you could have defended yourself…… unfortunately you’ll just be the “Victim”
Come visit Vancouver and take a leisurely stroll down Hastings with the family - experience the natural beauty of British Columbia's crumbling social experiment, it's shocking, it's disturbing...it's a lefties paradise!
Sorry, but did this city slicker get a head injury from that, disgusting, attack?
"...gotta be five foot high fence. How he got on top, I don't know."
Genuine question; do people in cities really think a 5 foot fence is not scalable?
Was he and his dog allowed in the playground, maybe not. Was he just hanging out keeping to himself? Was the dog shitting and pissing in the area? If so then he should of been called out for it.
If he was just minding his own business, everyone else should too. If people were shouting at him from the building and this older fella confronted him. Chances are the guy with the dog was becoming more frustrated.
People can't engage in civil conversation as a de-escalation tactic anymore.
There are people out there who will throw hands and if you're not expecting that when confronting someone, keep your mouth shut and move on.
Be careful Toronto or you will end up like Vancouver.
It's like that all across Canada. Way to many new people all at once
FRUMOSUL E DOAR UNA DIN DIMENSIUNILE VIETII.
Toronto becoming like vancouver just without the view ahaha
Yeah I used to live in that area . It was sketchy at times and a lot of addicts and mentally ill. Things will not change anytime soon under the current political climate.
I got stabbed in my throat with a broken beer bottle,at 2:00 AM around that area ,from the back of me !! (Didn,T even get the chance to defend my neck from the sneaky garbage.) Sad ,that he was ordered deported a couple times, and never was !!
Vancouver is no different except we just ditched kennedy stewart because he let the city go to shit.
And Toronto elected John Tory again?!?!?
Lets Start a Guardian Angel Chapter in Toronto
Hey buddy in this day and age u don't reprimand some a hole in the the intercity,
Just keep it down there. You can point fingers at Tory and Justin, but for me I really dont give a dam. The CBC just stated that Canada is 25% newcomers for the first time and this is great for the aging pop that will need health care. 1st, why is health care falling apart now, and 2nd, I dont want health care due to violent crime.
Hopefully the offenders are in jail now.
Lol
