The sad reality of what’s taking place on Toronto’s streets

  • In May of this year, recently retired Toronto resident Rick Craddock was an innocent victim of Toronto’s disturbing and increasing violence. He was nearly beaten to death in the park behind his condo. The assault landed the 66-year-old in hospital with a broken back, a brain bleed and a broken arm.
The perpetrator was known to police, he says, but he is unsure whether the man lived at the nearby Bond Hotel shelter on Dundas St. East, which is steps away from his condo building.
The city bought the hotel shelter - which opened during the pandemic and houses about 200 clients - in September to turn into 280 safe affordable homes.
    Sue-Ann Levy reports.

We live in Sydney, Australia. We were in Canada in July.
Holy fckballs!! I was astounded by the homelessness and street people in the City. It was absolutely a war zone. Because my comparison is Australia.
We have a homeless problem in Australia, most countries do. But we’re obviously better at managing the problem and getting the people the support they need.
My 5 year old son who has never seen a homeless drug addicted person asked me.., daddy “why are there so many weird people?”

The problem started with the closing of mental hospitals and continued with the easy access to drugs. Mentally ill people are drawn to downtown areas where they can panhandle and receive other support. There needs to be residential and secure accommodation for the mentally ill so that ordinary citizens going about their daily lives are not prone to violent attack. The public's right to safety means that something be done to quell the violence perpetrated on the innocent.

People shooting up all the time. Usual story, where the attackers are free and won't get charged. I use to get email reports of the happenings in the area and more and more were happening during regular day time working hours. I have not been downtown since I retired and have no plans to. I was just there this summer. I am furious at what my old city has turned into. My favorite bar Bier Markt was at half capacity because who wants to have a beer outside with a homeless guy yelling at imaginary people. I decided to also have a look at the once nice novotel. As soon as I walked past the kitchen, some fella had a lit tim horton's cup on fire while walking out of the kitchen. There was human feces on the streets at several locations around that block (even worse than the DTES in Vancouver). Due to the crap that happens there, I constantly see two police officers on foot patrol several times a day. After seeing Toronto and Vancouver turn into shitholes, I have decided to move to AB forever!

The only thing that stops a criminal is a harsh deterrent and I honestly believe this will continue to happen so long as people are forcibly disarmed by their government. Did they? I don't know that this person did.... the majority of Toronto voters are responsible for the degenerate hole it is to some extent, but there is still some sane minded people stuck there sadly. Someone who gets their story to True North, not necessarily the type to be glued to the CBC and promote left wing wacko councilors and the spineless Mayor, and not that they have much current options on politicians to change this sort of thing. I lived in the city at one time. I elected Rob Ford who was the first true break thru populist politician of these times... thousands of Torontonians like myself took him to a landslide win....yet it was no match for the establishment and the council to destroy him and the will of the electorate.

Its not just Toronto . I live in little Chatham and its stoned out homeless on side walks sleeping needles in the parks pop tents feet hanging out nightly. Walk by some of them they are so stoned they melt down or show body parts in suggestion. Scream and threaten you. Kids are not safe no more walking home from schools or go to store for a popsicle. And housing the drug addition housing paying top dollar tax payers money in public houses not high rises which is all geared house income is for ODSP singles full of chemical and pot smell. But 2 3 4 bedroom house apartments allowed for drug addition housing for a 1 occupant who the one next door has tormented another neighbourhood with garbage and melt downs and destruction with her many many street drug tenant guest. Chatham has gotten bad but the drug addition housing has no right to destroy neighbourhoods of private owned property with 1 rental unit of a house split into 4 nore does the managers or the landlord tenant act. But they do. WHY? Easy answer landlords getting triple the rent and free home repair while citizens are put in danger and tolerating of bad behaviours that they are suppose to pay for with tax dollars and basically told to just suck it up. We need the old programs from the 80s. Double welfare dont work dont educate send a worker once a week to see what else they want is not the way. We had 30 and 60day in drug addition hospital manditory then 3 to 6 months in work programs and education normally outside cities in camps or recovery homes . And a over 90% recovery is what we had .I had a police officer say its less then 1% recovery. If your going to fix a problem bring back the programs that fixed the mess not aid in the mess.Because it dont help these people who need help. And did not cost the tax payers billions of dollars year after year while they sit on their butt doing nothing . Bring back the 80s programs and really help. Not this oh poor baby will give you more and more freebies program that aint working. The only ones benefiting from these programs are the federal paid employees doing their 10 minute weekly visit and those who own and organize these drug addition mental health housing boards. Very Pathetic. Take the drug addicted away from the dealers and clean them up else were that worked in the past. And it can work now.

Deeply sorry to hear that this man suffered this terrible experience. Everyone should take a minute to reflect: What do you think happens when you allow your politicians to lock down entire economies for months and months on end? Did you consider that this would have devastating effects on the weakest and poorest? Did you think about the downstream implications in terms of crime etc? Now, you are all shocked by the increased homelessness? Really?

Lol come to Vancouver. We literally have entire part of downtown, 100s of buildings and shops surrounded by homeless and tents all over the streets, people selling drugs in front of cops, junkies injecting themselves on middle of the street and here we are complaining about one building with some junkies in front of it. Like I said, come to Vancouver, you can make a real story about it

Rumours are that they are sending homeless to from TO to Chatham on the train. Homeless are getting off the train and stating their ticket was paid for and there was supposed to be someone waiting that was going to help them.

Apparently the mayor of North Bay accepted bus loads of the homeless drug addicts from Toronto as well according to my sister who has since left North Bay. Businesses have closed and it’s been a scary place to live as well for some years. 😢 6 facilities for drug addiction but they’re all on the streets. Someone who had moved there from Toronto had expressed her shock at the number of them and felt proportionally that it was even worse than what she had moved away from 😢

Glad he's recovering. This is happening all over north america. It happens almost every day in Vancouver. Politicians have failed and made it worse.
Billions of $ spent and its worse than ever. I say abandon support for crackheads and build more prisons. We may even have to have a 'district 9' scenario to put these twitchy criminals in , then forget about em. imo.

"...gotta be five foot high fence. How he got on top, I don't know."
Genuine question; do people in cities really think a 5 foot fence is not scalable?

Was he and his dog allowed in the playground, maybe not. Was he just hanging out keeping to himself? Was the dog shitting and pissing in the area? If so then he should of been called out for it.
If he was just minding his own business, everyone else should too. If people were shouting at him from the building and this older fella confronted him. Chances are the guy with the dog was becoming more frustrated.
People can't engage in civil conversation as a de-escalation tactic anymore.
There are people out there who will throw hands and if you're not expecting that when confronting someone, keep your mouth shut and move on.

Just keep it down there. You can point fingers at Tory and Justin, but for me I really dont give a dam. The CBC just stated that Canada is 25% newcomers for the first time and this is great for the aging pop that will need health care. 1st, why is health care falling apart now, and 2nd, I dont want health care due to violent crime.
