20 Travel Tips For Visiting CUBA (holiday help, advice & suggestions)

  • I visited Cuba in July 2016 and after nearly 3 weeks touring the island I made up a list of information I wish I had before my holiday.
    This is my collection of advice and suggestions I've made to try and help anyone travelling to Cuba.
    I looked up help videos before my own trip, and what I learnt while there was really not covered in most of the videos I watched on youtube. I guess I'm trying to bring more tips all together in one video (albeit a slightly long video haha).
    There is a lot more to know, I'm sure... but this is a decent list that will give you hopefully more direction to research when planning your holiday.

    I wish there was a video like this when I first went to Cuba in Feb. 2000. I've been back 23 times since. I happened to be there last November when Fidel died.

    • @gayleblackie
      @gayleblackie  7 лет назад +2

      That must have been surreal.... being in Cuba when Fidel passed.
      What was the general feel of the country after that?
      I went in July... 6 weeks later Hurricane Matthew hit. Such a strange feeling seeing photos from Baracoa, knowing I'd recently been there and experienced how amazing it was.... and it was reduced to rubble.
      23 trips to Cuba though! That must be a record lol.
      Do you travel around or go back to the same towns / cities?
      Thank you for the kind words :) It's not easy sometimes getting all the information in one place... I did try to help a bit.

    Your video sure brought back memories of my trip to the island in 2013. Cuba is the most unique place I've ever visited and I couldn't believe how accurately you captured the "vibe" of this place, right on down to your choice of background music: Buena Vista Social Club. Good advice for the first time traveler, I hope travelers there will check out your video.

      @gayleblackie  7 лет назад

      That's a really lovely thing to say, sicilyboy. I'm over the moon that the video has gotten such a good response.

      I hope to go back again someday, I'll probably head straight for Trinidad this time. Love it!

    I've just come back. Trinidad was my favourite place - oh and Santa Clara. These are really helpful tips.

    • @gayleblackie
      @gayleblackie  7 лет назад

      Isn't Trinidad incredible!? Did you stay in the town or were you out at the beach resort area? We were a few minutes walk from the stairs, so it was really convenient. I'd go back there again in a heart beat!
      We didn't spend long in Santa Clara, mostly just to visit Che's grave.
      What made you love Santa Clara?

    • @koritsi56
      @koritsi56 7 лет назад

      Gayle Blackie - I stayed in a casa - Casa Real 54 which was just next to the Plaza Mayor and opposite a great restaurant La Parranda which had live music but this didn't penetrate into my bedroom which was beautiful. I would definitely go back there. Trinidad was the most memorable place. Like you, my visit to Santa Clara was for Che who I'd had a teenage crush on in the 60s. I realise that this horrifies people, but when you are 14.......
      Anyway, I was glad I went to see his final resting place. I realise he was no angel but that's politics for you. Fidel was still alive when I went (November 2016). We also visited Cienfuegos, Remedios and Vinales/Las Terrazas as well as three days in Havana. It's important to read and find out a lot before going to Cuba unless you are just going for a beach holiday. It's a long flight for lying on a beach. I'd love to go further east but from what I've read, the prices are already shooting up everywhere because of (apparently) relaxation of travel rules for the US - though I thought this had happened some time ago. The whole trip was memorable and surreal.
      Your video is really good and you taught me something that I didn't know - the meanings of registration plates on cars.

      I really miss one cake in particular from San Jose... it was some kind of nutmeg layer cake... gosh it was delicious.
      Fantastic shop! Great location too.
      Baracoa is such a special place. I've tried searching for information but I don't know how it's doing now after the hurricane clean up. Gosh that was a shock to see.
      I have more footage of Baracoa on my individual tour videos.

      Haha yeah... I had bought a few Cuban instruments and they came out for that!
      2 weeks without her suitcase was an awful long time though, especially for someone in their 70s. She didn't have important medication and no clothes to change into. It pretty much ruined her holiday of a lifetime. Definitely pack spare clothes in handluggage! haha.
      Thank you :)

      Christine, please do some research about the political situation and repression present in Cuba before venturing to the island. Should you decide to financially contribute to a dictatorship which has survived without any two (2) party elections for the last 58 years, you will do so knowing what you are getting into. A repressive, inhumane regime who beats up women (Ladies in White) every single Sunday after these women leave church services with a flower in their hands. A dictatorship in Cuba, in North Korea, in China is just that. A dictatorship. Cuban people have no free will. They all ALL controlled by the communist regime. And some people opt to visit the country, and enrich the dictatorship's coffers. Hard to swallow, isn't it?

      Gayle, the type of music is Cha Cha Cha (3X's), not chan chan. Also, the name of the song is Guantanaera, with a capital G. The song is dedicated to the women of a town is Eastern Cuba, name Guantanamo. Same town as where Gitmo is located (like New Yorkers, Californians, Texans - not new yorkers, californians or texans). KNOWLEDGE IS POWER.

    Thank you! Great tips. I'm looking forward to a trip later this year and this was very helpful. I loved the tip about the offline map app. I have been reading and watching videos about travel to Cuba and you are the first one to mention this app.

      I'm very happy to have helped you, Hector!
      You are going to love the island. Where will you be visiting?
      That offline map I have used in quite a few countries now and it has been a god send. I don't have the best sense of direction but this app is perfect.
      One thing I will say that I didn't even think about.... we tried to point to the map on my app to show a Bicitaxi driver where our Casa is to go home.... but most Cubans probably never use maps so really have no idea what they're looking at lol.
      So... no much use to guide others - however, great to guide yourself :)

    I went on a Trip last year- BIG tip - take a universal sink/bath plug. Many sink's didn't have a plug- even in hotels!
