      Music is cake. Some like chocolate, some don't. I don't think this reactor thinks Chocolate cake is bad (he seems like a great guy but he is a musician who has his musical likes and dislikes). I love this song also. It's one of the band's songs that has grown on me most over time (started off so-so for me - a rarity for this band - but is now beloved by me).

      Some Band-Maid fans don't like it because they don't consider it "pure" Band-Maid, although you could say the exact same thing about "Smile" which is widely loved among the fans. I think this reaction is the result of being convinced that it's the one bad Band-Maid song by that vocal minority rather than judging the song for what it actually is.

      Actually the song and the subject go together perfectly. If you know anything about the late 60s, rock music often was about man's abuse of each other as well as the planet we live on. Especially the possibility of nuclear war.

    When I saw your announcement post where you pre-apologized for this reaction, I was a little surprised, because this is a song that I can't really imagine anyone having *super* strong opinions about either way - it has some cool bits and some bits that can easily turn people off, but nothing like, overly dramatic in either direction. Turns out you were just apologizing for feeling meh about it 😅 I think I felt overall quite the same way you did about it. But really, I *like* 'negative' reactions, if you can even call it that - as long as they're fair, it just proves that you're honest. Having an occasional 'negative' reaction means that people can actually enjoy your positive reactions because they can trust you're not lying to them when you say you like something.

    My friend, this song is very controversial. It was not written by them and nor does it produce (Tony Visconti = TREX, David Bowie, etc.). Apparently it was David Bowie's producer who suggested they collaborate for something they had prepared. It was one more opportunity for the girls. It has the smell and taste of an 'Americanized' track including its lyrical content. It doesn't seem like something that fits BAND MAID's journey. In my opinion it is more a moment of doubt or incomprehension on the part of the producer although the girls resolved it with dignity and professionalism.

    There will be no backlash from the community over this song. The most controversial song in their discography. With that said, if a band doesn't experiment they don't learn and grow. Did they learn from this song? They don't let anyone else produce their music, they don't mess with the song writing process and Saiki has the last say on what is to be released. Tony Visconti loves them and wanted to produce a song of theirs, Saiki and Miku flew to NY to record the vocals. Saiki had to learn each line in English and took 8 hours to record, while the rest of the band worked on the music in Tokyo. To me it sounds over produced and forced, not the organic style that is Band Maid. Compared to Bubble and Manners, songs of a similar genre, this is not their best. I still like it though.

      @@evilducks3710 Not sure where the notion that this song wasn't written by them comes from. Unless you just mean the lyrics, which were written by a friend of Mr. Visconti's. The music tho was written by Kanami; she said in an interview that Mr. Visconti liked the demo right off the bat, and very few changes were made musically to it. What you hear is pretty much what Kanami wrote, and the band tweaked into final form. As far as musical "era's" goes, this song released in Conqueror, an album of astonishing diversity (compare, e.g., this song with "Page," "Rinne," and "Wonderland"). "The Dragon Cries" does not feel stylistically incongruous to me for this band; in fact, it feels quite similar to me as "Chemical Reaction" in their next album.

    Dragons, a poignant commentary of the sad, self-inflicted current state of the world, is a great plunge into the bluesy rock style given to us by Hendrix and others. And the music was written by Kanami, while the lyrics were written by Tom Kenney and the song was produced by Tony Visconti. It has been suggested that when Tony finished mastering the song, the Ladies label remastered it. Leading to the over compression.

      ... everyone listens to a song differently... pays attention to different things... different aspects are important to everyone! That's why music is generally controversial 😈
      I find "The dragon cries" to be a very intense song, both musically and lyrically. In addition, I just love variety (as I'm sure you do too) ... and this song is definitely different, we can all agree on that, right?

There is plenty of room in my heart for "The Dragon Cries", especially live where the production/mastering and video issues are not there. (Btw I disagree with many people's criticisms of the lyrics and video - the topic is good and occasionally writing serious, or even miserable, songs is good. @trfatman 10 месяцев назад +1

    Yeah, this song divides the Maidiacs... I'm in the "love it" camp, and here's why.
    First of all, that is NOT hair metal. You need to go back to the late 60's, early 70's for this sound. It stems from the psychedelic blues rock of that era. Think Hendrix and Cream. This is the music of my childhood. There are a few songs on the "Conquerer" album that have this guitar sound.
    Their label wanted them to partner with Tony Visconti on this song, and Tony definitely put his stamp on the production. You don't get the variation you find in most Band Maid songs, to the point that almost sounds like a cover instead of an original.
    But come on...the chunky guitar riff along with the warmth in that bass tone, and those drums....those drums! That is capturing the spirit of Ginger Baker right there. Yeah, it's very straightforward (except for the breakdown...that was just...wow), and in your face, but for an old geezer like me, I love this old school sound!
    And no, that was not a mistake on the guitar fill before the second verse. It ended that way to keep tension moving into the next verse. Listen to the note Saiki sings on "Then" to start the second verse. It's flatted. Almost dissonant. They don't resolve the tension until the end of the phrase, which fits the lyric "Then you left me..."
    But hey, I look at Band Maid music like ice cream. Not all are going to be my favorite flavor, but they are all still good!
    (I still gave you a Like)

  • @ApexRadius
    @ApexRadius 10 месяцев назад

    In a vacuum, it's a pretty decent song. (The middle/solo section is killer and, if you listen with headphones, there's some pretty cool musical stuff going on in the mix.) It's just that some people think it doesn't quite measure up to the band's entirely self-written material. I tend to agree. It sounds a liittle too much like an homage to the producer, co-writer, and 1970s hard rock.
    My theory is that the people who love this song love 70s rock. The song is familiar, nostalgic, and expected. And those are mostly the same reasons why others don't like it so much. Different strokes apply here. IMO, the band did it better themselves on "Flying High" and "Manners." I think they're both great and I'm not even a big fan of that style.

This song was done for an Anime series, I think by listening to the song the lyrics were written first and the way the singing was going to be sung established and then the song was written around that. Some songs are written and then lyrics are added second.

    This was recorded with a New York producer, who had lyrics written in English for them, an attempt to meddle with perfection, and breakthrough US market . only saved by the girl's individual styles. However when left to themselves in live , away from meddling hands, it is noticeably better, So you are right on, with your criticism. i was let down too. Good on you for sticking to your guns in your review and I am sure a lot of Maidiacs will agree with you, but as i said, live away from studio, it is better, but..... not pure Band Maid.

    I like this song. It's not my favorite, but it's good. The biggest problem I see with it is that it's not finished. Apparently Kanami sent the music to Visconte, expecting feedback. Visconte didn't have any and just rolled with what he was sent. I can see this confusing Kanami because , to her, it was just a draft. I haven't heard the live but people say it's much better, maybe because the band got a chance to tweak it?

      As far as I can tell, it's the same exact song live but it definitely has more punch and dynamism. I think Kanami's live sound for this song has a bit more modern distorted tone, there are obviously fewer guitar layers, and Saiki sings it a bit more aggressively. It does make a difference.

    Oh. Oh no. As much as I *adore* this band, I just can't handle this one. I see a lot of guys my age and older in the BM community talk about them as reviving the spirit of classic '70s and '80s rock and metal, but I don't really hear that at all, and tbh think it does them a massive disservice. They're way more interesting and inventive than that! But then there's this song... You totally nailed it when you said it's lacking anything that makes it Band-Maid (instrumental section notwithstanding). It just doesn't feel like them. The production is part of it, I think.

    • @ApexRadius
      @ApexRadius 10 месяцев назад

      Yeah, I agree with this. I hear a lot of different things in their sound but I don't hear a predominant 70s or 80s sound, either. I'd guess a lot of people identify with the fact that they're both musically adventurous and highly melodic, which feels in short supply in the hard rock and metal scenes in recent years. (Although, that's not entirely true if you know where to look). Plus, we all hear different things.

    I can't understand why this track is disliked so much. Some do not like that it is in English, some do not like classic rock feel, some complain about the mix and compression, some just want more complexity to it.
    Whatever it is I think the set the bar so high that it makes anything that is really good look ordinary. Plus iam a classic rock fan and it has many of those qualities. Sometimes you want to hear a song that is not always ck and the song is not pushing the tempo to 200 bpm like most of their stuff. Sometimes you want feel something at a tempo where a groove is at an optimal level.

    Fair enough. But I' am one who likes this song.And what it's all about. The meaning of the words, & the images, are a bit too real & confronting for a lot of people, so that puts them off the song itself.
    Unfortunately it is a theme that many bands have been singing about since the 70's, but the problems are just getting worse. No wonder the Dragon cries, as it watches us say goodbye to the world.

  • @threemonkeysk
    @threemonkeysk 5 месяцев назад

    Yeah but it was still good! It wasn't all theirs, Kanami had to fit the song to the lyrics written by a friend of Tony Visconti (A fan) who produced it with Miku and Saiki who were doing the vocal part in America, the music was Maid in Japan and shipped out and mixed by T V. It's argued that there's to much compression in there.....But I like it : )

  • @surfingasongwave
    @surfingasongwave 10 месяцев назад

    Oddly enough, *"Blooming"* is the so-called album filler. It's the one song that Kanami was worried about getting done for the album, and went to the rest of the band for ideas. But the whole band works together as a unit so they're never _really_ out of ideas. But as others have pointed out, Tom Kenney had heard them and therefore was a fan, and he convinced Tony Visconti to go to a concert in NYC; Visconti contacted them and wanted to produce them. Kenney wrote the lyrics and Kanami wrote the music (and Tony made no changes to her writing). There's a lot of echo in the mix but it's for effect and I don't hate it. Some people think the lyrics are atypical (which they are - they are not Miku's style) and the video is heavy-handed (wow, they should listen to songs written during the Vietnam era!). Compare this to *"Fate"* on the previous album "World Domination" - it has music by Kentarō Akutsu and lyrics by Kobato Miku... or *"Mirage"* on "Conqueror."

    • @ApexRadius
      @ApexRadius 10 месяцев назад

      The first version of the credits I saw for "Fate' only listed Kentaro Akutsu under arrangement and "Band Maid" as composer, although the current credits listed on Spotify list "Band Maid" (Kanami) and Kentaro as co-composers and there are no arrangement credits at all. Did he co-write, arrange, or both? Just curious.

    Tony Visconti who is a great producer took Band-Maid and (it seems) tried to take everything that makes them special and remove it from this song. They do manage to shine during the breakdown and Kanami's guitar work is always great but the rest is pretty generic. It's a fine song for anyone else but we Band-Maid fans are spoiled and expect more. They didn't write the lyrics and while I appreciate the message, I agree it's a bit on the noise. Miku, who writes most of their lyrics tends to be much more poetic, even after translated into English. It was a fine experiment but I'm glad they haven't worked with Visconti again and are continuing to do things their way.

    as far as it goes this is my least favorite band maid song, the musicianship is there saiki and mikus vocals are as good as ever it just doesn't sound like a band maid song. Tony Visconti being the discordant influence for me nothing against him its just a collaboration that was off for me.

    This song is not a pure band maid song. It's the only song I hate. It's a song that doesn't seem like a band maid arranged by a super famous American?music producer.

    I don't like the production on the song even before I found out it was done by Visconti

    clarification... almost everyone loves the song... almost no one likes the 'you should feel guilty' video theme

      99% of BM tracks are upbeat, rocking, inspiring gems that make you feel great and enjoy the moment …. why this track would go so depressingly opposite in message and tone is a mystery.

    This is my least favourite Band Maid song in their catalog. They didn't write the lyrics and Tony Visconti produced it. Plus the visuals of the video just don't mesh with the positivity and vibe of what Band Maid are all about about. Tony is a great and legendary producer but he did not do the ladies any favours with this song.

    The only BAND-MAID song I don’t like. The lyrics, which didn’t write, are maudlin. The chorus especially is super annoying. And it’s strangely lacking a hook, which other BAND-MAID songs have in abundance. Of course, MISA and AKANE are bringing it, as usual. I’m not saying it’s bad, though. It’s just not made for me.
    If you want a song about protecting the Earth, try FIRE LANCES OF THE ANCIENT HYPERZYPHERIANS, by THE SWORD. If you’re looking for a poetic song about having empathy for the less fortunate, try HOW BEAUTIFUL YOU ARE, by THE CURE.

    I love BM but this song really shows the hand of Visconti (the producer) and does not suit the band at all so it's always a skip for me. Not a good song for Band-Maid standards.

    To me, it's one of their weakest songs. And as you said it's a more than OK song. That's also why we often say they don't have a bad song.
    But this song, from the music, the message, the MV to the language is one of their less band-maid-like songs. I'm putting most of this on the fact it's the result of a collab with an american producer who didn't really understand who he was working with.
    Nice reaction, I'll probably be here for the next one.

      I hope you are! There’s about another 10 Bandmaid videos on the channel if you get bored in the meantime 😂

    It is a Tony Visconti song and so was produced and written by somebody else. The song was over produced and over compressed and the MV is over preachy and while it is still a good song. It just isn't Band Maid. A good song but will always feel somebody else's song. So no great drop off in subscribers for your comments. The fact that the song is rarely played live probably says it all.

      Produced by Visconti and an external lyricist, yes. Band-Maid wrote the music.

    Sad to say it but this is a skip for me. I don't like it at all, like you say I think we have just been spoilt by the maids awesomeness.
