I just installed mine about 3 weeks ago. Had our first light rain a couple of days ago, and I ended up with a little water near both front pillars. I found that when I tightened the front most cross bar it pulled the washers away from the sealant and created a little gap.
“Well shit” lol. That was my reaction as well when ours leaked. Had to do a full reinstall since it’s the no drill Spider rack and had to get under the spacers. We used Lexel sealant and had temperatures down to -22 Fahrenheit a couple weeks ago. So far so good with the temperature changes. But I still don’t fully trust the damn thing.
Took me three times with spider rack to seal it up right. Their spacers are much larger than the bolt so it’s a direct channel for water to go into. The last time I did it I went way over board with sealant. Looked like crap but stayed dry.
I have a Prinsu rack on my ZR2 Colorado and the name of the game is GENEROUS amounts of silicone sealant at the installation points and inside the spacers and nutserts coating the threads of your bolts.
Don’t buy it until the major design flaw is fixed. The new Prinsu pro roof rack on my 24 Land cruiser fills up with water whenever it rains. The crossbars have an open channel that retain water. I called Prinsu they told me I needed to dry the rack every time it rains. Major design flaw all they need to do is drill two small holes in the bottom of each crossbar to prevent this water from pooling.
Tom, Noticed that you have a spare tire carrier on the back of your Trek. The one I have (RigD Ultraswing) covers up about 80% of my back up camera picture. I've been trying to find solutions online about a relocation that makes sense, but have yet to come across one. I know others have had similar issues as well, and a video about this would be super helpful. Thanks! Keep up the great work.
Roger that. I actually relocated my backup camera and it works for the most part. Not as good as OEM, but it gets the job done. A video for this is planned. THanks for watching!
LOL...yeah, there's really not much else you can say about that situation eh? I'm pretty sure the leaks are due to shoddy workmanship on my part. I just need to go thru it again and go nuts with sealant I suppose. If you're doing yours in the summer, that would be my advice...sealant and more sealant. Hell, seal the inside while you're there LOL. Best of luck and thanks for watching!
I had NEVER spent much money on a jacket for myself in my life. Now, in my mid 40's, I've finally gotten tired of buying a new jacket every couple years from Kohls or something and still not being very warm. I figured I'd treat myself for once, and I haven't been disappointed. Best jacket I've ever owned. Then again...I've been cheap up to this point so take that with a grain of salt LOL
I had my "professionally" installed at the dealership and I am taking it back for the 4th time next week due to leaking. At this point, I almost want to take it off.
Hell no! Tried it a couple times. Miserable. Cold ground, can't work in gloves and there's definitely a special place in hell for cold-hand knuckle-busters. Yikes!
I’m so disappointed with my Prinsu. The bolts that hold the Prinsu down onto the roof spin the anchors in the roof and Prinsu never called me back with my concerns
sorry to hear you've had leak problems as well. Mine seems to only leak when exposed to direct high pressure water. I'm currently waiting for nicer weather to do a reseal. When I do, I'll make a video of it :). In the meantime, because it's not leaking under normal conditions it's not urgent for me....yet :)
Our Crosstreks have a 'reputation' for being noisy. Have you added any sound dampening to yours? I presume the Prinsu roof rack is "quieter" than the stock bars but was thinking to add some soundskin or dynamat at the same time as the Prinsu install. Any insight?
Yup, the Prinsu is actually quieter than my old basket. I did actually install some Kilmat sound deadener on the roof sheet metal between the ribs while I had the roof liner down. Didn’t go crazy, just a few mats to add some mass and absorb high frequency vibrations. I think it helped. I put the same in the doors as well since I had some left over. I figure if the liner is down already, why not eh?
Im thinking you should get Arc’teryx to sponsor you with a hat giveaway ….just a thought as we are still in the middle of winter here in Ontario Canada .
Tom. So I’m sitting at the light getting off the Tri-State this morning and I look in my rear view mirror thinking, gee that vehicle looks familiar. So we’re then driving East on “W$&&@#” Road and you’re next to me at the light. I say to my wife, “Holy crap, I think that’s Tom the Dilettante next to us!” She says, “Wtf are you talking about?!” I explain RUclips to her and she’s still looking at me like I have a screw loose. I wanted to roll the window down and shout “Tom??” But in case it wasn’t you, I didn’t want to scare the poor guy. Lol. I rewatched this video to see the car again and said, yep, that was Tom. Small world!!! Had to make a left into Costco to get gas.
LOL! If that was this morning (Sunday, 13 March) and you’re referring to Willow road, then yup…that was probably me. I was going to / coming from REI in Northbrook this morning. Didn’t realize you were so close!
@@TomtheDilettante yep that was it alright. We were on our way back home from Harwood Heights. It funny, I haven’t been in REI in years and yesterday my wife were at that same one picking up a backpack for a friends birthday. Give me a shout if you ever want to take the drones out for a fly 👍 ruclips.net/channel/UCr18RF0cJxgxQy0k60WWR8Q
Yeah ya might want to wait for warmer weather or find a heated garage that you can leave the car in for a day or 2 to give the sealant time to cure. If you're planning on pulling the headliner again ya might want to check the wiring for corrosion. Looking forward to seeing the steps you take to fix the leaks. ps careful with the side impact airbags
Yeah, we'll see. I'm not too worried about wiring as the water wasn't too bad. I'm hoping to just be able to peak inside the headliner and not drop the whole damn thing again to see what's going on. I have a feeling it's from the spacers. More specifically, there's no drain hole in the base of the spacers, and it's likely water is dripping into the center of the spacers from the rack and seeping thru the threads. I'm hoping some better sealant around the top of the spacers and some plumber's tape on the threads will do the trick. We shall see :)
I'm glad you video'ed that experiment. I still feel kind of bad for bringing it up but I'm glad the leaks weren't too severe.
LOL! No problem at all. Glad you did. I'm not above putting occasional shoddy workmanship on display if it will help others avoid a similar fate.

Thanks for the tip! Yeah, I think I'm going to be re-defining my version of "generous" here very soon when I go thru this thing again LOL

Did you use silicon on the mounting points on the roof before putting the bolts through

Probably my own damn fault. Ah well. Live and learn right?
@@TomtheDilettante I doubt that!! You out a shit ton of goop on those connection points when you redid it the first time.
Well.... shit. Love your candor. Sorry about the leaks. I'm hoping to get a prinsu on my '15 this summer so this is good to know going into it.

Nice Fjallraven jacket. I've always wanted one.

We use e6000 on our installs and havent had any leak complaints

Maybe if you're lucky all your doors are free shut tomorrow morning.
fortunately everything still opened :). I have a habit of spraying weather stripping with silicon each winter just in case.
