Excellent points, Shane! I would add that the differences between the two distances is doubled when you "wind up", because you are 1st going backwards, THEN forwards to actually launch the jab or cross. You did already mention, of course, that experienced fighters will pick up on that, and will wait for that "windup".
My first year in high school i used to get bully by a black guy , and I watched your video about how to put someone in a headlock, and couple days later me and that guy in a fight and I put him in a headlock and made him go to sleep >:), now im taking boxing classes, Muay Thai, and kick boxing and brazilian jiu jitsu, no one messes with me since that day. Thank You Shane for your great self defense videos.
oh my God thank you so freaking much this has been a big big help to me and I will definitely use this knowledge to my advantage much appreciate keep doing what you do we need more people in this world like you
I see Floyd Mayweather capitalize off this all the time. Someone throws a lazy jab and he either hits them with a counter straight right or shoots his jab in when they lower that jab side hand.
Thank you for explaining the correct way & not correct way I'm a beginner at boxing, I'm willing to learn anything since I'm learning these things from you. Keep it up I will subscribe to you. I've gotten my ass kicked by other boxers in the streets so I know better not to even try since they challenge me but I lose so I get back up since I have heart & prove its the spirit that they can't beat.
Not to mention you telegraph the punch with the shoulder movement. My instructor was picking me up on this exact thing last night. He said he would move the mitt if he saw the punch coming, he kept dodging the punch. I thought I must be real slow but he pointed out my shoulder moved before my punch came so he saw it coming every time. I got better as the session went on but its something I will need to work on to get rid of it. I guess I was focusing too much on power with my jab.
Jabs aren´t supposed to have a lot of power. Jabs are for measuring distance and keeping your opponent from stepping in easily and at the same time are for getting used to your opponents rhythm and pace. This of course is when fighting in a ring where there are rules. In a street fight you shouldn´t really use jabs.
Nah when you crank up your punches like that, you give your opponent a sighn that your about to punch. And plus all punches should fire from the inside, dont wind up even with hooks and uppercuts, with hooks and uppercuts you have to dip and turn and use your obliques to rotate into your opponent, and actually using jabs in a street fight works way better if you actually know how to jab
sorakazesenpai a stiff quick jab with no gloves. i can see some value in a streetfight. talking boxer jab, not regular-street-joe jab that couldnt hurt a fly on the wall
Yep, Mr. Matta, that was how I was originally told too! Just like the development of our brains, we have to learn (sometimes painfully) about the good and bad things. Keep the treasures, discard the junk that's just luggage!
This is explains why I was hit in the face with a few jabs. Now I know the huge differences. Thanks Shane, this is a big help for my next sparring match.
Shane, I train with your workouts EVERY single day. :-) I am proud that after seeing you doing the jab or cross 500 times, I was able to see all the mistakes :D . It is just great :-)
Thanx Shane your techniques really do help I do muay Thai kickboxing and one of the techniques that I'm working on right now and found effective that confuses guys I fight with is the left hook where you step forward swing to the side come back up and throw the hook at the same time gets them almost every time thanks again bro
Besides the issue you pointed out, you also moved in with the jab. The good one you threw without moving, but the incorrect punch involved you stepping in with the body and head. I could exploit that movement: as you punched, you lower the guard on that side and moved in, and moving your head in just increases the chance of a counter strike landing square in the face.
How to counter as u slip and know what attack to throw in real fight situations in a real fight u cant process the right shot for situations please go over the foot work angling off and throwing technical shots while slipping or angling off
never had trouble with that one but most beginner and in general mistake and I catch myself doing all the time is leaning into the punch which is what I thought you did wrong in the second jab.
Nice Steve Fox look ya got there :P Yeah I don't really rock my shoulders, if ever. Coach made me be constantly aware of my habits and actions and be on high alert at all times. Never get comfy in a fight.
i think the fail is some people don back to the defensive position ant put the hands a litle dow. thats make the punch distance to impact increase. but i gonna see more videos in this interesting channel.
well shane ....the mistake you just show us is a common mistake in my muay thai gym fighters lose their guard in 2nd or 3th round i did experience that mistake when practice sparing i think that thing happened cause the body started to lose power stamina runs out that mistake absolutely will happened ever for profesional fighters like my master ... he usually do mistake in 5th round
in the 2nd punch, your punch twisted too soon. your elbow was facing out mid-punch, rather than twisting at the very end. it makes the punch really easy to parry/counter.
+Jonas Abraham could have been the viewing angle but for the "correct jab" he didn't appear to pivot his hips at all or snap his shoulder forward. Most great jabbers make these motions when they punch.
+ProgHead89 You would pivot your hips (mainly our backfoot) for a cross, not a jab. You could step forward while throwing the jab for extra power but you don't pivot for a jab.
Shane i AM practicing muay thai for about 1 year, but most of the time i'm just boxing (my kicks really suck). My question is: should i continue on muay thai or should i exchange for boxing? I AM really good at boxing By the way, and Also a big fan of mayweather. I would really appreciate if you answer me ;)
What I thought I noticed first about the bad punch was the fist dropped. But I watched again and can see the shoulder rock forward before the punch. And yes some times I make that mistake. But I guess that comes with trying to throw with a lot of power.
Shane- I noticed the head come forward on the incorrect one more than the correct one, is leaning too far into our punches something we should work on too?
I know you probably already found out by the time I'm writing this, but if you're throwing a jab, you most likely shouldn't, since a jab is more for measuring distance, seeing the position you're at and what can you throw and to do some damage as well, but it's not a ko punch, even tho anything can be a ko ko punch.
Couldn't have said it better myself. To expand upon that, though, a ton of your anxiety comes from the unknown of what might happen in the fight. After you've been punched in the face a few good times during sparring, you'll lose that fear pretty quickly and be able to manage your adrenaline more appropriately. Without practicing fighting, you can't master that fear and adrenaline (pre-combat and post-combat shakes)
Wouldn't the second jab be much more powerful since your fist is pushing in a straight line, while the first jab travels downward since your fist begins from a higher position?
I steady accurate jab is far more important than a powerful one. Plus if you are quick enough you can time it and use your opponents forward moment to work against them and increase the impact of the jab. The Donald Cerrone and Edson Barboza fight is a perfect example of that.
it's about getting into a rhythm/ into a zone :) it helps people focus. Personally I like to keep my hands fairly steady but the circling thing is very common
Francisco Carvalho Thank you for the answer Francisco but I don't really understand why that's the case. If you're circling your hands, for 50% of the time, your fist is actually further away from your opponent, and moving backwards. Could you elaborate on your answer please?
If i take your logic 50% of the time your jab is going to be quicker in the other half you have more time to defend your opponent attack. I cant explain correctly but tomorrow ar the gym im going to try it and also ask my coach. By the way i do nuay thai
There is a kid who wants to beat me up. I have tried to be peaceful but he always calls me names but when I come around him he wont say anything or do anything. What should I do
Shane I am a lover of all different fighting styles but I always have a problem getting tired , what is the best way to stop getting tired during a fight ??
It's all about practicing fighting. Let's say in a typical you would do sth like 3 rounds that each last 2 minutes. When you practice that during training you should extend that time to maybe five rounds that last three minutes each. This way you drastically improve your stamina and also know that you have energy reserves during the two minute round and can really go fullpower. If you still happen to get tired in a match, try for some active recovery. You don't always have to be on the offensive, just try to stay out of your opponents reach for a few seconds and move around him/her. Then if you feel recovered, you can go back to attacking
Shane I have a question, my brother in law is getting bullied and the teachers and principal's won't do anything, he wants me to deal with the kid, what should I do? Please respond.
You can't fight his battles for him. All you can do is teach me and learn to stand up for himself. Whether fight or talk tot he bully. teach him to fight and whether he wins or loses it doesn't matter because he stood up for something,
next time show the whole body so we can see you r legs and also your front than we can see the rotation of it ......check the distance and your right elbow during the jab
Sweet science of boxing.... muai thai doesn't know how to punch the way boxers do... i hope they do ... kicks and knee no question... elbow shots... no question... but boxing department... that's the problem...
Wouldn't the second jab be much more powerful since your fist is pushing in a straight line, while the first jab travels downward since your fist begins from a higher position?
yes, it is more powerful. But the jab isn't really meant to be extremely powerful or a knockout punch in the first place. It is for measuring distance, keeping your opponent away and stunning them for a splitsecond if you manage to hit them :) Also, the downwardsmotion before throwing it,makes it easy to detect and dodge
+Bloo Bell 'the jab isn't meant to be powerful' there are plenty of top fighters who have built their entire fight game around an extremely powerful jab. if all your jabs are weak little punches like this guy's, then tough guys will just walk straight through them. you need your jab to hurt and make the guy second guess not just ignore it
Power jabs are a risk/reward type of punch that beginner and lower intermediate boxers should use with caution as opposed to the standard in-and-out fast jab. They're generally best as a timing punch when you've got the rhythm and/or angle on an opponent, or even better, if they don't have good head movement.
I love how you show the wrong moves as well as correct Shane it really helps!
Thanks for the awesome videos Shane! I've improved so much through this channel, thanks

Christopher Teran for sure
+Merwin Aamir it's a black guy
You are full of shit.
Alan Rowe lol ik right 😂😂😂

One of your best tips! Thanks a million!
I see Floyd Mayweather capitalize off this all the time. Someone throws a lazy jab and he either hits them with a counter straight right or shoots his jab in when they lower that jab side hand.
Gotta say Shane, these videos are amazing and I am really learning a lot from you. Keep up the good work!
Wow, nice Shane. I didn't catch it. This is one of those little thing that separates the good fighters from great fighters.
Thank you for explaining the correct way & not correct way I'm a beginner at boxing, I'm willing to learn anything since I'm learning these things from you. Keep it up I will subscribe to you. I always thought the second job was better because you're putting more snap/power into it. God dammit Shane

a stiff quick jab with no gloves. i can see some value in a streetfight. talking boxer jab, not regular-street-joe jab that couldnt hurt a fly on the wall
sorakazesenpai yea a stiff annoying jab that keeps your opponent away works anywhere
Yep, Mr. Matta, that was how I was originally told too! Just like the development of our brains, we have to learn (sometimes painfully) about the good and bad things. Keep the treasures, discard the junk that's just luggage!

Brilliant video - Love the small detail but it's really powerful
It's a bout a fundamental mistake as a fighter can make.
Thanx Shane your techniques really do help I do muay Thai kickboxing and one of the techniques that I'm working on right now and found effective that confuses guys I fight with is the left hook where you step forward swing to the side come back up and throw the hook at the same time gets them almost every time thanks again bro

Great advice! Any chance you can give us a guide for kicking combos? I loved the boxing combo video you did!
i think the fail is some people don back to the defensive position ant put the hands a litle dow. thats make the punch distance to impact increase.
but i gonna see more videos in this interesting channel.
well shane ....the mistake you just show us
is a common mistake in my muay thai gym
fighters lose their guard in 2nd or 3th round
i did experience that mistake when practice sparing
i think that thing happened cause the body started to lose power
stamina runs out that mistake absolutely will happened
ever for profesional fighters like my master ...
he usually do mistake in 5th round
in the 2nd punch, your punch twisted too soon. your elbow was facing out mid-punch, rather than twisting at the very end. it makes the punch really easy to parry/counter.
I would argue neither jab was correct but yes pulling your punches back before you throw is a sure way to get countered or hit nothing but air.
+ProgHead89 please elaborate
+Jonas Abraham could have been the viewing angle but for the "correct jab" he didn't appear to pivot his hips at all or snap his shoulder forward. Most great jabbers make these motions when they punch.
+Jonas Abraham that being said when he is moving his hands he does a better job at snapping his shoulder but still doesnt seem to pivot much.
+ProgHead89 Exactly what I was thinking
+ProgHead89 You would pivot your hips (mainly our backfoot) for a cross, not a jab. You could step forward while throwing the jab for extra power but you don't pivot for a jab.

Since when Eric joined muay thai ??
Keep doing mma, kicks are important just keep practicing or get a personal trainer at your mma gym
Start boxing
Switch, u could do boxing and for kicks taekwondo
Cartman doesn't work out
What I thought I noticed first about the bad punch was the fist dropped. But I watched again and can see the shoulder rock forward before the punch.
And yes some times I make that mistake. But I guess that comes with trying to throw with a lot of power.
Not gonna lie, I thought it was about your lean forward on jab two
Nice I always thought I had something off now I know what it was, thank u
The backwards motion is exactly what they teach in ITF TKD. Useless for attacking
Very scientific and logical 🙂
Awesome tips!!
at the wrong punch....you also move down the shoulder...everybody is gonna see you are gonna throw a punch and they can avoided
Nice hairstyle, Shane! =)
But, how about the long hairs in the fight?
What techniques do you advise against long-haired? Grab & knees?
I saw your shoulder drop 1st before you mentioned your hand moving down for the wasted movement.
Ur videos r supwr helpful bro.thanks alot for the tips!!!
Shane is it possible that can you do a video on how to properly throw the looping right hand?
Shane- I noticed the head come forward on the incorrect one more than the correct one, is leaning too far into our punches something we should work on too?
Marc McCormack Well obviously lol
I know you probably already found out by the time I'm writing this, but if you're throwing a jab, you most likely shouldn't, since a jab is more for measuring distance, seeing the position you're at and what can you throw and to do some damage as well, but it's not a ko punch, even tho anything can be a ko ko punch.
Good tip!
Great video. . What kind of ringside gloves U got???
Nice video..makes alot of sense
I like that circle thing :P
I swear thats how benson henderson jab is lol...
Good video thank you Shane.
I think the incorrect punch is a natural habit of trying to put power and speed behind the jab. Thanks for the video to train those out.
but its a jab.. your not trying to knock him out with it
Cool video...how did you draw on the screen ?
I notice you actually telegraphed the second punch by moving your leg as well.
+HydraWolf1 your upper body and lower body should correspond so when punching there is corresponding footwork that will move your legs
Great video! can anyone answer for me how do you loose fear or intimidation before a fight starts, or if your most likely to be in one?
spar, to get a feel of what a fight is really like. It's like stage fright. the more you perform, the easier it gets
Shane I'm 6'2 and got long arms but I'm kinda slow can you give some tips on how to use my reach as an advantage
Can you make a video about different martial arts ?
Nice tip
Cheers mate cool tip
got it... nice one!
Well done
Wouldn't the second jab be much more powerful since your fist is pushing in a straight line, while the first jab travels downward since your fist begins from a higher position?
jab is not for power
Jab is for measuring distance, keeping your opponent away, and zeroing in when youre about to rush in.
I steady accurate jab is far more important than a powerful one. Plus if you are quick enough you can time it and use your opponents forward moment to work against them and increase the impact of the jab. The Donald Cerrone and Edson Barboza fight is a perfect example of that.
I'm not a boxer Shane - can you please explain the value of circling the hands like that?
it's about getting into a rhythm/ into a zone :)
it helps people focus. Personally I like to keep my hands fairly steady but the circling thing is very common
the circling is for your jab to be quicker, as you should know the jab is to be fast, by circling the fist it takes less time to reach the opponent
Francisco Carvalho Thank you for the answer Francisco but I don't really understand why that's the case. If you're circling your hands, for 50% of the time, your fist is actually further away from your opponent, and moving backwards. Could you elaborate on your answer please?
Bloo Bell Is there not a cost in terms of predictability though Bloo?
If i take your logic 50% of the time your jab is going to be quicker in the other half you have more time to defend your opponent attack. I cant explain correctly but tomorrow ar the gym im going to try it and also ask my coach. By the way i do nuay thai
shiiit i rock all the time.. glad i watched this..

i drop like that all the time i use my shoulders as a point of refrence sometimes do you think thats why
what do you think about aikido is it effective on a street fight?
what are things to do to keep fom injuring my wrisp hitting the heavy bag
Man I started recording myself hitting the bag and I noticed i rock my hands when i throw them :(
If you need be told this, you're not good enough to beat anyone who can take advantage of it.
Shane I am a lover of all different fighting styles but I always have a problem getting tired , what is the best way to stop getting tired during a fight ??

The first dreadlocks video of Shane 😂
I saw the mistake on the 2nd jab straight away.
This is pretty basic but good
it's kinda like chambering
Should I train when I'm sore Shane ?
Super_saiyan 42 To an extent, if your weak and sore, DONT. But if youre sore but can keep going, then do it

Shane I have a question, my brother in law is getting bullied and the teachers and principal's won't do anything, he wants me to deal with the kid, what should I do? Please respond.
He's your brother.
Defend him.
I'm pretty sure Shane would answer: "Talk to the bullies first, if they still bully your brother, go kick their ass."
Fobia alright, thanks man. Maybe i'll fight the kid at my brothers house
dont do anything crazy and remeber the "i dont what problems" stance
Francisco Carvalho alright, I'll remember that, thanks
You can't fight his battles for him. All you can do is teach me and learn to stand up for himself. Whether fight or talk tot he bully. teach him to fight and whether he wins or loses it doesn't matter because he stood up for something,

haha, what I was thinking!
I'll have to remember that!!!!
I'm a boxer and you are picking up your elbow lol so you might wanna check yourself no offense it's supposed to be tight
the 'correct' jab looks weak as hell
