- This is a fantastic interview that I've been wanting to share for a while. There is soo much insight in this video.
The original can be found here: motherboard.vice.com/2009/11/9...
Met him in Lawrence Ks. He just came out with 'Since We Last Spoke'. He performed then sat at a table an sold that cd for 10 bucks. Very humble dude. One of the 3 or 4 catz who inspired me to make beats and buy an MPC.
This guy totally does not care for money or any other contemporary values. He's a fuckin diamond in todays DJ scene. True passion! Shocking. Still wonder how much networth he is, just out of curiousity....
His house has a specific vibe, somewhat a creative muse that is. I bet it inspires him.
My all time fav track of his is smoke and mirrors, brings back some memories of love that I lost.
no doubt check Digi Hendrix 3000 very different and its all for the love of beats and djing. also raps too
I put deadringer era rjd2 on the pedestal with DJ shadow/madlib… Not many people with that talent willing to understate it. The day I found the lol coxhill sample without looking for it was the day my opinions on records became valid IMO. Stated.
Smoke and Mirrors definitely brings back the vibe of the early 2000s for me. That and ‘Final Frontier.’ Wish we could go back.
1 of the greatest and most underrated producers/djs of all time
Ten years later and I’m just getting into modular. Video is still awesome. 😌
I met this guy backstage at the Gasparilla Music Festival in Tampa. Shook hands with him and there was a wee exchange between the two of us just minutes before he took the stage. He seemed really excited to meet me, and was very accepting of coming face-to-face with his fans. He is a cool guy and his set killed! If you ever see him, say hello!
Who wouldn't be excited to meet you tho
Yo same thing happened to me, he was at some back door after his met shook his hand and gave him props!
This man is a hero and a true inspiration that has led me to discover a deliberate taste in music, and then always return to learn the things I couldn’t properly understand earlier. He truly is my hero when it comes to music.
Soul Position in, sole possession of
Poll position, hold your breath and listen
While I resurrect these twenty-six letters
Most underrated musician/baker ever!
wow RJD2 is a mad scientist. i never knew that. very smart man you can tell.
Get yourself together. Move to Philly, buy a house, cop a CS80, get 6 or 7 interviews, eat cobbler with them, book some back to back 45 gigs, listen to Eugene McDaniels.
Fun fact re: mad men, and was basically a movie re-run channel, and there was some rule that was going to get enacted that they would be taken off major cable packages if they didnt make original programming. Mad Men was one of the shows they pretty much crapped out just so they could stay on cable and it turned into this huge show
This is passion. Kind of wish he stuck to the style of Deadringer but still...so underrated.
When I first met RJ, he said he said he'd wished he could play drums (on top of everything else he knows how to play). Def getting there.
This is fucking awesome i mean look at that gorgeous modular synth :D
A living legend. Rjd2 beat conductor
What cool cat...Mad respect..
This dudes a genius, super dope ❤ 🔥
Act 2 is one of my favorite beats of all time
That synth at 5:30 i think Madlib would absolutely destroy
!!!!
I love this dude.... like screw the fancy cars and mansions... I wanna be able to just throw down on a CS-80 and jam.
oh my god i FUCKIN totally thought the title was a joke, but this man actually made a cobbler
I miss the days of easy finds of magic in Philly…now I’m waiting out the old mpc’s and dead musicians; not to downplay RJ, but it wasn’t only dope you’d find on Water, but dope.
I remember reading about RJD2 in Scratch Magazine, and he kind of ostracized himself, by trashing producers and beat makers how didn't play instruments, and strictly sampled. He has some heat, but he shouldn't have trashed everyone who samples. There's a difference between the loopers and the choppers. I don't really sample anymore, and I own a bunch of gear now, but back in the day, all I could afford to do was sample. I was a chopper though. I would still sample, if it wasn't for clearances. I have mixed feelings about the new sample sites. I liked hunting for samples off of old records. It was fun, and in most cases, they sound better than the sample sites now.
gold!
fucking awesome. one of my favorite artists.
But how was the cobbler, though?! Goddammit.

That interviewer is tall as hell!
nice video. great artist.
the MPC looks so lonely & neglected
hes so cute :)
Woooooooooow !!
official mad scientist
OMG RJ is from philly??? Haha I live 10 minutes from that street!
He's actually from Oregon but grew up in Columbus.
Anyone knows where I could download this vidéo in better quality ?
it's cool he bought all those synths that herbie has on some liner notes, it's just a shame hes not really a synth player.
ahah this is awesome
Dat height difference. But his dope ness makes up for everything.
Dayman ah ha haa!!
I think that interviewer is like 6'4? RJ is prob 5'9-5'11...
whats the song starts in 1:31
I used to know its name but i forgot it and im a bit lazy to find it back :(
WTF, how tall is hippie longstocking?
No, RJD2's just a short dude.
AM I THE ONLY PERSON WHO DISLIKES PEOPLE WHO LEAVE DOORS OPEN :)
gracious of RJD2 to let a flea-bitten, homeless guy in for a bite. OK, buddy, time to head back to the shelter, got to make some music. bye bye
