  • Hey guys I hope you are enjoying your Labor Day weekend! For this holiday video we make some Mullein Tincture for use as an expectorant. Mullein is a common roadside herb that has a reputation for boosting the immune system and relieving chest congestion. There are a lot of ways to use this plant for medicine but I prefer the tincture form the most as I find it easiest to use.
    Mullein tincture can be made with any species of Mullein and like my other tincture videos we use vodka as a menstruum due it's cost and effectiveness. When you gather your Mullein for medicine it's best to gather leaves and flowers if you can, however the leaves from a first year rosette will work fine. Once you have your leaves and or flowers, clean them up then fill a mason jar to the one cup mark with fresh herb. After that simply cover with your extractant of choice, cover, and let sit for 4 - 8 weeks, strain and bottle for an effective herbal remedy to relieve chest congestion.
    I thank you guys for watching this video I hope you enjoyed it and I hope you learned something. If you want to learn more about edible or medicinal plants make sure to subscribe!

    I’ve had this dry cough for months-I’d cough at work, on the bus, at home trying to relax. I sucked on cough drops, used cough syrup-everything and the cough just wouldn’t go away! I went to the store today and got a mullein tincture, dropped some in water and boom the cough is gone! Yippee!

    You will get a better tincture if you drain off the liquid in 3 wks, discard the leaves. Repack w/fresh mullein; pour the same liquid into the new batch, it will concentrate its efficacy. Do this w/all tincture productions.

    I took a flower that was growing at work. I seeded areas of my back yard. Mullein likes poor soil conditions and withstands drought with zero problem. My plants are all over 7 feet tall, one in 9" 4:" I smoke it, drink it as tea, make infused oil and now I'll make your tincture. Thank you!

    RE: Equal parts sold and liquid (by volume). To measure out a one to one of a liquid and solid (that will be mixed together) the best way to do it is by measuring the liquid first. For example, using a 2 cup liquid measuring cup, add 1 cup of the liquid first. Then add your leaves until the liquid line rises to 2 cups. The displacement of the liquid, until it reaches the 2 cup mark, insures you have equal volume of solid to liquid - one cup of each.

    In my opinion, I feel, especially during this time, we really need to rely on God for our health and not big pharma. Our food supply is threatened and we need to ask God to help us prepare. We are growing our own garden now! We will be canning and dehydrating the food.

    • @TrilliumWildEdibles
      @TrilliumWildEdibles  2 года назад +9

      I measure it by drops. When I need it I'll use 30 drops of tincture at least 2x a day and no more than 3x a day. I'll do this for up to 3 weeks. Any more than that you can actually weaken the immune system so it's important to use it properly.
      Another thing to mention is that some ailments will only require a week whereas others will require the full three. Think severity, like minor chest congestion should require a week. Whereas something more serious, like bronchitis, will require the full three WITH supporting herbs like Echinacea, Yarrow, and Lobelia.
      Hope this helps some and thanks for asking! If you have any other questions feel free to ask!

    I want to make a tincture with vodka or i can use MCT Oil. After the initial soaking time, should i remove those pieces n just add more died n do the wait process again OR do ratio of 2:1 mullein/ vodka; MCT?
    Would it increase the strength if i heated the MCT with mullein pieces first?

      I found mullein that was close to a yard where they keep steel pipes, several iron working facilities close by, it was about a quarter mile away from the facilities though so I don’t expect anything would happen from consuming it eventually, there is glyphosate in a lot of food we eat which is much worse than anything that could come of that. Plus they are small facilities not anything producing huge amounts of pollution and it was on a forest trail not directly next to them

      I generally will take half a dropper to a full dropper of it which is about 30 drops for half a dropper and approx. 60 drops for a full dropper. Also do be careful to not take it for more than 4-6 weeks as it can cause weakening of the immune system.
      Hope this helps and thanks for asking hmetalmosh!

    • @TrilliumWildEdibles
      @TrilliumWildEdibles  7 лет назад +7

      Some think it tastes awful, others think it tastes great, however most medicine tastes nasty anyways. The flowers make it taste better, IMO. You can know it's molded by whitish brown fuzzy looking mold on top. What's in the alcohol won't mold, and rarely does the top portion if it's just above the alcohol. Also Mullein has very fuzzy leaves so seeing mold can be difficult. I would recommend getting a magnifying glass and taking a look if you suspect it's molded. Hope your tincture isn't molded and thanks for asking Sheila!

    • @TrilliumWildEdibles

      It's been considered invasive for long before that, going back decades actually in some states. However it is likely to be sprayed with herbicide in many places so before harvesting it's best to do a little research to ensure it hasn't been sprayed.

    Shouldn't you use 190 proof with fresh mullein? 80 proof isn't strong enough to draw out the constitutes from fresh plants (gums, resins, etc.)

    • @TrilliumWildEdibles
      @TrilliumWildEdibles  2 года назад +2

      Been using 40% for years and it works well. You will get a better Tincture if made from 190 but I prefer to keep mine a bit more mild. It's really personal preference once you get above 40%.

    • @toniw2900
      @toniw2900 Год назад +2

      I agree with using an 80 or 100 proof alcohol. A friend shared with me that when using an 80 or 100 proof, not only are you drawing out the alcohol soluble properties but also the water soluble properties. This makes it a gentlier and more well rounded tincture. It also lessens the chances of having a negative reaction. When using a 190 proof, you have to add water to make it safe to ingest. In the end you end up with basically a 100 proof medicine. 50% alcohol and 50% water. Plus it saves you from having to do a bunch of complicated math and possibly making an error.

    • @TrilliumWildEdibles

      I never proposed not buying regular TP, I use it at my house. My main point was if your lost or camping/ hiking and need to use the bathroom and you find some mullein to use it. I also agree that people should stop buying those OTC medicines, part of the reason I do this channel. I didn't take your comment as offensive or not positive, you just shared your opinion is all.

    • @TrilliumWildEdibles
      @TrilliumWildEdibles  6 лет назад +1

      I can understand what you're saying and agree it's not better than regular TP. To me excellent in this case is anything other than my hands or dried up leaves. If it's soft and wipes well it's excellent.

      In another comment on this exact video where another poster asked if "that is how it's pronounced?". I said, " Not according to the dictionary, but it's how I pronounce it." Mainly I just grew up calling it that, so I don't really see a need to change it. Ketchup, catsup, bologney, bologna, we all pronounce things differently and this is one of those cases.
