Travel back in time to the inaugural NHRA Southern Nationals in Commerce, Ga., just outside of Atlanta. With the uncertainty of the future of the track, let's travel back in time to the first one.
This event was the first sanctioned after the facility made the switch from IHRA sanction to NHRA.
The quality is a little rough but good enough to appreciate this blast from the past. In addition to the great racing, there's a glimpse of the nighttime qualifying from the original April 1981 event.

1982 was the first time I was at A NHRA DRAG RACE AND IT WAS HERE AT COMMERCE I HATE TO SEE THIS TRACK GO AWAY ! I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER THIS ONE BEING 57 YEARS YOUNG , BEEN TO MANY OF THEM SINCE ALL OVER THE UNITED STATES ! GREAT VIDEO !
Amazing,the cars are slower but the racing is better the show is better and the fan experience is off the charts.

Seems that 2021 could very well be the last Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway. Sad to see this place go. Been to every Southern since 93. Love that place. So many friendships made there. ☹️

Nhra has put the track up for sale and it's being marketed for uses other than racing. Some big corporation is set to purchase a large piece of property adjacent to the track and I've heard they were also looking at track property

Stan Kakol id be willing to bet that Atlanta dragway won't exist past 2021. It's not looking good for the March running of the Southern this year. I was talking to a rep from D.R.A.W. this afternoon and our thoughts are if they don't pull off the race in March it will not get a rescheduled date and the Southern Nats will be no more.

I was there. So close to that track from the bleachers. Unreal. And I made it to the 2021 event to see it close down.

Back when the bleachers were right on top of the track. Mo blower restraints. Man, anything that blew off the car, those fans in the stands would try to catch them. Lol!!!

Do y'all have any footage of a Funny Car driver from Dallas named Frank Cook? He had a FC called the Drag-On Vega and then made some nose later on in Top Fuel. He was a legend along with the Smokey Bear FC.
