I was diving Waimea Bay on the North Shore of Oahu. I came across a depression in the sand and went down to investigate it. I found a crab (that goes by many names and is usually found around the shallow waters of the mangroves). I started filming with my GoPro: • Swimming Crab in its Hole and finished recording it (displaying the typical defensive posture...time to move on). All of a sudden, the crab swam straight up about 20 feet and then started swimming away. It caught me by surprise and started recording again while trying to catch up to it. I have never seen a crab do that. Enjoy... • A swimming Swimming Crab

I’ve never seen, nor knew about how crabs can swim. I also thought about those extra “flipper” things they have, and what purpose they serve when eating them, but never knew they used them for swimming.
Let alone, appearing to be an underwater helicopter while swimming with those things XD

Only some species can swim...you can tell by the back 2 legs whether it's a swimming species or not...swimmers' 2 back legs are flat and rounded on the ends like paddles, scuttlers back 2 legs look like the rest of their legs...

I’m from California and this is the first time I’ve seen or heard of a swimming crab. We have all sorts of crabs here, but I’ve never seen one swim.
I worked 2 years as a commercial crabber for Dungeness on the South Oregon coast, and wasn't aware of that either? 🤷

This doesn't seem much faster than walking though, and a lot easier to get spotted by predators.
Some of them are pretty fast swimmers. But for others, swimming is just a way of getting onto higher places
They don’t do it all the time, it’s usually used as an escape mechanism or to get to higher places
@PogChamp it’s possible, but they definitely do swim that high if they feel the need to. Same with scallops. You wouldn’t think a shellfish like a scallop can swim, but they are surprisingly fast and hydrodynamic if they feel pressured to.

Actually im pretty sure thats a *mudcrab* (sorry if I'm wrong) but it looks like he's swimming in the sea which confuses me cuz I've only seen mudcrab in fresh water and mud.

@Alex Gibbs yes I'm aware that there are many crabs that aren't designed for swimming like the Japanese spider crab but this crab look kinda like a blue crab I'm sure it's similar nevertheless and there sold in grocery store so i don't know why it'll be surprising to see a that are similar or the same type crab swimming

@@isleling5191 because we've simply never seen it happen before, and i certainly have never been told umprompted "hey you know some crabs can swim?", we only ever usually see them walking so its reasonable to assume they decided to ditch the whole swimming idea. (also, their tail is in no way designed for swimming, its barely even visible let alone protuding enough to help in the act of swimming💀)

WOW. Growing up a spearfishman's on and childhood on a Pacific Island, I have NEVER seen crabs swim before. I would pull out those suckers when I start eating them, but now I'll have to take a closer look at them... absolutely intriguing.

@PogChamp no this crab actually swims, most crabs cannot swim to the top, but the family of swimming crabs Portunidae can all do this, they can take off from the bottom (not in video) and then swim around like in this video.
