Original Review: • Soul Blazer Review! [S...
Welcome back to The Game Collection. Over 20 episodes ago, I made a review that just never really sat well with me. I’m still glad that I made it because the game was important to me, and helped me get to where I am today. But over the course of 20 episodes I’d like to think that I’ve come a long way. If you’d like to see my original review, I’ll link to it in the description. If you have seen my original, stick around because I’ve picked up on some new points with this game, and some of my opinions have changed. It’s time to give this review a much-needed update! I am SuperDerek, and this is Soul Blazer!

I hear you on re-doing reviews, I'd really like to re-do my Robotrek review.
Great video as always! I never finished Soul Blazer, I'm inspired to now though...
I'd love to do a Robotrek review, period. That's also another Quintet game. I wonder if there's something in the air...
SNES drunk Been enjoying your videos, helped in finding great SNES games to add to classic like Ken Griffey and Great Battle. Thanks
I recently finished this one and I was very impressed with the way the story is being told solely through the NPCs. Not only that, the world building simulation that Miyazaki took over from Actraiser was also a welcoming gameplay feature. Quintet always experimenting with game genres was indeed their strong point.
I like your style of writing. For someone who just started out with making videos, your scripts are always a source of inspiration.
This guys voice should be on radio. There's something about it that's makes me relaxed
One of my Snes favs. Epic music and atmosphere. So many good hours... SBlazer has some blue touch... some japanese sadness... some apocaliptic feeling... It' s a gem.
Super NES RPGs are some of the most special video games ever made. I am not ashamed to say that I have been moved to tears by a Super Nintendo.
I remember liking this game. Never owned it myself or beat it though.
This weird seinfeld-esque music is funny as hell.
One of my fav games of all time.
A very sentimental game to me. There were a few songs that were very catchy that stuck with me until now. This game really could have been more than it was.
OMG SOUL BLAZER EPIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you for not feining anger.
Cant wait for the Terranigma Review :) equal favorite game on the SNES with Lufia 2 :)
You mention changing the instruments to a melody for different areas being a negative point and something you shouldn't do musically....yet I doubt youd ever say anything about super mario world doing the same thing..
Ah the Gaia trilogy, such great memories of all the games. And playing through them on my channel makes it all the better. ;) I'm currently only on Soul Blazer (getting toward the end), but definitely planning on moving on to the other two. Good revisiting of this game! :)
Damn fine work! I may need to update some earlier videos myself, one day.
After 1:56, I was thinking the same things when I first played Final Fantasy 6 (aka 3 for American SNES release).
Great review, loved the original review, and enjoyed the new insight you shared.
Thanks John! I think it's really interesting how playing games at different times will give a person different perceptions. I touched on that a little bit actually, during my first review, Earthbound. Some stories grow up with you, I guess. :)
Soul Blazer was pretty fun. Restoring the various towns was enjoyable and helped make up for the simplistic combat. It seems the spiritual predecessor to Dark Cloud, which was enjoyable for the same reasons.
I still have a copy of this great game, it's short but sweet! The story of the game takes me back to the second half of Final Fantasy 6; it's funny how humans can somehow move on from a devastating tragedy such as the end of the world and find ways to adapt to the new world. Also love the use of colors in this game, a cutesy simple artistic approach!
Just recently subscribed to your channel (after seeing your review of Brain Lord) and I was pretty happy to see this pop up in my subscriptions. Soul Blazer was one of my childhood favorites, and even though I agree that the gameplay was pretty bland, I always really liked the 'world restoration' theme. It was great to clear a monster lair just to see what you'd be reviving everytime. The atmosphere and general feeling of the game is really what made this one a classic. Great review, looking forward to Illusion of Gaia. :D
If you liked the world restoration theme, you ought to check out my review of Dark Cloud. It's pretty similar in a lot of ways, and I think of it as a sort of spiritual successor. :)
Super Derek Sorry, beat you to it, I used to own Dark Cloud a few years back. Don't have it anymore, but it was pretty neat... Not quite in the same way though. And I'm sure I'll get around to watching it nonetheless, just a question of finding some time.
hey hey looks like collection is growing nicely
You bet! Finally I'll be getting a lot that I've been waiting on for a while, when that arrives I might take that opportunity to do another pickups video and show some of my progress. :)
kool bro. cant wait to see what you got in store
Kinda like Dark Cloud on PS2
You tease you...I still haven't played Soul blazer even though I have had it now for 3 years....so many RPG's to play
Oh I know. I've got a huge backlog of games that I cant' wait to play. It's actually kind of daunting. But Soul Blazer was short enough that I was able to squeeze it in between other projects. :)
Soul Blazer is by far the most underrated game on the snes impo, i think the reason its such a hidden gem is cause it had the misfortune of being released around the same time Zelda a Link to the Past was released which is all most gamers had on their mind at the time so its no surprise Soul Blazer quickly faded into obscurity and was never truly discovered till now, i was lucky enough as a kid to know a friend who had it and even tho i owned Zelda a Link to the Past we always played Soul Blazer instead, such a great game.
does anyone know if they have it for sale on WiiU Virtual console? i'd love to play through it again sometime.
oh and great review btw, subbed.
Hated it
But but but, this isn't Christmas-y at all :P Great review. Kind of wished you'd take an extra moment to talk about why it's so special, love hearing stories from RUclipsrs :)
Hmm.. Probably would have been a good idea... Well, guess there's always the next time I review the game! ;) lol
Excellent review. I own soul blazer, but haven't made it through some other games yet, so I'm waiting to play it. This video has me chomping at the bit.
Thanks man! Soul Blazer was a lot of fun, but it was also pretty short. I'm thinking it was less than a 20 hour game, so if you wanted to squeeze it in between other games during a boring weekend or something I bet you could. :)
The soul blazer series is filled with characters who i'll never forget(ark ark ark ark and the mercenary because of the awesome music)
Definitely one I need to find. In all the years I've been collecting I haven't seen it out in the wild. Awesome as always man.
Yeah, it's pretty scarce, and it's one of those games that people tend to pick up. I'd say you'd have to be pretty lucky to spot it in the wild, but I guess that's what makes hunting fun, never know what you're going to get!
@@SuperDerek I just found it in the wild at a pawn shop in rural Nevada in 2023 for $10. Holy cow. I'm pumped!
This game is one of the most beloved for me, i`m so lucky to have bought this game back in the day on a import shop, now my american copy is very pricey.
Excellent Re-review Derek! lol Never got my paws on Soul Blazer but looking forward to your next installment to the game collection! ^>^ (Retro Matt)
Though the theme is the same in the different villages, I feel the dungeon themes are really good. An interesting part of combat is that if your enemy is being hit by the end part of your swing (left side of Blazer) it does a slight combo of damage more than a standard swing. The nodes that the enemies come out of remind me most of Guantlet. .... two cents done....
Big fan of Quintet games, so I can't wait to see the following episodes. Keep up the good work, bro.
Thanks! I'm a huge fan of Quintet, and I've been looking forward to reviewing this series ever since my original review came out!
So cool to see other fellow Quintet fans all over the world, they were truly a excellent company that made games with soul (no pun intended!)
Started playing this recently. Seems to have a lot more depth than is on the surface considering its age. But not considered by its age is the spirituality of the game. Its not crazy religious like Breath of Fire 2 for contrast but its like youre heaven-sent warrior of god if im not mistaken ressurecting the soul of this world. How cool is that?
I was just rummaging through my SNES collection and I found a copy of Soul Blazer and the manual. Never really played through it, but am currently installing a .cia inject version for the New Nintendo 3DS.
It costs a ton of money now on ebay anyhow - $100 Canadian for a loose copy.
Sweet as. Looking forward to the rest of the games in the Blazer series.
Audio is top notch, and you're very articulated. Well informed and interesting analysis, Followed!
Never played this one but I liked Illusion of Gaia and currently playing Terranigma which I am loving, so I will definitely check this one out!
