The Gospel of John presents Christ as the longed for Messiah and Son of God, who comes to earth as a Jew to restore God's covenant people. Yet the very people who ought to have embraced their Messiah rejected him: “He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him” (John 1:11).
Readers will find that Jesus communicates the will of God by the words he speaks, by the miracles he performs, by the death he dies in love for others, and by rising to life. The gospel story takes place on the earth, but at its heart is the way God is made known to the people of the world.
John is also known for being one of the three closest disciples of Jesus, preparing the place for the Last Supper, witnessing Jesus raising Jairus's daughter from the dead, being present for the Transfiguration, and being present in the Garden of Gethsemane the night before the crucifixion.
