@@thehypest6118 Don't forget the significantly higher pricing, this set alone was ~23 USD adjusted for inflation. 42148 and 42163 are probably the closest in similarity in modern lego technic both having nearly double the piece count as 10024 and only costing 10USD. So with modern Lego pricing for budget sets you'd probably look at 10024 being a 6~7 dollar set. If they'd even sell such a set to begin with.
And significantly lower amount of new SKU's. Almost no competition and fear of counterfeiting from sources like AliExpress. And specifically to Lego, significantly less licenced sets of which Lego didn't themselves own the licence. The consumer smothered creativity to save a buck.

To my knowledge, the animals this set can build were designed beforehand to populate the setting of Bionicle, and then the set was made to be able to build them. This marginal status may be a part of the reason why the set was so limited in sale, but its interesting regardless. I wish there were more such "creator" sets made to flesh out more story-heavy of Lego's brands.
There's tons more Rahi in 2001 products that we have only seen in small renders, or even games, both GBA Quest for the Toa and cancelled PC Legend of Mata Nui. Goats, snakes, bats, and a downsized version of Muaka and Kane-Ra mysteriously labeled as "wolfrat".

(it should be noted that i was not making a serious argument to begin with, hence also calling the original comment a boomer…)

Also have the Po-Koro cows and the smaller red and yellow fish from Ga-Koro you see in MNOG but which were never part of any sets. I love that you can see the part usage for the animals in the game well enough to construct them from miscellaneous pieces in the real world.

  • @noahhathaway9435

It gives me pause to consider that the only reason we got one final recolor of the Throwbot/Slizer gearbox might be that an ostrich appears in the background of Po-Koro in a Flash game, and LEGO got parent complaints that kids wanted playsets of all of those Rahi.
I think the Husi in the Mata Nui Online Game might have had Scuba’s blue gearbox, actually, and this has been dubbed the Ta-Wahi variant.
I love this piece as a Toa torso component, though! You can see its influence on the design of the first Toa torso/gearbox, which was felt through 2009 and beyond due to the gearteeth in the hips introduced with the Toa Metru. And it’s nice to gave them in yellow, purple, and dark grey, since there are no classic Toa torsos in those colors. I’ve always meant to perfect a Voriki MOC using Spark’s gearbox…
And, yeah, sorry to see the Kewa facing backwards. I grew quite fond of the Kewa who would answer my flute and let me fast-travel around the Mata Nui Online Game… although Kapura never failed to beat me to my destination once the Chronicler’s Company quest started!

One possible way to get the _Slizer_ gearbox (Part 32166) in red is to dye the parts from white to red.
It's an interesting technique that I have learned from Brickthumb, and that not every part (or rather, parts that are not made out of ABS plastic) can be dyed. Plus, there are also a lot of other factors to account for when dyeing LEGO parts.
But the end result is often worth it! It opens up a whole new door for MOC potential because it allows for pieces to be in new colors beyond what The LEGO Group produced them in, like a purple Miru, or black Toa Nuva legs. I would love to see a _Bionicle Inspiration Series_ episode focused on dyed LEGO parts!
(And yes, Brickthumb's experiments with dyeing LEGO pieces purple allowed him to build Kopaka as a -Slizer of Energy- Toa of Gravity.)

How interesting they were selling it when I was a kid in Toys “R” Us. I was very lucky to have gotten it at the time.

Those builds are amazing. Nowadays I have a feeling most of lego sets dont use cool mechanisms anymore.

you have to turn the vulture around. the hook is its beak and the little studs are its eyes. i also feel like the feet would be better if put on horizontally to look more like birb feet but thats not in the instructions i think

I have the set! As I recall the instructions for one of the builds are screwed up. I wondered if they have her put out a fix.

Man this would have been a great set to have as a kid. There weren't many basic Rahi so the fact this one was an online-only purchase is kind of sad

Bricks and Minifigs in TX didn’t want go through my bionicle sets. I had about 60 sets. 3 were a bit larger and the rest was regular sets. They just wanted to give me a bulk offer. They were all complete but just vaguely disassembled.

For a complete collection, you need 15 of them for all 15 Rahi.

This set reminds me of the older style of LEGO motto for designs. Minimal new pieces and creatively to fill the gaps. Nowadays tons of new pieces to to complete with screen accuracy.
My favorite of the designs is a tied between the Spider and Kangaroo.

I have this set, but I have no idea how I acquired it. Either it was given to me for Christmas and my folks got it for me from the LEGO website, or it may have been a Toys R Us exclusive in the states. I'm pretty sure there was at least one shop at home catalog that featured it.
