  • András Schiff - Beethoven Lecture-Recitals
    Wigmore Hall (London, UK), 2004-06
András Schiff last performed the complete Beethoven piano sonatas at Wigmore Hall from 2004-06 to overwhelming critical acclaim, with the editor of the Guardian, Alan Rusbridger, describing one particular performance as ‘a riveting mixture of erudition, analysis, passion, wit and memory’.
On the day before each of the eight recitals in the series, the world-renowned pianist, pedagogue and lecturer gave a lecture-recital in which he explored the works to be performed. Deeply engaging and insightful, these thought-provoking lecture-recitals, recorded live at the Hall, are available below as eight audio lecture-recitals.

    LECTURE NOTES:
None of the 4 movements are in sonata form.
    --------------1st movt: rondo--------------
    1. alla breve: count 2 in a bar
2.@3:47 the fullness of the piano sound is quite a new sonority
    3. @4:26 the relation of a 1/3 will have a real significance later
    4. @6:37 like a rustic German peasant dance
    5. @8:09 coda: using just the first 2 notes, then just 1 note. Attacca
    --------------2nd movt: scherzo(ternary)------------
    6. starts on an upbeat
    7. @9:33 he's using a simple method of triads, and changing the registers, one hand ascending, the other descending
    8. @10:40 in the middle of this scherzo, is a riding piece.
    9. @11:34 he varies it in syncopation; the left hand plays staccato on the beat, the right hand plays legato but against the beat, the two hands can't play together
    --------------3rd movt--------------
    10. more like an introduction to the finale than a movement
    11. @15:46 a free cadenza
    --------------4th movt: sonata rondo--------------
    12. Beethoven is using 4-bar motifs again, as he does with the 1st movement.
    13. @18:03 the first 4 bars of the semiquavers in the left hand are non-legato, then it is.
    14. @18:36 like an orchestral tutti with different instruments
    15. @18:53 this configuration is not orchestral, but pianistic. An invention of Beethoven.
    16. @20:23 A Bachian fugato in the middle
    17. @22:20 The adagio in the 4d movement is back in the home key.
    18. @23:07 cadenza
    19. @23:20 coda
    20. @23:32 the climbing 4th motif looks forward to the fugue in Op.110. Left hand is imitating in syncopation.
