    International students are mainly interested in the international connections the can make during their university course, but I suppose that it is also important to stress that clinical experiences will have to be held in Italian and therefore it is very important that you learn Italian as well, which would not be as important if you studied any other scientific subjects because you wouldn't have to come in contact with sick, stressed patients who will only speak Italian. The reason why I am pointing this out is because I am a language teacher in Italy and in my experience international students pay too little attention to the difficulties the language can pose, particularly those who are basically monolingual. Being in a country does not necessarily involve learning the local language by "immersion", mainly because attending courses in English and hanging out with international students will mean hardly coming into contact with the Italian language at all. In addition to that only the younger generations of Italians speak basic English (only a very small minority speaks fluent English) whereas people over 40 are much more likely to speak no English at all. The reason I am underlining this is because as a teacher of Italian for international students I've met many people who paid very little attention to what kind of dedication learning a language entails and then struggled immensely when they realised the level of Italian they were supposed to have to hold simple interactions with Italian patients. Also basic interactions of day-to-day life will be in Italian from day one: it is more than advisable that you start an intensive course in Italian as soon as you pass your IMAT to spare yourselves a huge cultural shock in a country where English is really not widely spoken and a huge importance is given to maintaining the local culture, which obviously comprises speaking the national language.

I'm just wondering whether it's possible to firstly get into a uni that has the lowest IMAT score(just to be safe) and then do the IMAT test again in the first year of medicine to move to a higher ranked school.

I have one question: considering the fact that most medicine courses are 'single cycle', would you have the equivalent of a bachelor after 3 years? And after 3 years, would you be able to do your masters at a different university that does have a typical bachelor-master structure? Thanks in advance!

    • @MedSchoolEU

      I don't think they are divided into bachelor and masters. It is one program that requires the completion of all 6 years to obtain both titles. In terms of transfers, that can be done at any point during the studies, but it is a difficult process.

      I am not sure, you have to look at your university of choice finance page as each university may have different rules. However, the rule of thumb is that countries with low GDP pay lower tuition. Also there is a form called ISSE which determines your family's financial status and your tuition is calculated based on the number. As an international student, Italy is probably the cheapest place in the world to study medicine!

    I looked at postgraduate medicine and bachelor medicine and they both take 6 years in Italy. Do you happen to know why? In England with bachelor degree it takes 4 years to complete postgraduate medicine and I am a little bit confused why is it not reduced to at least 5 years. Does it have something to do with residency or you just start all over again with undergraduates? Asking as I am currently studying life science degree and thinking of applying as a postgraduate in the future.

    • @MedSchoolEU
      @MedSchoolEU  3 года назад +1

      In Italy, medical studies begin straight from high school that is the mainstream route to become medical doctor. If you have bachelor degrees, you may be able to transfer credits and have a reduced course load for several years. In rare occasions, you may be able to skip an entire year with a bachelor degree.
      I did not make the system, it is hard to say exactly WHY it is structured that way.

      Transfer program is a complicated procedure. You must prove that the courses and the exams that you have taken in another university is equivalent to the courses and materials taught in Bologna. This also depends on if there are vacant spots in the year that you are applying to. Here is the bologna website on transfers to medical program --> www.unibo.it/en/teaching/enrolment-transfer-and-final-examination/shortening-of-the-degree-programme

      Studying medicine is extremely hard anywhere in the world. However, oral exams in Italy should not scare you because in most universities you have up to 5 tries to pass each exam. As long as you do the work and you are genuinely interested in studying medicine, it is impossible to fail!
      Disadvantages would depend on the context of your situation (your background, finances, goals, etc)
