  • A few technical difficulties in this one... the first half, I tried out a beautiful old tape deck that absolutely needs some maintenance (it eventually started refusing to record, which is why the second half sounds different). The old tape deck must have a dirty head as well, because all the high-end was killed, but it ended up giving everything an underwater dreamlike quality that I enjoy.
The second technical difficulty comes in for a bit in the final quarter - the volume gets killed and a nasty hum appears - no idea what caused this, could perhaps be the tape itself? I've been recording over the same cassette for almost 2 years now, so I'll plan to replace it for next time and hopefully the hum doesn't come back. I left that section in since I want to keep these tapes relatively raw, but it's not an intentional part of the sound for my part.

Put some iso-alcohol on q - tip , clean both the playback head and the recording head, all should be good.with tape recording some of the tape wears off and adhears to the heads, dip the swab in iso rub the heads, all crap from the tape will come right off.I love to see people still useing old school media, cassette, reel to reel cd . love the music i subscribed , keep it going brah. Thanks for listening! I would try cleaning the heads like this, but there's a few other issues with the unit, including dirty potentiometers and the fact that it wouldn't stay recording at a certain point so I might need to hand it off to someone with more experience to give it a proper servicing.

Sorry to go on and on , that hum in the last quarter sounds almost intensional the raw is good, all tape wears each time it plays , i think it's iron oxide that rubs on the heads , the tape heads from playing also get magnatized, old school days they had cassettes you could get that would demagnatize the heads . If you had a big magnet and put it too close to your cassette it will erase the sound from the tape . the magnetic tape rubs over the heads magnatizing the heads , you might have a hard time finding that stuff now Cheers

I love a good raw recording too, but I'll have to try to find a demagnetizer somewhere.

Eurorack is a modular synth format that uses patch cables to connect unrelated modules create a larger ecosystem of oscillators, samplers, LFOs, envelopes, sequencers, effects, etc. My setup is using a range of different sampler modules that are usually getting chopped up and triggered by random sequence generators. I find it an inspiring way to work because I can focus on finding the moods and sounds that I want while letting the compositions fall in more haphazardly.
