I was looking for a tutorial that includes pattern making since I don’t have a printer. I’m a beginner and this is an awesome tutorial! So detailed. I’m going to attempt this today and I feel very confident going into it thanks to you! Thank you for this video!
Best instructional video, ever! I'm not a person who sews yet I was able to successfully complete a small bag. Thank you so much for sharing your amazing talents!!
Excellent teaching skills. I'm a beginner and I learn so much from your video. You are clear and concise in your steps and method of construction. Thank you so very much!
Best tutorial for this type of bag I have found! Very detailed. Getting ready to go through my fabric stash to make this adorable bag. Thank you so much Patti!
Thank you sooo much for your patience in this video. It takes me 2 days to make because of pain in my hands but i am glad you don't speed it up! And your voice is so calm. I love it
Patti you are an amazing teacher. So detailed. Easy to see what you are doing. You explain everything. We need more people like you to learn. Thank you so much 💕
Thank you very much for your excellent instructions. You explain so well and being you are left handed it is even better. Good idea to use wrapping paper like you suggested.
I love you! I just did a smaller knot bag from another video and I was so frustrated at the outside seam of the smaller handle (2.5 inches lol) - even the inner seams were hard based on how they sewed the 2 bags together. Your way makes everything so much simpler!! The notching on the curve, yes!!!!
Many thanks for a wonderful tutorial - that was amazing. It's the first time in 30 years I've sewn anything. After recently inheriting my mother-in-law's 1971 Bernina 730, I thought I'd give it another try. The machine works perfectly but I was a bit worried that I'd forgotten everything I learnt as a child. I'm really proud of my lovely new bag (I made the small one out of an unwanted pillowcase) and very grateful for your tuition Patti. (You took me right back to my Nanna's living room all those years ago, where she used to teach me craft and I just loved to watch her sew)
I love this bag and your instructions are so detailed! I always shy away from tutorials that show how to make your own pattern, but you really explain in great detail and show everything up close. If I wanted to make an over the shoulder in the medium size bag, how long should I make the straps, I like how the large one looked that you showed at the beginning. Thanks for this easy to follow tutorial!!
Glad you found the tutorial easy to follow. For a medium size bag the long strap would be the same as the large bag at 14” and the small strap at 4 1/2”.
Fantastic tutorial - and greatly appreciate the measurements for the various sizes! I ended up making the medium sized knot bag, but made the long handle 14". Came out great and love the size! I may even lengthen the handle to 16" so it's easier to get around my shoulder. Thanks for your hard work!
Wow, that was one of the best instructional videos I've ever seen! Thank you so much and g'day from Australia. Yep, we're metric too, but we have to be versatile when it comes to sewing!
I came here to see if I could find some help with making these bags. I made a couple but found I was having a large amount of trouble with the triangular side seem piece (where handle meets the bigger bag portion) and dealing with the small handle loop because it wouldn't fit over the machine even with the hardware removed. You dealt with both those issues giving some GREAT advice that I have yet to see. Thank you so much for a great tutorial!! I feel like trying this again now ❤😊
What perfect timing! I made this type of bag a while ago. Wanted to make another, found my pattern and cut it out. But could not find the tutorial I originally used (and can't remember the steps). Then up you popped with this. Thank you so much for all the detail you include, very clear and easy to understand. Looking forward to your next bag!
Such a great step by step tutorial! All I needed to know from start to finish. I love how you share basic tips on how to handle the challenging steps. And your bags are so pretty!
That's why it pays to watch the entire tutorial. I made this bag last night for the first time and found certain parts difficult. I know sewing, but it pays to know how to sew correctly. I rewatched the entire video today and learned quite the bit. I wasn't going to jump back into this bag so soon, but I think I'm going to make another today. Thank you.
I caught myself on that and so I used a sharpie marker to show the measurements on the patterns at the beginning of the video. Large pattern 1:35. - 1:40 Medium pattern 2:05-2:12 Small pattern 2:27-2:33 Hopefully that is more clear for you. Thanks for your feedback.

I love this tutorial, however, I first struggled with turning the bag handles for the end of the project. I sorted this by turning the outside of the bag handles (after top stitching the opening) using double sided iron on tape. Made the process a lot easier.
Thank you for the clear and detailed instructions! As a self-taught beginner sewer, I have learned so much from you! For example, I thought I had to cut triangles out around the curves. I didn't know that I could just clip the fabric. So much easier! Thanks again!!
That was a great instructional video - I especially liked the information on making your own pattern and also the two different methods of making the bag. Thank you so much. Can’t wait to have a go. By the way I’m like you - I prefer inches - I just can’t get my head around metric…….so I appreciate that 😊😊
Wow! This is by far the very best video on how to make a knot bag or even another bag like a market or grocery bag etc.. Thank you very much for the very detailed instructions :-)
This is so perfect for material I am trying to repurpose from a velvet holiday shirt! I would like to buy this pattern please. Also, you have a wonderful patient voice. Good stuff!
I don’t sell my patterns. You just watch the video and pause on the pattern sections and copy my measurements and make it for free. I have 3 size options. Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much Patti for this wonderful video! You're instructions are so clear and detailed, I can't wait to try it. 😁 I use the imperial system as well 😉
I like your tutorial amazing going to make all three of these bags for Christmas gifts also for myself thank you very much something new for me to do you have an awesome blessed day
Hello Patti, Huge thanks for metric sizes along with imperial. Amazing video with special advices. Will make one bag very soon. What do you think if sewing on a punched pattern for design?
Thanks. Glad you liked the video. Just clarifying your question. If your asking what I think about sewing a Japanese knot bag with a punch needle pattern then I would suggest only if you are using the fine punch needles with embroidery thread. The larger Oxford needles and thick yarn would be too bulky for a bag but great for a pillow.
Took me about 45 minutes to fold over the outside seam of the large handle and about 20 for the small one in order to get a nice topstitch - better results than my last bag...thank you for the pattern making!!!

This was very well done ! I just started sewing since covid and I really like your tutorial video. Very detailed , just my style. I want to make one for my mother in law for Christmas. She carries her bag of meds around and this one handle slipping into the other to close is really neat. Being reversible is also great idea. She can have two bags in one 👍👍 . Thanks 🙏🏻 very much for teaching us!!
hi patti on the large bag uve got the short handle at 4 and haf inches is that correct? should it be 7 inches half the large handle or is 4 and half inches ok thankyou .gary nicholls
If you make the smaller handle 4 1/2” rather than 4” it just makes it a bit easier to pull your large handle through. But 4” is okay too. Just thought it was easier to explain if I mentioned a general rule of the short handle is half the size of the long handle.
OMG! Those handles are HARD! I just did the big one...Im dreading the little one. I need to cut better next time I think. I have a question...you say turn the edges in, what was it 3/8 of a inch? Im watching the video....you showed us with a rule ( what is that called btw?) and then at another point you did it by sigh. Id love to be able to do that! But my question is: doe is have to be 3/8 of a inch? if its a little bigger does it make a huge difference? Thanks!!
I’m not sure at what time stamp I said turn the edges in so hard to answer you. I like 3/8” seams because there is no bulk left over to cut off. But if you like to sew with 5/8” seams then just be consistent with all seams. You will want to cut away the excess bulk after sewing. I use a knitting/sewing gauge when measuring the 3/8” seams.
I so appreciate the detailed tutorial. I tried to send you a donation but I live in the US and PayPal didn't seem very happy. It wouldn't got through. I'll try another way.
I love this! Question though, can I use the shoulder strap on the medium bag? Going to make this as a gift for someone. I think the medium bag is a good size for her.
Hi Patty Cindy again I thought you was going to show how to cut out the medium size and the large size when you said you had another video coming up so am I to figure out from the first part of the video how to do the medium and the large
Hi Patti - the large one you make on this video. I can't sew and I am desperately looking for someone to make me a black velvet one in that exact large (over the shoulder) pattern. I can't find any online. Do you have an etsy store? Can you make me one? Posted to Australia. If so please respond. Many Many Thanks!!
Hi Catherine. Unfortunately at this point in time I do not have an Etsy store and I don’t sell any of my arts and crafts. I am so busy keeping up with just my social media pages for my business that it does not leave me much time left over for other projects.
Would it have been easier to sew the handles, then turn the bag inside out through the bottom box gusset? Can’t think of a reason not to, so looking for an education. Thank you.
There is always more ways than one for sewing projects. No right or wrongs, just what works well for the individual. I just demonstrated the most common way to do it.
I wash my fabric on a quick cycle in the washing machine. I then put it in the dryer for a few minutes and than hang it on a drying rack. While it is still slightly damp I iron it to get out any wrinkles.
The square portion of the pattern is 16”x16”. The shoulder strap is on top of that with an addition 14”. So your rectangle piece for the start of your pattern would be 16”x30”.
I've been looking for an original pattern for this style bag, but all the ones I've found were obvious rip-offs of someone else's pattern. I'll be assured of avoiding that with your techniques! Thanks so much for sharing! Out of curiosity, why didn't you interface either of your fabrics? I find that fusing a layer of Wovenfuse to both the inner and outer fabrics really helps a bag last longer.
Also, it seems to me (and I'm not being critical, I'm just putting this out there for less experienced sewists), that it would be easier to leave a gap for turning your bag in the bottom of the of the lining layer and sewing both sides together except for the gap in the lining. When you're finished stitching, iron the seam allowance down for your gap on either side (or use double sided tape), ladder stitch the opening closed.
That is certainly a good option if you want a firmer feel to you bag. If my video is getting to long than I try to not add too many additional steps. Thank you for your suggestions. Always lots of different ways to turn projects and sew up seams.
Sewing a small med or large bag is the same method. The only thing you are changing is your pattern size in the beginning. You can choose to make the one strap handle short or long on the small med or large bag. Once you have your material cut out just follow the same method.
Thankyou so much. This was just what I was looking for to make gifts for my neices. Clare from NZ ❤
Hi. Large from NZ. You’re welcome 😊 Enjoy sewing your bags!

I love this! Question though, can I use the shoulder strap on the medium bag? Going to make this as a gift for someone. I think the medium bag is a good size for her.
Yes you can! You can change it up however you like.
Very easy to follow
Perfect! Thanks for your supportive comment!
That green fabric is prettier on the reverse side. I would do another bag with the reverse side out
That’s the beauty of these bags. They are reversible so you can choose what fabric you want on the outside.
Hi Patty Cindy again I thought you was going to show how to cut out the medium size and the large size when you said you had another video coming up so am I to figure out from the first part of the video how to do the medium and the large
Yes, it’s the same method for all three sizes. The next video was on another type of bag.
Thanks so much.
You are so welcome!
@@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts Thank you. I was just wondering if I had missed something or was mistaken.
No, you didn’t miss anything.
Very perfect
Happy you like it!
Excellent tutorial! Thank you so much! :)
Thanks Mary and you are very welcome!
When you speak of pre washed fabric before creating your project. How do you wash the new fabric?
I wash my fabric on a quick cycle in the washing machine. I then put it in the dryer for a few minutes and than hang it on a drying rack. While it is still slightly damp I iron it to get out any wrinkles.
Thanks Patti 💕
You are very welcome.
For shoulder bag - do you add 14.5 “ to the initial length of long strap or is 14.5” the finished size?
The square portion of the pattern is 16”x16”. The shoulder strap is on top of that with an addition 14”. So your rectangle piece for the start of your pattern would be 16”x30”.
@@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts thank you
I've been looking for an original pattern for this style bag, but all the ones I've found were obvious rip-offs of someone else's pattern.
Are you going to do a tutorial for the large size bag?
Sewing a small med or large bag is the same method. The only thing you are changing is your pattern size in the beginning. You can choose to make the one strap handle short or long on the small med or large bag. Once you have your material cut out just follow the same method.
