For me actually Fortus is this guy. Don'y get me wrong, he's recognized, but after 20 years and many line-ups, he's still the rhytm guitar. Our infiltrated secret hero..
To me the best guitar line-up, of any band ever, was the 2002 line-up featuring; Robin Finck, Buckethead & Richard Fortus. 3 great guitar players in one band. Then you have Brian Mantya on Drums & Stinson on bass. That's beast. Too bad Axl ruined the old & new GnR. CD had so much potential.
Yeah I never had a problem with any guns line up they was all amazing in their own ways but axl wouldn’t have never had a bad line up people slag him off but his a performer and a pretty good one on some days I seen him 5 times now and I never had a bad show
Agreed. The lineup you speak of was the best lineup in my opinion. I love that era of the band, Axl never should've let Buckethead go, nor should've he hired Frank as Brain's replacement....Frank was supposed to be a temporary drummer filling in for a few weeks. Never understood the move behind that one either. Either way, Axl needs to get his ass in gear and release his "two finished albums," and also the "remix album." I would buy them the day of release, just as I did with CD.
I know Robin's style isn't to everyone's taste, but I bloody love it. All those atonal bends and choppy rhythm parts are there for a reason, and it works for me. I have nothing against Ashba, and he clearly knows how to work a crowd, but I prefer Robin's style.
Robin Finck is way more fluid...and smooth in his playing. One note slides effortlessly into the next. DJ Ashba's not a bad player......he looks good in a band. But as far as the technicality....when Finck plays the hours and hours of practice he's spent on the craft is obvious. Obvious to me.....anyway.
I don't think Ashba had ever tried to fully match the original solos. At least, based on his original guitar solos (Mi Amor, La Bella Vita and Ballad of Death) and his work on Sixx:A.M., he was like trying to respect the original work but adding his style on them. You can clearly hear similarities, but with (mainly) more slides and stuff like that.
Is it a good or a bad thing that even though I know sweet nothing about guitars, I recognise Robin's different guitars that he is playing in this video? I am biased. Robin all the way.
Fink is who gave Chinese Democracy album a sound thats remiscent to classic Guns. Very interesting to hear the comparisons, but Ashba is crazy good and you can tell this guy really was an avid fan of gnr, and his covers of the older stuff are a dead ringer. I dont know hats off to both these very wowing guitarists!
Finck sounds like finck, Ashba sounds like he’s trying to sound like Slash and to my mind that’s not the angle to take when playing anyones material….. make it your own or don’t bother at all
I'm Not Sure If Fink Made The Songs, But Ashba Did Not Make Anything For Guns, The Only Guitarists That Did Make Songs Are Slash, Buckethead, And Robin Fink.
Robin Finck is a good guitar player only when he plays the Chinese Democracy songs. On the older songs, he sucks at them. The only reason why DJ Ashba is a better guitar player than Robin is because when DJ plays the older GNR songs, he mostly plays the solos correctly, only because he's trying to be like Slash, which I think is okay. Robin just puts his own style into the older songs, which doesn't make them sound that great. But honestly, I thought Robin's work on Chinese Democracy was great, because they were made original by him. Just like Slash, too. When he plays Chinese Democracy songs, he puts his own style to them, which I can't complain about because I think they're really good, but it still sounds better by Robin because he recorded those songs with Guns N Roses. Original songs sound the best only when the original performer plays them.
68corvette08 i have to disagree with you. in my opinion the strength of artists such slash and finck is to play other solos with their style. Robin version of scom, or november rain is Amazing and could totally fit the original album.
68corvette08 you are talking crap about DjAshba wanting to be like Slash, Dj already had that style long before being in GnR and the hat he used it in honor of the guitarist of motley crue who had given it to him before he died and he used it in his memory

Ok well I just watched the Osaka video & while I'll admit he did come closer than any of the other performances I've seen he still falls quite short. Not taking anything away from him but Finck's phrasing on the album is flawless & while I know that is not easy to pull off live, I just really think you have to place these two guitarists in different catagories. Me also can play entire SCOM solo and i'm not even professional guitarist.. You make comparison by Asha very first concert with GNR that for me not really fair tbh

Dj Ashba is not bad, but is a copy of Slash. I saw him live and I notice that his guitar is decorated like Slash's guitar, his pose is equal to that of Slash, a cigar is placed like Slash, wearing a hat equal to Slash ... Him is just a copy, and I'm surprised because him does not need to do that.
first off, there are three guitar players and bumblefoot is the shredder. dj plays the first 2 solos so ron taking half of the third does not mean dj cant play it and its not difficult anyways. second, ashba does not look like slash and slash is not the first or last guitar player to wear a top hat. there are thousands of different styles of tophats and the two are nothing alike. lastly, 2 of the four solos feature here are written by finck so it's a bunk contest to begin with.
@guuuuhhhh And that's my video. Can't you bear my answers, go away, I'm not asking you to be here. But, if you wanna stay, you're really welcome to comment.
I prefer Ashba's versions. Finck just plays the songs exactly as they were written and recorded on the cd, if you wanted that you should just stay home and listen to a cd. Ashba didn't write the songs, they're not his style, he's just adding a little bit extra to make the songs sound more his own and not be "Just a cheap copy of Slash" like every GNR fan keeps saying he is...
Robin toca mais , porém Ashba tem mais personalidade e se parece mais com o Guns... Mas o melhor guitarrista no Guns ainda é Slash , e o maior do mundo é BUCKETHEAD !!!!
if you know little bit about how to play guitar, then you will find out the ending part of solo on sweet child of mine is not hard at all,it's just some bending,,,,and we know that's nothing for Ashba to play,,,,
One reason CD was delayed is because Robin's guitar was 'out of tune.' I find that hard to believe. I'm pretty sure his playing was out of tune. Robin definitely has soul, but he is sloppy and hits a ton of brown notes. Ashba has more fluidity and having seen both Finck and Ashba with GNR multiple times, Ashba is the one who doesn't butcher the hell out of the old songs. BTW Ashba can play the whole SCOM, I believe its just called sharing the spotlight. Compare their Solo spots. No Doubt.
I swear to fuck Finck is the most underrated guitar player.

Lol.. U made my day bro haha.
Robin toca mais , porém Ashba tem mais personalidade e se parece mais com o Guns... Mas o melhor guitarrista no Guns ainda é Slash , e o maior do mundo é BUCKETHEAD !!!!
if you know little bit about how to play guitar, then you will find out the ending part of solo on sweet child of mine is not hard at all,it's just some bending,,,,and we know that's nothing for Ashba to play,,,,
@Europinguino Ashba is best for you, but not for me. I think playing live is more that a pose, more than imitating movements, more than look cute.
Fake, Ashba plays the entire solo. And you show the most dynamic part for Finck. Not very fair ☺️
What was wrong with ashbas solos exactly have you heard one of finks attemp at a November rain solo he butchered it
Did you play guitar????
Dj cant even gets his pull right...its more like he is just playing those notes....Robin Fink has soul in his playing...He is not a poser like Dj.
Lo que pasa esque uno es el que inventa el solo y el otro solo lo toca lo imita entonces obvio mejor lo jace finck
I think you just dont like dj ashba
I’m sorry nothing against DJ but there is no comparison Finck hands down
They've got different styles. Finck was good, but not as accurate as Ashba.
No Doubt.
