Half dome is a lightning rod.Not too long ago some dudes tried to seek refuge in a cave up there and were barbecued.Gotta get up there well before noon then back down
Yes, not clear how to transfer prusek knots unless untie and retie while on the incline. But prusek is only way to give you a hold right at that point if slip. Having just a carabiner on the cable you might slide all the way back to the below section.
Probably slipped it through the cable it was passing through. It would have fit when unclipped. Helmet smart so you don't crack your head open on that rock hard granite if you slip.
Cool video. I feel like I would be one of the idiots that either didn't use protection or start with the prusick and then ditch it when it got annoying.
Uh....my younger brother and I once did this (Climbed Half Dome with the cables down) in the late 70's, when I was in my 30's. Last time I climbed HD was in 1980...when I was 40, the cables behaved themselves....just like GOOD cables had otter! Soon, I plan to introduce my 2nd wife to the Devil's Postpile National Monument and we will drive through Yosemite to get to where we are going, but at ages 84 and 81...NO cable prancing for us! Also, last but NOT least......I now have a Senior Pass, so it will cost us nothing to drive through the park.....on our way to visit the Devil's Postpile. On another topic.......I've traveled the world to view total solar eclipses, have now seen ten, but the most stunning sight I have ever seen is right here in the states....Niagara Falls. This, we plan to do this spring, but want to wait a bit until full runoff is at its peak. BHE
He's using two prusiks each with its own carabiner. So you can unclip one, untie and then retie it above the cable connection, then repeat for the second one. This way there's always one attached. :)
Yeah. You slip, you die. We did this a few years ago. We used harnesses. Next day a woman slipped and died. 2019 Danielle Burnett. She was not clipped in and started to rain. Saw the helicopter. They did not even pull her inside. She was dangling beneath it all the way down. They do that to save time but in this case it was a body recovery so it did not matter. Still saves them fuel. Tragic. Have fun but do be careful out there.
@@MOAB-UTI’m going with my friend next month and I’m nervous but excited. He’s done it in the off season so I trust him. So harness is the key ? I have to be super secure if I’m doing that 😭😱
@@kudossuazo If you are not confident you might want to skip it. Your friend might be good but he can't save you. That is on you and god. Of course, if you do it, you would want a quality harness, proper knots, etc. Do not go cheap on this gear. You should use pigtails so two ends you can clip on- three in total. This way, one end can stay on the cable AT ALL TIMES for the spots where you might have to unclip to get past a stake. Not sure with the cables down if it is necessary but it might be. with the cables up, we had to unclip about every 20+ feet. *Bear in mind, you will very definitely NEED a device that grabs and locks onto the cable e.g., a "Cable Fall Arrester" aka Speed Fall Arrester.* Good ones are expensive but can save your life. Do not attempt without. If the stakes are not present and you slip, you can still die as you will fly down the cable- in a straighter line, but it will not slow you down a bit. Your friend above you can slip and take you clean off that mountain too. Weather, like rain and mist sets in real quick up there- even on a sunny day. It can kill you, like it did Danielle. Are you aware of Sub-Dome? It is a big dome that you must climb before you get to half-dome. I found it very tricky. There are no cables or anything to grab onto. Falls here can also easily kill you. Also, by the time you get there, your legs (at least my legs) were jello and I am in great shape. BMI 21. Good luck. I think you should reconsider. Enjoy the beautiful area- go to Lake Tenaya- do some valley walks or walk up to Sub-Dome but stop there. Best to start your hike around 4am with a quality LED headlamp and water, and salty snacks. Once that sun comes up, the hike is less pleasant. Watch out for bears. Wear layers. Be aware, the real danger is on the way down. You feel triumpant and over confident. You will take in the view and at this time, it is easy to get distracted and slip and fall. I almost did. I practically ran down, without clipping in most of the way. In hindsight, it was not a good idea.
The cables are anchored quite securely at the top. However, for the winter, the cables are removed from thier supports and lowered to the rock to prevent ice from forming on them and with the added weight, ripping them loose from their top anchor. BHE
I'd say yes. Though your main risk are the people around you. If one of them slips because they're not paying attention, or knocks you over the head with a selfy stick, you'll feel lucky to have the helmet
You would do well to invest in a better camera,.when climbing the cables, ppl love to use fish eye lens for more dramatic viewing akthough very pretty.for me however its deceptive, give people the closest View of reality.
Great video by someone who actually knows what they are doing.
Thanks for showing the use of the Pruseks! Very helpful. I need to see where to buy a premade double loop ended rope like that!

why didn't you show how you tranfer the pruseks, and was the helmet's needed. 🤔
Its not, but if u trip and slam your head. Its over.
it’s always worth protecting your head

Why do they lower the cables in the winter? I don't see any harm in leaving them up all year.
What is the difference between hiking and climbing?
what dates did you do this?
I plan on doing this when I turn 100.

Very helpful vid. Thanks!
amazing video! thanks for sharing
did your shoes make a big difference? i noticed others wearing trail shoes
You had to retie the prusik across every pole?
When off season, the cables are down and there are no poles as far as I'm aware.
Great job! Still not clear how to do the transpose part

Music??
October?
What did you use to make the prussiks?
What date was this?
❤
That’s sooo frustrating you don’t show the way you get around the loop ➰
There aren’t poles and wooden planks anymore?
In the off season they are removed.
Yes there are during the permit season, but not during the off season which is what is seen in this video
What size was your rope? 18 inch or 24?
What month did you go?
What type of climbing rope did you use for your prusik knot?
Was it raining?
That is a real problem. Happened day after we did it- woman slipped and it was over for her. Sad. RIP.
That wasn't hail; it was graupel. Snow pellets.
Music really needed?
prussik on a cable !?
did you need a wilderness pass during the off season??
yes you do.
No if you only want to hike the half dome trail.
If you are backpacking, yes. If you are only day hiking half dome, then no.
@@rctheman5758 Only if you spend the night.

On average it is said to be about 45 degrees

I wonder how secure the cable is to the mountain, if that came loose for some reason, that's a big problem.
Yosemite rangers do regular maintenance on the cables.

Yes. They are bolted/anchored to the rock
so glad you had proper gear you would not go up there without harnesses omg
How did you record above yourselves

WAY to many people on the cables at the same timeand of course the usual shots of idiots who have to stand far to close to the edge atop half dome,
