It is a beautiful piece of american history, and it has the added benefit of being your grandpas. If it was mine I would inspect it closely it see if everything looks ok, oil it up and shoot it. Maybe soak all the metal parts in some rust protector oil and wipe it down.
Oh, to take these old guns apart you need real gunsmithing screwdrivers. I recommend the Grace USA HG-7 set. Probably some punches too.
I took it to a gunsmith to be renewed. It’s finished and that video posted yesterday to my channel!

Looks to have been re-barrel with a carbine barrel it was originally a rifle or a short rifle and the barrel was of a lot later variety
Potentially so. Planning to see what the gunsmith says, I’ll let ya know.
