- Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny reviewed by Siddhant Adlakha. Opens in theaters on June 30, 2023.
By yanking Indiana Jones out of retirement yet again, for a fifth (and hopefully final) movie, Disney proves that some things should be allowed to end. Or, at the very least, it proves that a franchise resurrection should spend at least some of its 154 minutes doing something other than trying desperately to justify its own existence. Earnest final efforts from Harison Ford and John Williams couldn’t rescue a movie so directionless and haphazard, or action that fails to recapture the swashbuckling joys of the originals. By asking why Indy is on this adventure in the first place, and what the character gains on the other side of it, Dial of Destiny concocts paradoxical answers that fail to meet in the middle. It’s a film about letting go of the past and moving forward, but one that refuses to do the same.

So what I'm hearing is that my memory is indeed correct: The Indiana Jones Trilogy ended with Indy and his father riding off into the sunset with Sallah and Marcus Brody.
You have poor memory. There's also fourth and fifth is coming.
Just like how Star Wars ended when Vader threw the Emperor down a shaft and Luke redeemed his father.
@@KingPingviini what 4th there's no 4th and u cannot convince me there's one

No.The story of Indiana Jones ended walking off with Marian Ravenwood on his arm and fond memories of Willie Scott. 3-5 are a mess.
They should've just released the originals back in theaters for a few weeks. Retro theaters should be more of a thing.
Quentin Tarantino has done his part. More filmmakers should follow his lead.
Why not open your own theater? You got the name, and all.
100% agreed!

It’s actually impressive that the company with probably the most financial resources in the entertainment world can consistently make terrible decisions that derail their ten year plans of tentpole feature content.
When it’s less of a vision from a couple people and instead goes through a dozen studio heads, that’s a recipe for disappointment
And yet, millions keep on going to their movies.
Mindlessly throwing money at old franchises won't make great movies.
It‘s called: too big to fail.
It's Hollywood. The decisionmakers at the large studios are not filmmakers but corporate bureaucrats who lack imagination for anything but more $$$.
How a billion dollar corporation can consistently miss lay ups is beyond me. Well here’s a drink for another fallen hero.
The "message" comes before profits.
We all know why.
Lol bro don’t act like if this film was a banger you and your kind wouldn’t still drag it.
That’s how. They played politics. Now the people are in response.
@@tonypepperoni3679 Haha! So true. The MESSAGE is what sets the stage for everything that comes after. Frickin' MESSAGE. 🤘😆
Lay ups 😂.
You know what would be a perfect way to end the Indiana Jones series? He and his father finally bond, and then with his two other friends they ride on horses off into the sunset with a swelling score by John Williams..oh wait!
Exactly!!!
Those three are the ONLY Indy movies in my house, and that WAS the end!
Disney is beating a dead horse trying to make one more dollar!🙄
The Last Crusade was the PERFECT ending to a beloved series; the protagonist finds the literal Holy Grail and then literally rides off into the sunset. It would be impossible to end a series any better than that.
Thank you, Lucasfilm and Disney, for digging up all of my childhood heroes and absolutely breaking them down into unfulfilled shadows of what they used to be.

I'm grateful to Dial Of Destiny and Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull for one thing. Their existence means that my personal favorite, Temple Of Doom, is no longer the red headed stepchild of the franchise.

Spielberg's direction it's about 33% of what made Indy movies great, his action sequences have always been exciting, take that away from the film and you get this.
I'm not sure Dial of Destiny will hit 67%.
Mangold is still a decent director when it comes to action. He did to the Wolverine and Logan after all.
Spielberg's direction on Crystal Skull was lazy and uninspired. He clearly didn't give a damn.
From everything I've read the direction in Dial is superior to Crystal Skull. Unfortunately, everything else is just as bad.
Indeed. For all of Kingdom of the Crystal Skull's problems (which are many and sundry); Spielberg still knew how to direct a decent action sequence.

sigh.... this is absolutely heartbreaking. Lucasfilm and Disney's answer to everything is nostalgia and it's destroying everything.
You desperately need to set your priorities in life if a movie broke your heart.
That is a well that will some day run dry if they never make anything new to be nostalgic over in the future. It's all about balance, which is currently out of whack
Funny how no one complained about nostalgia back in 2016 when Lucasfilm spoon-fed Star Wars audiences "fan service and nostalgic cash grab: The Movie". Nah. People will still defend Rogue One like it's Citizen Kane (thus proving my point).

It’s like companies forget how to make a franchise these day. First off; make something NEW. CREATE A NEW UNIVERSE. Creativity is only dead when you lack it. Star Wars 1976 was very vague in terms of lore compared to the later movies because they started with a solid foundation and built on it with things that are relatable and interesting. It shouldn’t be that hard…
Corporations lack creativity.
It's very very hard. But they just don't have the people who can do it
There exist thousands of scifi, fantasy and adventure books out there. All of them could be done into a movie or even into a whole franchise. But the big companies are so lazy and they dont want to try something new. They try to squeeze out what they have over and over again. And the people are tired of it. Even Marvels peak is long time over.
The problem is that these dipshit companies won't do something original because it's a hit or miss. It's not safe. They realized that bringing old media back and reintroducing it to a present audience and old fans keeps the money coming in. There's no art in movies anymore, and if it is it's very rare.
@@ranulf8477 the reason for that is risk aversion ,as budgets baloon hollywood wants safer and safer bets and tha means nostalgia, sequels and reboots
They want us to apologize for the past but can't build anything worthwhile not dependent on that past.
What they needed to make was an Indiana Jones game, uncharted/tomb raider style

They couldn't let the franchise end on the crystal skull. We can all agree on that! Perhaps they should have looked/asked tom cruise how he made top gun maverick. It perfectly revived the old franchise(?) and took notes before starting this indy 5
Maybe People will learn how much fun lucas and Spielberg brought to these films even the 4th which isn't the best but still had fun and dynamic action.
My biggest gripe in modern movie making is the over reliance on CGI… remember when movies used real props and shot scenes on location ? Those were the days.
Yup those days are long gone with most films it's just cheaper to use CGI and hopefully we just buy into a movie that looks completely computer generated.

This is so disappointing. The studio have all the money, technology and talent they need at their disposal. There's no excuse for making a bad picture.
So… if rebooting anything is only going to result in failed expectations and no one cares for original creations anymore, then what exactly is there to look forward to in the entertainment industry?
My real question is how Kathleen Kennedy has kept her position after regularly leading severely underperforming properties. If Lucasfilm were a factory of almost any other product, and consistently produces low quality products that customers complained about, she would have been replaced long ago.
Indiana Jones should've ended with Last Crusade. I'm amazed LucasFilm would try to revive and continue with this "franchise" with Crystal Skull and Dial of Destiny.
I'll concede, though, that some of the Jones-themed computer games had some merit storyline-wise: Fate of Atlantis, Infernal Machine, Emperor's Tomb, etc.
What a big old whige....the movie is a bit too long, but apart from that it's fun.
