While I like the probability percentages, it comes down to two simple things, first, how does the team outscore the other and second how does the team stop the other team from scoring. It can give teams an edge to identify winning strategies and targeted plays tailored for success against teams but when the players are humans there are always intangibles and more often than not these play a bigger role in wins. Of course, even those could be data points but we haven't yet reached the ceiling yet on how data analytics and AI can transform teams. For all the success of Rockets in the 2017-18 season, poor decisions on personnel have been their downfall this season. Someday, if this technology can effectively predict and prevent player injuries, then it can truly become transformational.

For that matter, maybe dunks should only be worth point each. I'm not an avid basketball fan, but I suspect that (non-flashy) dunking is a stable, controlled way to put the ball through the hoop, and so maybe dunks are too "easy" to be worth two points each. (Of course, the difficulty of the shot itself should be also balanced against the difficulty of a team's movement and positioning during the course of play.)
How sad for sport. I know this is bound to happen, but somehow it's sad. I don't want to see talented players and coaches controlled in this way. But yup, no choice I guess.
So this is how they track those ridiculous stats such as "Stephen curry has made more threes after dribbling the ball through the defenders legs and stopping for a picture while picking a booger than anyone in NBA history!!!"
Its there, its about quantifying/formulating it. If they haven't already, teams probably will have means to track it as well. Teams capture all their players biometrics as is.
Analytics, alas, works better over large sample sizes (like... 1000 3-point attempts) than it does over small sample sizes. Over small sample sizes, it almost turns into a coin toss. 0-27 could've been 6-27 or 14-27 or 20-27. Over a season, it all tends to average out; over a game, ANYTHING can happen.

Man that data made them sign CP3 to one of the worst deals ever, traded their 2 wing 3 and D players, and now look.
Problem with high production video pieces over news: When video finally publishes, news has became the past. The Rockets are at the bottom of West so far this season.
The piece kind of worked out. Too many injuries for thw rockets, but they still managed to get 4th and could have gotten the 2nd seed of they weren't plagued by injuries. Remarkable feat considering they were second to last
wow, if this big data and ML did not go south, it'd be something big, very big!
it looks like they did not take refs bias into account
In the future the finals will be fought by computer programmers.
Now we know why the Rockets blame Melo. The "data" has spoken.
The rockets literally play like how video game players play 2k. Either dunk the ball, get fouled or shoot 3’s.
How’s it working out for ya ? lol
LOL Golden State uses advanced data too. Maybe MORE! www.goodreads.com/book/show/34466932-betaball
@@ShareefusMaximus I mean that data might have played a part but Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson are the best shooters in NBA History. Take it step further, how does data explain Curry making Half Court shots consistently, was no pass data on that because only Curry started doing it as a legit shot.
What a flawed correlation. Data was for basketball as technique and practice. It was always there. It obviously tries to sell the idea data, data science, and all trending buzzwords are the key. Basketball is transforming and evolving constantly. The same tactics that worked 2 seasons ago adapted and evolved, because data, analysis and new techniques are in practice every year
That’s pretty cool
MVP Morey
Rockets ranked in the top 5 in the Western Conference right now.
james harden - point guard -
what?? 0:56
how did those analytics help the rockets when they missed 24 treys to throw away game 7 of the WCF?
Morey forgot to calculate how James harden doesn't play defense. Offense is half the formula.
How long did it take Economist to make this? Cuz it was a long time when Houston was a top team.
Can anyone Please suggest a free and easy to used 2-D animation software for making presentations .
I hate how analytics have permeated the NBA - so much of the game has changed for the worse because of it (in my opinion).
If any of these teams were playing the bad boy pistons in the late 80's this information wouldn't do a thing for them. If Bill Laimbeer or Rick Mahorn hard fouled them it's a wrap.
Houston was a fluke last year.
GSW and more importantly, Curry changed the game of basketball. Thompson helped as well.
Yeah but can data stop you from a huge blunder like losing Trevor Ariza?
20/20 hindsight
In the end it’s not the number that win games. It’s the team combined skills.
In the clutch is where analytics fails. Just ask RJ Barrett of Duke vs Gonzaga.
cannot predict the true gift of human being but to detect after move data
Thanks
Funny how they say the midrange shot has become an inefficient shot, in the 90s it wasn't an inefficient shot when Michael Jordan was shooting over 50% from the mid range
Yh. That’s the best player of all time what about the rest lol
@@natygeta6797 just like there is only 1 steph curry and u got everyone in the league taking steph curry shots...even steph who is the greatest shooter of all time only averages about 45% from 3pt range...the rest of the league shoots around 36%...a team with lots of 3pt shooters is easy to beat because at some point they're gonna get cold...that's why only 1 team built around 3pt shooting has won a title
anyone know how to cite this video
Sadly, this video came out about six months too late. Using the Rockets as an example of success would have been a great idea before the 7th game of the Western Conference Finals, where they missed a ton of 3 pointers. Now they're almost a cautionary tale.
Kind of funny hearing Michael Carter-Williams talking about data. Data is why your ass stay on the bench
We feel the Economist is a “ must read “ , particularly when explaining a complex news story on a subject you ( as a Brit ) previously knew little about ... Thank you
Maybe it's time for a 4-point shot too, since 3-pointers have become so popular.
For that matter, maybe dunks should only be worth point each. I'm not an avid basketball fan, but I suspect that (non-flashy) dunking is a stable, controlled way to put the ball through the hoop, and so maybe dunks are too "easy" to be worth two points each. (Of course, the difficulty of the shot itself should be also balanced against the difficulty of a team's movement and positioning during the course of play.)
this gotta be the most enlightening thing ive heard in my life...3 points are better than 2 points...waw...
How sad for sport. I know this is bound to happen, but somehow it's sad. I don't want to see talented players and coaches controlled in this way. But yup, no choice I guess.
6:20, the scariest phrase yet to be said about the data analysis, ! beware of these guys XD !
So this is how they track those ridiculous stats such as "Stephen curry has made more threes after dribbling the ball through the defenders legs and stopping for a picture while picking a booger than anyone in NBA history!!!"
Capture data on mental toughness
Its there, its about quantifying/formulating it. If they haven't already, teams probably will have means to track it as well. Teams capture all their players biometrics as is.
When they needed a win to go to the finals, the missed 27 straigh 3s, against warriors, game 7
@@asterisk911 sometimes what happens in one game is what defines the season, and dying by the three is usually what happens to the Rockets
