It's 4am in the morning at a Level 4 Auckland lockdown and I've been watching your videos for a couple hours now. Your work is beyond words and I am stunned by all this historic records you're narrating. I adore your extrapolated and interpolated interpretation/opinion that compromises historic bias of the writers which is just amazing. Your work is very much appreciated and me as a teen now (who's barely into NZ history) is discovering a lot from you in this channel. Thank you so much!
Ah the ole lockdown can't sleep syndrome. Glad you are enjoying the episodes, hopefuly it will push your interest in NZ history onwards and upwards! Cheers
These recounts of the past, even if some of them are your interpretation, keep getting better and better. What a great idea it was to bring the postings even more alive with pictures of warriors and pas.
Absolutely brilliant sir I have been to the site and have seen exactly what you have described and you just brought everything alive to me to be honest. Surprisingly enough it astonishes me too how you explain the arrival of Ngā Puhi through the Awaroa portage and how could you have possibly found that? I love everything about this Sir top class level delivery especially the graphics, maps etc This is the 1st of this kind
Re Awaroa, check out my references in the description part under the video, especially the one by Ian Lawlor and John Joliffe. The Awaroa portage was a real struggle and took a long time, people talk about Hongi's portage to Rotorua, but that only took a week or so, The Awaroa was a gut buster in the mud and swampy conditions plus Waikato had sabotaged it... it took almost 2 months! Glad you are enjoying the episodes, :)
@@kiwicodger how was it sabotage? Can u please do a clip on this particular piece the awaroa track and what things Waikato did to delay Ngapuhi🙏🏽 love ur work bro
Yes Matakitaki is a very important event in the Musket Wars, Motunui humbled the Waikato, but Matakitaki cast them to the wind....... for a while. You'll enjoy the next one on the Pa, Matakitaki has some great earth works.
Thanks for another interesting video. We have this on our list of places to visit. Do you know if you can walk over the pa sites there? p.s great ending :-)
Yes, definitely visit it and the public can walk over it. The Puketutu section, half of it is private property and is fenced off. Normally there are some sheep to keep you companyso just leave the gates as you found them. At the second trench works seperating Matakitaki from Taura-kohia, walk to the north end and use the farm gate, the direct route has a rickety fence to climb....don't try, too dangerous. Next episode will have some good droning of the site.
Hi Nathan, I have attached a link to a map made by missionaries that's at the Te Awamutu museum showing the location of Mangauika Pa. If you have other data to support another location then happy to discuss it. That's what this channel is about. @@kiwicodger all good mate loving the vids but yes its on mangauika rd right beside the single lane bridge, i think it would have been an awesome defense position for kingi tawhio and whatiwhatihoe
Hi Nathan, had a good look on google earth in the vicinity of where you said. It appears on a hill about 150m NNW of the one lane bridge on Mangauika Rd, appears to be earthworks there. Is that the one?
That last word picture of Ngapuhi coming into hearing from the pa as they paddled down the Waipa chanting their karakia and fondling their muskets. Fear, horror, foreboding all piled on top of each other. Not sure I have stomach to watch the next one; your word pictures are too vivid.

Sorry to say but it is apart of our history
I'll put an R18 warning on the battle scene..... :)
Go get em Hongi!
Please don't encourage Hongi, otherwise he'll just keep doing it, and we can blame you.... :)
