I could not live as well in the states as I do here in the Philippines. A similar farm and home would be out of reach in my USA base of Pennsylvania. My pension would last 1 day in Pennsylvania and I would have to get a job. Living here in Batangas my pension lasts all month with savings. Growing most of my food year round keeps my other living expenses very low. I would recommend retiring here. I also highly recommend that you learn TAGALOG the national language.
My pappy was born in Kentucky, my momma, Alabama. I'm a gen Xer like you brotha and I was born in Georgia. We got family in Tennessee. It doesn't surprise me a bit how well US southerners can adapt to the Philippines. "A country Boy Can Survive," That song sums up many reasons why. It made #2 on the Biggest hits chart in 1982.I've been going there since 2006. I have a Filipina wife and 3 children in Laguna, I am due to retire next year from the military and live there permanently. Your vlogs are very inspiring, thank you and God bless.
One other thing to consider is what impact you can have to improve the quality of others lives. In the Philippines you are appreciated much more and thanked. Unlike America where disrespectful and entitled people demand from you.
Hey thank you for choosing Philippines. Am a filipino followers of you live in Canada am so grateful that you guys as a vlogger uplifting our country identity.
My country is also a gateway to some other countries like SKorea, Japan, Taiwan, China, Thailand and some of our neighboring countries as well if you want to keep traveling, also 80% of our community speaks English though some remote locals can having a hard time for that. You're always welcome to our country. ♥
I've been following your videos for awhile...and have visited the Philippines numerous times as well. You hit some key points..I share the same interest in the Philippines. Although My tagalog (luzon ) is still a challenge. I'll keep working on it.
If you choose to retire in the provinces.. true. affordable but never in Metro Manila or condos. As a Filipino i prefer the provinces.. not congested. low cost of living.. and simple relax lifestyle.
I travel across Davao, anywhere from P100 for less than 4k, up to P350 if you are going from the airport to out in the province of Toril. My average is probably P150 ($3)
Being retired i need great infrastructure is a must, great hospitals , world class food, the people the cost of living and the ability to travel entire country without taking a plane or boat. in conclusion Thailand is my first choice followed by Vietnam. ill vacation to Philippines but to 3rd world for me to live
you can save more if you just buy a rent to own house from those who offer in the subdivisions then you also need to have a service motorcycle or car you can also get a rental motorcycle with a low down payment. and the vegetable here is free in the provinces for us because we grow the vegetables here in the backyard fresh from the farm, we also have many pet chickens and other farm animals" 😅
Hello, Dr. L. Good day to you again! In my location here in Metro Manila(Pasay City), I just have P70.00/per meal. That is if I get a chicken/pork/fish meal with 2 cups of rice(P50.00 meal + P10.00 per 1 cup of rice). While, a vegetable meal costs me P50.00(P30.00 vegetable meal + P10.00 per 1 cup of rice). Hehehe
Hi dr laway im traveling to Davao the Philippines next month and learned you have knowledge on dual citizen ship. Can you give me advice or tips to approach this? Tyvm
its time to the goverment to pass a bill that if a foreigner will stay here and live here like expat they are protected by laws and can aquire land to develop many americans are good although not all but some foreigners need to have protection in our laws for them to be part of our economic livelihood support to our countrymen
True! Sometimes people don't understand the English as well. When I first moved to London, England 30 years ago some shop keeper told me to "slow down because your accent is quite thick" hahaha
I have been on a fresh beef and eggs diet, no carbohydrates for 11 months and dropped 50#. Now 175#@6'. If you want to feel 20 years younger, this is for you. My question is, how is the beef supply? Thank you for the video.
Local beef is not so good, not really aged. Most of the stuff you can get is frozen from Australia and New Zealand where the beef is below standards for the USA. Generally it is available just not great quality and more expensive than the States.
Yes, even when I get the local Ilongo pronunciation down correct, they'll often laugh and say, "We don't understand because of your funny accent!!" And we all laugh.

2 questions: 1. In your opinion will the Philippines be attacked by China 2. Will the Philippines ever do like Thailand and legalize marijuana? Thank you
that would be great DR. Laway if you learn bisaya. just basic fluency so that you can understand and better communicate with the locals it more you can connect specially with your filipina wife.
I agree! Learning to understand has not been terribly hard, but having people understand when I speak has been challenging because of my accent I think
@@DrLawaytravels dont worry about the accent sir. Its not matter as you clearly speaking it. Like anither vlogger named kulas who lives in davao oriental. His bisaya is basic with accents. But its good and understandable.
Maayung Gabii or is it Maayung hapon doc , Bisaaya is not an easy tongue for the westerner , i keep getting it wrong lol , i agree with you on the reasons for living in the philipines , i asked my Girl to go out and buy enough food for us for two days ,we had plenty and it only cost 3 dollars , she did get a little mad at me in the market later ,she said that the prices double when they see a white guy with her ,so im banned from shopping lol
Yes, there is the thing called a "skin tax" here, but it's actually rare (at least in the Provinces) but if one asks around FIRST and learns what the going rate is for items & services, they can avoid getting "taxed". Plus many, if not most stores will have a price posted on the item, so it's harder to get taken advantage of. Just do your DUE DILIGENCE, just like you would at home!
I don't go to the market in Davao with my wife for just that reason. Was never a problem in the Province though. Funny thing is my wife makes a face when ever people are trying to over charge and then goes off the deep end on them lol. It is like a bunch of Bisaya and I can only pick up like every third word because she talks so fast!
My opinion is that you should stay short term near one of the Malls in Davao and then look around. Really depends what kind of amenities and lifestyle you want. Personally I gave Cebu a pass because of the crime.
@@DrLawaytravelsso is crime really that bad in Phillipines? I watch other vloggers and some of them are changing their positive outlook of Phillipines. One said something of his security ,that he had to move from his home. (This is after four years of nothing but positive.)

I enjoy your videos and have learned from them i will continue to share two others and hope to see you keep them coming thank you again Dennis Dayton
Decent size expat community here. Lots of British and Australians. Meet more of them than from the US, but still not like other parts of Luzon or Visayas Regions. The lowest costs seem to be on the edge of the city to the North or over towards Toril if you don't want western amenities like hot water etc. included. There is a pretty active expat group on Facebook for Davao that has get togethers and stuff.

Our East Tennessee accents make it hard when we try speaking Visaya.
We can't understand East Tennessee accents back in the USA either!
I think the Visayans understand “y’all “ as singular and “all y’all “ as plural.
