What I learned was that you could make a ton of money basically copying Blistex's formula and packaging it in a way that appeals more to younger people for double the price.
@@auliamate go to where she showcases the 5, she was obviously going for familiarity or 'popular today' over ones that actually work. Thing is, they just use the buzz words everyone associated with skin care, and it works well enough to get them to buy again. If companies had a product that actually worked, they would sell one per year to each customer. Planned obsolescence, and all that. Instead, those with money pump out ads and Google views for something they want you to constantly use, going through a few at least per winter. This entire video really ended up being about marketing, more than actual data or comparisons. Honestly, though, if she wanted to end up using blistex and being happy without being forced into research, should've just used reddit. Collective intelligence, everything else falls through the cracks.
And for non musicians, brass players put their lips through more in an hour of playing that most people’s lips experience in a week. Constantly blowing air past them, they get covered in saliva, and they’re vibrating constantly (they essentially blow a very fine tuned raspberry into their mouthpiece for hours on end).
Agreed! But I live in the UK and have never seen the beeswax blistex, only the cream-type one that comes in a tube like the other ones in this vids and it has saved me every winter honestly
It's definitely variable - I used Blistex for two weeks on the endorsement of a trumpet player and that was the absolute worst for me by fat. I suspect that Blistex may maintain your lips' condition, but if they're already dry something else might be better.
9:58 Heya, here's a note about your concern about the alcohol in Blistex. Ingredients like cetyl alcohol are fatty alcohols that are actually beneficial for providing formula thickening, application slip, and improved skin-feel in products. An "alcohol" is not always drying or volatile.
I once had to panic buy a 100ml tub of vaseline for my lips because the store had ran out of all other lip balms, but it works so well that I haven't looked back ever since.
I remember one thanksgiving I traveled to my aunt and uncles house and had the WORST chapped lips ever. Me instinctively licking them did not help and in fact made a huge red inflamed area around them. My aunt and uncle didn’t have petroleum jelly or chapstick so I had to ask my mom to bring some when they arrived the next day. Ever since then I always make sure to have a tub of petroleum jelly with me for when colder weather comes
Showing the products in a mirror to both get it nicely in shot with the paper AND having space to manipulate it properly is genius level cinematography/production, good job!
I used to have crazy sensitive lips, so many lip balms made my lips burn. Vaseline advanced healing has been my lifesaver and it’s like $1.50 at Walmart!
@@akaghostkid same! I either use Vaseline or Aquafor, which is Vaseline with humectants (glycerin) in it. Btw, what does that "advanced healing Vaseline" contain different from the regular one? (Which is only petrolatum)
Hey. Is it just me or does Vaseline take time? When I started using it (plain vaseline) it made my lips worse for 2 whole weeks (peeling and stuff) Even though I drink a lot of water. But then it was fine.
As soon as you brought out the blistex I was like, THAT'S THE MVP RIGHT THERE! I have the chapped lips struggle very very often and have tried heaps of lip balms and so far it's always blistex that has actually worked to heal my lips rather than just give a temporary cover (even though the menthol and camphor originally made me feel weird about it). I get the version in a little pot rather than a stick and found it tends to work best!
Oh this is really useful and funnily enough, I landed on the same answer last winter: Blistex works the best. Now I need the same video but for dry hands in winter!
I bought a Korean hand cream that works really for me. I always buy Japanese and Korean sunscreen and lotions because they’re obsessed with skincare over there and they have lots of good products that are non-greasy, effective, and are gentle on my sensitive skin
I have been swearing by JR Watkins’ hand creams! I find it’s not greasy nor watery; it’s thicker than most I’ve tried and doesn’t leave my hands feeling tacky, wet, or dry, which many others do. I use it at night when going to bed, and reapply it I get up in the night to use the restroom. Highly recommend it, and it doesn’t break the bank!
This has been my biggest health & beauty question for the last 10 years. I always got peelly lips even using lip balm brands that people recommend are really good. I found out that I am just allergic to common lip balm ingredients.
Simple petrolatum might do the trick. One of the most non irritating substances, plus, the best occlusion effect, which is the most important thing when protecting the lips from winter
I hear youuu. still not 100% sure what my allergy is to, but right now I believe it to be beeswax. I was using vaseline for a while and that didn't irritate my lips, but I think it ended up hindering my lips ability to produce their own moisture to the point where I felt like I had to reapply every 30-60 minutes, so I went back on the hunt for something else. Right now my holy grail is the laneige sleeping mask, which I use as a regular balm and not just a night product, and it's saved me from the extremely dry climate+winter air.... the biggest downside is that it's expensive :'):') but just glad that i have something that works for me
@ yesss I am a big believer in using some kind of mask at night. I have dry skin but live in a pretty humid environment, I can get through 90% of the year applying lanolin/another thicker lip balm before bed and not needing lip balm during the day. My sensitive skin for some reason is fine with the fragrance SPF balm I use. I still have not figured out what it is in most lip balms that makes them unusable for me :(( but it’s fine bc I found what works anyway
I have discovered that I am sensitive to Shea butter. That stuff is in every fancy and natural cosmetic and moisturizer these days. But no, I bought a container of it (to make my own lotion, before I knew the problem) and yup that stuff gives me a straight up rash.
I've been swearing on the Blistex for years! Here in Germany Labello probably is the most common Brand but it's low-key a little expensive imo with ~3€ for one stick, so one day I just picked up the Blistex and it worked wonders. I use the "Classic Lip Protector" that comes in white packaging. It doesn't have that "menthol icyness", and it's a little sweet on the lips so that nice as well. Highly recommend!
I hate Labello honestly. If I forget to put it on once, my lips will immediately crack. Vaseline I only apply once or twice during the day, and then once before bed. When I tried labello for a week, I felt like I had to apply it every hour. I threw it away after that week lol
I used to use Labello religiously when I was younger. I’ve been using different lip balms for a while, but I can’t really use ones that contain menthol anymore. So I might try the “Classic Lip Protector” next. 😊
labello isn't bad but it does really depend on the type, the standard one and the hyaluronic acid ones are trash, the men's one is okay, but the Med Repair version is the only one that I consider good.
@@annahackman2539 Yes! Ever since I realized brushing my teeth makes my lips dry, I've never had bad chapped lips again! Now I do vaseline before I go to sleep and in the morning right after brushing my teeth.
So a tip for those who still have chapped lips even when using a chapstick that makes it a bit better. If you're somewhere where you can, then first wipe your lips off. Then apply water to your lips. I use a paper towel soaked in water and hold it to my lips for about a minute, but you can just run a wet finger across your lips a few times. Then after letting my lips dry off a bit (they should be kinda moist, but not wet ... sorry that it's hard to describe) I apply the chapstick. You can get the same effect by putting on your chapstick quickly after getting out of the bath/shower. The point is just to make sure that your skin gets some extra water. I had to go this extra mile after moving from somewhere that averages 75% humidity and rained multiple times per month (a literal swamp and rainforest) to somewhere that apparently averages 0%? Though I think the source for that number is off and it's actually that it averages in the single digits somewhere. The point is, I had to go the extra mile since my body just couldn't acclimate on its own. This is at least what worked for me. For reference, I also use Blistex. Though I have to be careful since I live with someone with a mint allergy, which the menthol absolutely triggers.
That's the only way I get my lips to get better fast if they're chapped! I add a layer of moisturizer after the water and then vaseline or some jojoba oil. Works great!
Some people are suggeting vasoline, which is fantastic for sealing in moisture that is already there, but doesn't actually moisture the lip itself. I've used a combo during the winter for years. I layer lip balm that moisturizes (i use burts bees, but have changed it several times over the years) and then vasoline on top. It looks a little dumb, but helps a ton when im out walking my dog in winter
I live in Wisconsin and I leave a chapstick in my car year round and it can handle being in my car for most of summer too. Original chapstick freaking rocks.
This is the first Melissa-led video I've seen on this channel and I love the aesthetic choices here, yall found so many cool ways to film mundane things
Aquaphor all the way! I bought a Burt’s Bees Popsocket a couple of years ago, scraped the Burt’s bees out, and put Aquaphor in it. Now it’s always connected to my phone. Everyone always asks where I got my Popsocket from too and I hate they don’t make that collaboration anymore. It’s the only lip product I use other than lipstick.
I came here looking for someone to say aquaphor! It’s what I switched to last year during winter and it destroyed my lips. I will never go back and it’s cheap too.
Blistex babyyyyy. A few years ago the corner of my lips were cracking and I got the medicated squeeze tube kind and worked like a charm, and now I just use the normal Blistex that was in this vid and nothing works better
This is one of the questions that has plagued me all my life and one of the reasons why this channel is so awesome is that you guys are always asking the real questions like this!!!
I was laughing as you ended up with the Blistex because starting the video reminded me I needed to apply some chapstick so of course I pulled the blistex out of my purse. Part of the reason I like is that the smell of the original type reminds me of my grandma. She preferred that chapstick and she always kept a second open stick on her vanity for her to be able to apply chapstick for us with her finger. (Okay so I also learned at age four that you don’t share chapstick.) The only kind I can remember more fondly was the kind they used to sell at the toy store with like Miss Piggy or Grover on the label.
I've always struggled with absurdly dry lips, no matter what I did. I can't stand anything with aroma or perfume on my lips, and I never have much luck with very waxy stuff. Had a great lipbalm for a while, combined it with a nightly lip mask, and didn't have cracks for the first time ever. Both got discontinued, struggled so hard to find any replacement. Now it's been about a year where I just use pure lanolin or baby ointment (either one) for balm and at night a thick layer of menthol lip balm under an insanely thick layer of baby cream. I don't like the mint, but since I don't eat or drink in bed, and it works wonders, I stick with it. It's really just as good, and more easily available for fine prices (plus less worries about discontinuation).
I've been making simple beeswax calendula and chamomile salves from home grown plants and organic beeswax from a local bee farm. Absolute game changer for me. I use them for both my face and lips. Literally just 4 ingredients: beeswax, dried calendula and chamomile flowers and sweet almond oil. Super simple and really effective
My go to for years is Carmex Classic Lip Balm (stick form), $1 most places! After this video I looked up the ingredients and it makes sense why it’s so good. It has petrolatum, lanolin, beeswax, paraffin, camphor, and menthol! Similar to Blistex. I guess we can trust tubes that are cheap and have “x”in their names. 😅
I tried Carmex for a long time but always found I needed to keep re-applying... and when I realized that I saw other friends & wind instrumentalists in music school doing the same. Carmex has a tendency to dry your lips over time which leads to the feeling like you need to reapply... Try the Blistex, and if that doesn't work, Aquaphor.
Halle Berry recommended nipple cream in an interview ages ago. I was so mad at chap stick that I figured why not give it a shot. I have no regrets. It works.
I too have tried sooo many different lip balms, and the beeswax based ones with the fewest ingredients seem to work the best for me, especially applied right after I wash my face
Because dry lips is a seasonal thing and post about it in the summer would be foolish. OMG THIS CRISTMAS VIDEO CAME OUT 3!!!! DAYS!!!! BEFORE!!! CHRISTMAS?????? This MUST be GHOST STAR MAGIC
petroleum jelly(vaseline) ftw, you need that thick "extra layer" feeling(from occlusives) to protect your lips when they're chapped so they can heal and become not chapped. im personally with taha on this one, gotta moisturize and then protect
I do two things. I drink more water and use a lanolin creme made for chapped skin from breastfeeding, and it's a darn miracle solution so far. The skin in those areas are very similar.
The only one I ever use is Burts bees, and only when I get a crack in my lips. I don't use it for moisture, but rather, when the air is super dry, I use it to help keep the natural moisture from escaping. At least that's how it works in my head
It's nice that they brought in the experts, but the fact that they didn't find out the difference between hydration and oclusion Before setting up an experiment is wild., it's very easy to find that information online. I'm kind of disappointed, the experiment could have been interesting if planned After gathering the information
maybe that's why taha's method worked? the use of moisturizer to add hydration and then the lip balm to seal it all in would probably do wonders for chapped lips
@@DampeS8N answer in progress makes sense for difficult questions, not for facts that you can find with a 1 min google search, or by watching any of the videos of the experts you decided to interview...
@@RainebowEvee yes, that's what I thought, he had it right from the beginning, he already understood the difference between hydration and sealing that hydration in/protection
I've been using vaseline for years now, and I wholeheartedly recommend it. You can get a big tub for cheap, it's fragrance free, and it seals moisture in really well. The only downside is you have to apply with your finger, but that never bothered me.
Yes, Blistex is the best when your lips are already chapped (I personally prefer the one in the squeezable white tube, it's more medicated, which is needed when they are already chapped.) But Taha is kinda right, no reason to use a lip specific product. To prevent chapped lips altogether, Nivea cream in the blue tin is the best. Nivea cream isn't a lip specific product, it's a general moisturizing cream so it gets overlooked as a lip product. I have oily skin and can't use it EXCEPT for on my lips. It moisturizes and then seals in the moisture. I use it just before bed and after showering in the morning, just twice a day. Nothing fancy needed, it's inexpensive and available everywhere. And Nivea smells good and is pleasant to apply unlike Blistex.
Same goes for me ! But sometimes, when i couldn't buy that Blue NIVEA ,i go with the NIVEA Soft as base along with NIVEA body lotion. It kinda works, though.
petition to have AIP make a video on acne treatment cuz i need that fr loll all of the ones ive found or been recommended either dry out my face really bad and make my face irritated and makes the breakouts worse or make my face really oily and make more blackheads. 😭😭
I’ve had severely dry lips for years now (possibly a perimenopause situation) and I may have finally found my solution - O’Keeffe’s Lip Repair Lip Balm. Bonus: it tastes like cherries! I tried soooo many other balms - homemade, essential oil based, doctor recommended, etc. - and nothing worked for long.
I don't remember if I've tried their lip balm, but their hand/foot repair creams are basically magic. It will basically let dry, cracked hands heal themselves overnight, and a few nights for the thick skin on dry, cracked heels.
@@bloodgain when I tell you what a relief it’s been using this stuff… my lips have been flakey, cracked, and bleeding(!) because I lost so many layers of lip skin.
I also have chapped lips right now, to the point my lips started to hurt in some places. My tinted lip balm from Nivea did nothing to heal my lips. But then I picked up my Vaseline jar and applied it and it WORKED SO WELL. Vaseline is not sticky, non-fragrant and it actually heals the chapness of your lips. Plus the benefit of a Vaseline is that it's cost-effective (a 100ml jar can last for years), convenient to use (if you accidently scrape extra product out of the jar you can just scrape it back in the jar) and multipurpose (you can apply it on your hands as well and you don't have to carry a lip balm and a hand lotion separately, a single jar of Vaseline is enough).
I use the simplest possible, unscented, cheap, panthenol product I can find in a pharmacy - a provitamin b5 ointment. One winter, I had painful cracked mouth-corners that wouldn’t heal and got it recommended by a doctor. It’s meant for things like minor burns, cuts, damaged nipples etc. and is now just my miracle product. It can feel pretty thick and like a “shell”, but It helps hold on to moisture so well, that my lips even look plump! I just apply immediately after showering or washing my face - sometimes ALL OVER my face and hands, when it gets really cold outside. Any time somebody complains about a skin problem, I come to the rescue, with a 100ml tube from my bag. Then I start raving about it like a maniac, which I’m probably also doing right now. 😭
Aquaphor is great too. It’s just a barrier cream, but you can put it anywhere your skin has barrier issues. I’m getting over a cold right now and it literally saved my skin around the nose and lips, because I had to use a ton of tissues and had to breath through my mouth all the time and it helps me a lot. Also good for dry elbows, cracked heels and helps keeping retinol creme away from the eyes. Thing is, most lip balms and oil’s aren’t designed to lock in moisture. In winter, that’s an issue. I’m only using them on top of Aquaphor, because they feel nice.
Use whichever soothes your skin, I've started using lip balm as an over night treatment. I sleep with it on. Wash it off in the morning. Then reaply after the morning shower. Keeps the hydration intact.
Here in Australia one of the go-tos is Carmex. I never really trusted the typical brands either and thought they were just cheap and wouldn't work, so got stuff over double the price instead. But one day I gave Carmex a try, and I've never gone back. It has sunscreen in it too! I've had chapped lips year-round since I was a kid, and it took me many years to find a winning formula that works for me. I put Carmex on anywhere between once and a few times a day, and when my lips actually chap and there's loose skin, I use a lip scrub. The scrub is really really important because no lip balm is gonna get rid of that peeling skin, you need something to get it off & exfoliate!
Smith’s Rosebud Salve is my fave. It’s basically just Vaseline and cottonseed oil with a tbh negligible amount of fragrance. $7 and it still somehow feels fancy to me despite just being a basic occlusive and emollient. The tin is so cute.
Been using blistex for over 15 years. Does the job and easy to get. I carry a lot around because I lose them sometimes and if I run out... oh it is bad. Just so painful. I still need lip balm in the summer time. Not sure why but I just have such dry skin all year round.
Blistex never worked for me personally. I swear by Laneige’s mask at night plus the balm in the tube. Honestly, sometimes I use the tube and not the mask at night. But the mask saved my lips years ago.
I tried the Aquaphor lip balm, because Aquaphor itself works on my skin. The lip balm irritated my upper lip so much, it crusted and peeled off, burning the entire time. So I start applying lip gloss to draw focus away from it… and my lips improved SO much. My hypothesis is the lip gloss isn’t so much hydrating as it is sealing in my natural moisture. I understand why this video didn’t cover these categories, but I love my lip oils for keeping my lips hydrated.
When it's spring and summer, I NEVER wear lip stuff, chap or lipstick, because my lips are usually healthy but these mess up the barrier and dry me out. But right now I've started using the dreaded lip chap since it's so cold and windy - I can't wait to have healthy lips again!
A few years ago I was also looking for a lip balm without fragrances and unnecessary additives that felt good. After a few attempts, I found a recipe that I can make myself: Cocoa butter, beeswax, jojoba oil, almond oil and vitamin E (tocopherol). It's important to find the right ratio between the solids and the liquid oils so that it's easy to apply in winter and doesn't become too soft in summer. As production is not worthwhile if you only want to make 2 or 3, I always make a large quantity as Christmas presents.
coming in w my two cents: i used to have the most chapped lips and tried so many different balms, I found that for me the most effective ones were 1. dr akerman's naturals: a bang for your buck, I got mine on discount for about $1.50? they're usually less than 3 bucks and it helped me so much! has mostly natural ingredients, keeps my lips real hydrated and it smells good! 2. Aquaphor 3. Vaseline on top of my lips when sleeping Another tip: whenever you drink water keep some drops on your lips and rub them together. lip balms won't work if they don't have any moisture to trap and don't lick your lips to hydrate them! saliva is meant to help degrade food!
dark blue blistex lip medex is my go to. it handles kansas weather well. it has a menthol cooling feel but not perfumed. even use it on my hands when they bust open from cold. put it on in the morning and leave the tub on my desk and go about my day.
I usually put some form of product on my lips for overnight use, then leave them naked during the day cause having stuff on my lips tends to annoy me. I figure I can sleep through the annoyance better than having it on during the day. It does seem to help me to have a good overnight lip product, and I wake up to noticeably softer lips in the morning. A couple years ago I was in a hospital for many days, and I had no lip balm with me. I asked the staff for something, and they gave me a little blob of A+D Ointment in a little pill cup. I was mildly horrified, but tried it anyway, for an overnight application. It was the best thing I had tried in years!! 😸 I now still use the A+D Ointment - it comes in such a big tube, that it’s an incredible deal & lasts for ages!
Blistex doesn't work for me but Vaseline does. But since I found out Vaseline tests on animals, I've switched to this Australian brand called Paw Paw (or Lucas Papaw). Their papaya ointment is amazing, soothes redness and insect bites and keeps my lips nice and moist. It's also not as sticky as Vaseline. Or Palmer's cocoa butter lip balm is really great too. Lip balms are interesting, the most expensive ones don't work at all.
I just started the video, and I also do the moisturizer on my lips, but use petrolatum over it, and it's amazing. Hopefully this doesn't turn out to be bad 😂 edit: Turns out it wasn't even gone over, but it really does help, since the lotion sinks in and the petrolatum seals it in. I use CeraVe for both (as they both have ceramides and Hyaluronic Acid) but it would still work with something like Jergans and some Vaseline lol.
I had the same problem with lip balms until I bought a lip oil in gel. In my country (PL) it's called regenerum lip oil in gel and it works wonders! No matter how chapped are my lips, after applying it for one day they stay hydrated ♥ It's in a small tube, clear with a bit of herbal fragrance.
I've been using this cream from the pharmacy for years. It's called "Bepanthen" in Germany. It as some healing ingredient in there and is supposed to be used on stuff like skin irritations, rashes and surface wounds. I apply it after every morning and evening and that's it. I only get chapped lips if I eat for example pasta with tomato sauce and rub my lips with a napkin afterwards to make sure I don't have tomato lips and then don't reapply the cream. I once forgot to take that cream on holiday and bought a lip balm by burt's bees and hated it. It doesn't moisturise. I still get chapped lips just with a layer of fat on top.
Blistex took me from unable to even eat or smile or do anything because of sore lips to having a normal life! Doctors didn’t know what to do, but the Blistex brought me back to life! 😍
I have found that lanolin is the biggie for me. If it has lanolin in it, my lips will be happy. I tend to use a petroleum jelly substitute I made that's lanolin, beeswax, and almond oil (two occlusives and an emollient!) and that works pretty well for me. I have also found that doing a lip scrub with a bit of honey, sugar, and oil helps get rid of the dry nasty skin if I have gone too long without applying the ointment. Honey is a humectant, so it can help draw moisture to your lips in addition to just adding a bit of sweetness. Good stuff, takes about 30 seconds to toss together from stuff in the kitchen.
I personally use Burt’s Bees lip balm since it’s pretty cheap and basic beeswax balm. I second the fact the simple stuff is the stuff designed to function not flex.
I've been putting my face cream on my lips or my cuticle cream on my lips too before balming them.Honeslty it feels like the moisturizers bring true comfort and the balm is just a ritual.
Also if i pull out a lip balm instead of a cigarette i tell myself it's healthy. The balm and other oral fidgety things is part of my quitting mind hacks.
Since childhood, my go-to cold weather lip product was Qtica Intense Lip Repair Balm. When I was a kid, my I stole a little bit from my mom's moat days. The key ingredient it Lanolin. If you don't like using animal products, don't use this. But lanolin is one of the oldest moisturizers. Because it is made of animal oils, it absorbs and protects SO well.
I have recently found that lotion, moisturizer, and lip balm all work better for me if I apply a tiny bit of water to my skin first. Not like splashing water but like if I wring out a wet washcloth and gently pat my face with it, then apply moisturizer. It's far more effective and uses WAY less product, so my face is a tiny bit less greasy at the end of the day.
i went on a similar journey abt 3 years ago and even spent ~10€ on a MINIIIII chapstick stick that had manuka honey in its ingredients list - it worked amazingly but 10€ were truly wayyyy too much for my student budget. when i finally ran out of it i saw this new chapstick product in the drugstore and decided to give it a chance - it was only 2€ (and a sustainable brand) - and i’ve never gone back since. i have four oyess chapsticks - one in my pant pocket for when i go outside, one at my desk, one next to my toothbrush, and one by my bed. it’s so smooth, leaves my lips feeling soft (n NOT greasy), forms some sort of barrier over my lips that also smooths them out and !! looks kind of glossy so it’s really pretty too :) tbh idk if they’re sold outside of the eu and i’m always careful to remember to bring AT LEAST two sticks with me when i go to visit family in the states bc the chapstick market at our local cvs/walgreens is HORRIBLE. oyess for the fucking WIN
My skin is generally well hydrated and minimal issues, my lips don't dry out or crack or whatever. The main reason is I don't cover it with chemicals. Second reason is I drink enough fluids and don't let myself get dehydrated. And if you have damaged skin and need to help it heal, then focus on that. When my skin got damaged, I found that Hyaluronic acid really helped to heal it.
I remember in college one of my debate coaches gave me a tube of nipple cream (it was new. lol) used for breastfeeding because she noticed I had bad chapped lips all the time, and she said it worked for her lips too. And she was right! I can't remember what it was called, I had almost forgotten about this lol. it was in a purple tube- I am sure it was just lanolin/bag balm type of thing. Oh also, CARMEX. I used that a lot as a kid, I was the kid with the red ring between my lips and chin from licking so much, and carmex soothed and kept my lips from dehydrating, plus I love the smell. These days I just use Blistex. I don't chap nearly as much as I used to, and it does just fine. I bought a ton last year in bulk off amazon- I got the stuff with SPF and menthol because I love the soothing of the mint and also, you should protect your lips from the sun as well as the rest of your skin!
Regular exfoliating is important. Easiest way is to apply a thin layer of lip mask or even Vaseline at night before bed then scrub with a damp baby tooth brush, rough cotton pad, or even a fast food napkin to slough off the dead skin, then thin layer of mask again or lip balm. You could even use a non fragrance moisturizer like eucerin aquaphor.
I frequently work outside in the winter. As a kid I'd get chapped lips all the time. But the most effective thing for me was to change my habits while outside. As a kid I'd occasionally lick my lips when they felt like they were getting too dry, I assume this removes the oils, be tldr is it makes things so much more worse for you long term. So honestly. My solution is just to actually leave it dry, and let the mechanics of your lips do it's thing otherwise. They might not project as perfectly healthy. But I suffer no irritation and am mostly unaware of the fact that they might be a little bit dry throughout day to day life. It's to the point where if I accidentally lick my lips. I usually push my lips up against my shirt to wipe it off. Even while inside. TLDR is that I haven't suffered from bad flakey and irritating lips since Highschool.
Ever since I moved to Sweden, I can only use Decubal. It's a miracle worker even when it's like -20. Like if I was ever an influencer that would be the only endorsement I would take. They are a little pricey (around 80kr or a little under 8€), but they last sooo long, I've had mine for almost a year now and it still has at least two months left in it. Downside, as the roche posay one, it gets very thick in the cold, but if you just keep it in your pocket, perfection. Honestly, get influenced by this.
Have been using Weleda Skin food for years during winter, it’s a big tube of thick, oily cream, maybe too big for a purse, but I always have it in my backpack. Haven’t used anything else that would even come close to being that good. Recently Caroline Winkler mentioned it in one of her videos, so that’s proof enough for me.
I have chapped lips 24/7 for 365 (& 1/4) days in the year. My favorites are extremely thick lip glosses and the recent tube of Blistex my boyfriend picked up for me on a whim. My only problem with Blistex is that the skin just outside my lips hate it and will start breaking out if I use it too far outside my lips. And being precise with a big tube like that on small lips is dastardly. Sometimes, I'll layer products like the more thin lip treatments underneath my occlusive ones. Double the power, even if it takes away from it's staying power.
Try Carmex. It's a pretrolatum-based lip balm, so it's going to put a glossy protective layer of goodness over what you apply it to, but it's also got the ingredients in it to seriously heal chapped lips fast. It's so good at that I'll sometimes apply it to badly chapped skin that isn't my lips, like my nose after a cold. Just a single application will do so much for healing it, it's seriously magic. EDIT: Aquaphor is going to be in the same vein as it is another medicated petrolatum product. In fact, given you mentioned issues with fragrants, Aquaphor may be the preferable one to try.
When the pandemic hit and London went into lockdown in March 2020, I stopped using lip balm on my lips. I was addicted to say the least. Almost 5 years later, my lips are soft and healthy. I still get dry moments, very rarely, but definitely due to weather. And if I ever feel like I need something to soothe them, I put on some face moisturiser or spf. I highly recommend ditching your lip balm.
Haven't tried blistex before as I'm seeing a lot of comments and endorsements of it, I'll have to try it. If you don't have a lanolin allergy, then a lanolin balm can be good, for me however it did not work (I'm not allergic it just didn't moisturise me enough). What did work, and what I personally use is lucas' papaw. My lips have never felt more moisturised, and it can be used for more than just dry and chapped lips (I've used it to treat other skin ailments). I can't recommend lucas' papaw enough.
i needed a random lip balm while i was in the drugstore once-i settled for carmex cherry lip balm (the one in the tube) because i thought it would have some colour (spoiler: it didn’t). despite it being clear, it has been the most moisturizing and best-feeling lip balm i’ve tried-it looks like a lip oil on too which i love! i often wear it over lip products. i hate the lip balms that leave a white residue (like the la roche posay one)😖 so this was a game changer and it smells great too!
I was just thinking about this. Literally every single lip balm I've ever tried has not only not worked, but made the issue worse. Like I'll put on Burt's Bees or some shit, and I'll end up with dry, gummy, cracked lips a week later.

Army issue lip balm. Best.
"What do you mean, 'both of us wrong'? I'm right!"
I always appreciate it when the cheapest option is the most effective.
I know imagine making a whole video though and realising at the end. I appreciate this channel’s very important research
usually is because it has less process and the ingredients are more in a form that our body is more used to deal with.
What I learned was that you could make a ton of money basically copying Blistex's formula and packaging it in a way that appeals more to younger people for double the price.
Double? 5x and you can afford to market it everywhere! 😂😂
What makes you think people aren't already doing that...
@@DampeS8N considering all the other brands are performing worse (at least for melissa)
Spoken like a true capitalist!
Blistex is the brand of choice of every brass instrument player I've ever met. That should be all the endorsement you need for it
And for non musicians, brass players put their lips through more in an hour of playing that most people’s lips experience in a week. Constantly blowing air past them, they get covered in saliva, and they’re vibrating constantly (they essentially blow a very fine tuned raspberry into their mouthpiece for hours on end).
Plus, you can get Blistex unscented, with sunscreen!I'm no expert, but that's been my go-to for decades! ❤
Can't find that specific one on Amazon. Amazon only has a light blue version 😢
I buy the Vaseline lip balm but yeah, nothing has worked better for me.
Yes! Vaseline is a dirt cheap occlusive, works wonders for lips.
I stand by Vaseline for life
This stuff saved my lips when I was on acutane! I’m a customer for life!
I second this. The little tub is best. Also, the tingling is so satisfying to me because it makes me feel like it's doing something.
Yes! The little tub of Blistex has been my go-to lipbalm forever
As someone who has to wash hands a lot during the day the brand working hands has been a life saver!
The L'Occitane cream is pretty popular from what I've heard, but it's a little expensive. It kinda melts into the skin, which is nice
Neutrogena Norwegian formula is the OG, still haven’t found anything that works better without any weird smells or textures
@ I pretty much only use pure lanolin now ☺️ works a charm (unless I need SPF in which case I have another one that works)
LAB MUFFIN BEAUTY SCIENCE MENTIONED 🗣🗣
I love her channel!
Ich benutze nur die normale Nivea Creme haha. Ich trage sie zwar mehrmals am Tag auf aber meine Lippen fühlen sich wirklich gut an.
I put on vaseline every night and morning in the winter, works for me :)
Same. I started putting it on after I brush my teeth too and it has helped even more.
Yeah, I actually find that regular lip balms make me clench my jaw, especially at night (fragrances, maybe?), so vaseline is my mainstay.
Moisturizing lotion + Vaseline is an amazing combo.
I second this!! I usually put Vaseline after washing my face, and it keeps it moist all night/half the day (during the day I kinda eat it away lol)
That's the only way I get my lips to get better fast if they're chapped! I add a layer of moisturizer after the water and then vaseline or some jojoba oil. Works great!
Taha using the drunk elephant lip balm got me dying 😂😂😂
Some people are suggeting vasoline, which is fantastic for sealing in moisture that is already there, but doesn't actually moisture the lip itself. I've used a combo during the winter for years. I layer lip balm that moisturizes (i use burts bees, but have changed it several times over the years) and then vasoline on top. It looks a little dumb, but helps a ton when im out walking my dog in winter
this is consistently one of the best channels tbh
Yes! This channel feels like it's actually informing me about something I care about, and it's so refreshing to see!
I just realized why I find this channel mildly cozy and nostalgic. It's the "3-2-1Contact" reboot we needed.
Yes that make so much sense!
I live in cold Minnesota and do just fine with chapstick original formula. Try the cheap stuff before you try the expensive stuff folks
I live in Wisconsin and I leave a chapstick in my car year round and it can handle being in my car for most of summer too. Original chapstick freaking rocks.
Really enjoyed chatting with you! The petrolatum + lanolin combo 🤌🏻
love seeing you collab with other channels Dr. Michelle!!
The collab we needed without knowing it. ❤
Ohhh! I love your videos!!!
(Okay so I also learned at age four that you don’t share chapstick.)
The only kind I can remember more fondly was the kind they used to sell at the toy store with like Miss Piggy or Grover on the label.
It's really just as good, and more easily available for fine prices (plus less worries about discontinuation).
lanolin works so well I was shocked when I tried it
I've been making simple beeswax calendula and chamomile salves from home grown plants and organic beeswax from a local bee farm.
I love to use it in the tiny little pot. Lately I don't wear make-up, so it's my one little application ritual at the start of the day.
Carmex usually works for me but it randomly started aggravating my chapped lips a couple weeks ago
Halle Berry recommended nipple cream in an interview ages ago. I was so mad at chap stick that I figured why not give it a shot. I have no regrets. It works.
That’s the lanolin, I tried to find a nail product with lanolin a few years ago and couldn’t I had to go with a lip product
Ooh! I love the visual of focusing on the compact and showing the product off in the mirror.
I too have tried sooo many different lip balms, and the beeswax based ones with the fewest ingredients seem to work the best for me, especially applied right after I wash my face
You want Blistex Relief Cream. Not sure it's available outside of the UK, but it's the single best product for super cracked lips

petroleum jelly(vaseline) ftw, you need that thick "extra layer" feeling(from occlusives) to protect your lips when they're chapped so they can heal and become not chapped. im personally with taha on this one, gotta moisturize and then protect

It is called Answer in Progress, not Answer.
maybe that's why taha's method worked? the use of moisturizer to add hydration and then the lip balm to seal it all in would probably do wonders for chapped lips
i agree, i think doing preliminary research before designing an experiment is just always good practice anyway
@@DampeS8N answer in progress makes sense for difficult questions, not for facts that you can find with a 1 min google search, or by watching any of the videos of the experts you decided to interview...

“Sometimes things that are more expensive are worse.”
It kinda works, though.

sebamed’s lipbalm does wonders for my lips

@@arianechasle3750 if only! 😂
The way i got excited seeing Michelle!!
Personally, I recommend pure lanolin. It's moisturising, occlusive, thick and cheap. Never locked back.
Not taha with the drunk elephant 😂
why weren't we talking about that more !
I’m only using them on top of Aquaphor, because they feel nice.
obsessed with my lip balm, this is a fantastic topic!!!
Use whichever soothes your skin, I've started using lip balm as an over night treatment. I sleep with it on. Wash it off in the morning. Then reaply after the morning shower. Keeps the hydration intact.
This video made me hyper-aware of my lips, thanks!
Carmex is pretty common in the US too but it isnt marketed the same way as a beauty product. More in the same way vaseline is
Smith’s Rosebud Salve is my fave.
Yaaaass so happy to see Michelle here, she's my beauty product guru!!❤ She got me to figure out my acne finally in my mid 20s 😊
As production is not worthwhile if you only want to make 2 or 3, I always make a large quantity as Christmas presents.
coming in w my two cents: i used to have the most chapped lips and tried so many different balms, I found that for me the most effective ones were
1. dr akerman's naturals: a bang for your buck, I got mine on discount for about $1.50? they're usually less than 3 bucks and it helped me so much! has mostly natural ingredients, keeps my lips real hydrated and it smells good!
2. Aquaphor
3. Vaseline on top of my lips when sleeping
Another tip: whenever you drink water keep some drops on your lips and rub them together. lip balms won't work if they don't have any moisture to trap
and don't lick your lips to hydrate them! saliva is meant to help degrade food!
I always use vaseline when at home and blistex when i'm outside. Works wonders :)
dark blue blistex lip medex is my go to. it handles kansas weather well. it has a menthol cooling feel but not perfumed. even use it on my hands when they bust open from cold. put it on in the morning and leave the tub on my desk and go about my day.
We love Michelle 🤩🫶🏼
I now still use the A+D Ointment - it comes in such a big tube, that it’s an incredible deal & lasts for ages!
Hopefully this doesn't turn out to be bad 😂
edit: Turns out it wasn't even gone over, but it really does help, since the lotion sinks in and the petrolatum seals it in.
Happy to hear I'm not the only one in eternal suffering during the winter due to dry lips
I use Vaseline, Aquaphor and Carmex! They work so well and are so cheap. ❤
I hardly ever even think about my lips but when they’re chapped, it’s torture. My heart goes out to people with chronic dry lip
Long term blistex user! It just works. Also works great for when my nose gets chapped form blowing it a lot when Im sick. It works well!
1:00 so, his theory works quite well.
I sprinkle water on my lips (or take a small sip of water) and THEN apply petroleum jelly. It’s seemingly prevented a lot of lip dryness for me
I frequently work outside in the winter.
Melissa all over the cinematography this one!
