  • Hemangiosarcoma is a common and deadly cancer of dogs. The cancer tends to grow and spread rapidly, rarely giving the owner any clue their dog is harboring a deadly disease - until it suddenly strikes.
Knowing more about how this cancer develops and learning to recognize the subtle signs of the disease are important for owners, not only to spot a potential problem, but also to be prepared if their dog receives this devastating diagnosis.
In this video, Dr. Kelly Diehl from Morris Animal Foundation talks with Dr. Antonella Borgatti, Professor of Oncology at the University of Minnesota, College of Veterinary Medicine about canine hemangiosarcoma. The two share important insights into the cancer, including the signs, disease biology and treatment, as well as past, current and future research.
This video was made possible by our partnership with TEDxMileHigh.

My 11.5 year old corgi was just diagnosed. He was full of energy, loved his mile long walks multiple times a day, hikes, beach, etc. He started to slow down about a month ago and then the last few days he really slowed down and I felt a lump on his stomach. Took him in, had ultrasound scheduled for yesterday where we discovered he has this cancer. Today he is not doing well, tomorrow morning the in home euthanasia will be here to send him on his way. He didn't deserve this and it kills me. This dog has been at my side for 11 years, 5 different states, countless adventures. I will never find a dog like him again.

I just lost my 6 year old German Shepard to this. She had surgery for cancerous tumors 2 x in the last 2 years. She seemed completely fine one minute then the next she couldn’t walk/stand, her breathing was labored and her gums were grey. I rushed her to the hospital and they said she had these masses on her spleen and liver and one had ruptured. She was hemorrhaging and internally bleeding and there was nothing they could do. She was all I had and she meant everything to me. Going from thinkings she’s good to her being put down within an hour destroyed me, it still doesn’t feel real

My dog unfortunately passed from this cancer 2 weeks ago. She was so happy and her usual self, and then one day she was acting totally different. Took her to the vet and they said her gums are white and she was internally bleeding so she will need to undergo exploratory surgery to see if its hemangiosarcoma. They opened her up and saw the tumor ruptured and spread all over her internal body. The vet said they cant do anything really once it gets that bad. We had to say bye to her while she was under anesthesia. I miss her so much to this day

Thank you for this informative video. I had no idea what this was until a week ago. We adopted our 8.5 year old golden retriever mixes (boy/girl littermates) from the humane society in 2016. While we were on a week long vacation to Alaska our boy Hunter started getting sick. Our dog sitter was concerned he skipped his breakfast and had skipped another meal 2 days before. He was panting more and drooling some. His gums were white. She rushed him to the vet on a Saturday night where they did emergency surgery. He had. a large tumor on his spleen which ruptured. In surgery they found multiple tumors on his liver. He lost too much blood and never woke up from surgery. We are absolutely devastated, shocked and sad. And we feel guilty we missed warning signs and really that we werent here for him in the end. He was the sweetest most sensitive boy and we miss him. We are also very concerned his sister will have this issue. We had her to the vet this week for an ultrasound and blood tests. She is fine so far. She was always the tougher and healthier of the pair. But we all miss him. I will continue to follow you and your research. Thank you!

My sweet pittie rescue was diagnosed in May and the ER vet was insisting on euthanasia. We took her home after they gave us Yunnan Baiyao (a Chinese herb) to help stop the bleeding to get her home for a peaceful passing … and she’s still with us 5 months later. Been giving her this herb daily since the first massive bleed. She’s finally showing signs that the cancer is too much and her quality of life is waning … but I am grateful for the extra 5 months with her and no invasive surgery.

Really appreciated Dr. Borgatti’s perspective regarding this disease and her takeaway message being that it shouldn’t be a presumptive diagnosis with a presumptive outcome. I wish more veterinarians held that opinion. I do think that a large reason so many owners make the difficult decision to euthanize their pet prematurely is not so much the expensive cost to do surgery, (though that is a huge part), but also largely in part that many veterinarians express such a sense of hopelessness when they first present their speculative diagnosis. Not only do they rush to assume that a splenic rupture is more than likely hemangiosarcoma, but they also convey a sense of pointlessness in pursuing treatment. This is just my opinion from my own experience with two separate vets that I dealt with when my own dog was thought to have hemangiosarcoma. One vet didn’t even mention the option of doing a surgery until I pressed him and asked if my dog could live without a spleen, and the second just continuously stressed the high probability of it being cancer and the hopelessness in seeking treatment.. It almost felt like I had to advocate and convince them to consider trying to save my dog. It felt as though they didn’t think it worthwhile to even try to save her, as it would just delay the inevitable. At the time, I knew nothing about tumors of the spleen or hemangiosarcoma. Knowing what I know now, I can’t help but wonder if I sent our girl to an early grave. The decision haunts me. I feel like part of me will always be stuck in that examination room, wondering what if and longing to go back and make a different choice. Our Lily would have been 12 this January.

I felt like u wrote my story. I just put my Leah yellow lab down in early Dec. suddenly due to a bleeding hemangioma. The emergency vet who I didn't know gave me such a grim outlook even with surgery that I made the one second decision to let her go. I've learned so much about this disease in the last month & unfortunately I'm dealing with my other lab with splenic nodules less than 2 mths later. Awaiting pathology. I'm convinced it is a result of chemical exposure to lawn treatments mandated by my landlord. My dogs ate the treated grass constantly in the last 2 years with severe guilt on my part.

Thank you for getting this information out to dog owners. My 10 year old Lab showed some intermittent weakness in her back legs, and her primary recommended an ER visit (weekend). The ER vet did an ultrasound and found the tumor on the spleen. Her X-rays and abdominal ultrasound were clear, so we went ahead with the splenectomy and the chemo. She graduated chemo still clear, and two weeks later developed cardiac arrhythmia. I lost her one day before her eleventh birthday. This cancer hits out of nowhere, and it doesn’t offer any hope. Thank you for this information. We lost our beloved nearly 10yr old working cocker spaniel to this cancer 3 days ago. He showed no signs of being unwell at all. He seemed fine, I have videos from his walk on Sunday and he was totally normal, even jumped in and out of the water trough a few times. The day that he passed, he was runing around the garden with my other dog. It was just a normal day, then I went outside to check our post box and when I came back in he was sitting very strangely, panting more than usual and couldn't walk properly. I rushed him to the vets but there was nothing that could be done for him. A mass within his liver had ruptured. It was less than an hour from finding him unwell to saying goodbye. My husband didn't get back from work in time to say goodbye. He was my husbands gundog, and he was absolutely amazing at it. He will never be able to be replaced and is missed and loved beyond any words could express. The house is so quiet, it's awful. RIP Archie 💔

Now that she has been dx I increased her treatment only to holistic natural medicine/foods! Now 4 months later she is having a great quality of life! You would not guess she has cancer! Being in the healthcare field and knowing my dog, she is having issues with upset stomach and herd! But I pray too! I know she is fighting as much as I am to keep her alive with a great quality of life for awhile left. She was 8 years 4 months old when dx! It was dx right after a horrific traumatic event in her life! I feel as with humans trauma brings out cancer!

Yesterday morning she would t get up from the bathroom floor, wouldn’t drink water or eat. I looked at her gums and they were pale. Took her to the vet and they told me she likely had hemangiosarcoma as they saw a mass in her spleen and liver and her belly was full of fluid which they then confirmed was all blood. HSA could be lying dormant in any given 8 week old puppy yet will show it's first sign/symptom in each of growing puppy into dog individually in it's own time and own symptom. This cancer is just too complex and not researched enough! I pray for the continuance of research regarding this devastating and highly invasive cancer. I just lost my 3rd golden retriever 2 weeks ago to this devastating disease. I am heartbroken. This is my second to die at only 7.5 years old. I started to think about what could possibly be contributing to this high incidence of hemangio in the dogs I have raised here in my home and then it occurred to me that we live in a golf course community and have walked out dogs on the golf course almost daily their entire lives. My Oakley would eat acorns, sticks, grass, etc. Knowing that there has already been published studies linking pesticides, fertilizer, and herbicides, especially roundup, to cancer I am suspecting that the exposure has contributed to my dogs’ deaths. I have surveyed my neighbors and many other families have lost dogs and cats to hemangio or other cancers at young ages as well. Are there currently studies looking at lawn chemical exposure as a risk factor for hemangiosarcoma? Coincidentally, I was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia 4 years ago as well.

Very informative. Thanks so much. My pup recently had a “mole” on back removed and was found to be malignant melanoma. When Oncologist was doing testing, discovered 8cm on spleen. We chose not to have a tissue sample sent out since it has to come out. Scheduled tomorrow am for surgery. Praying it is not Hemangiosarcoma. There were no other areas that looked abnormal.

My dog, Milo, wasn't feeling well so we took him to his vet and they did an utlrasound & found a tumor on his spleen. We elected to have the surgery and it is about 10 days post-op. He is doing really good, eating & drinking well and acting normal. Per the surgeon's report, the tumor was intact and there were no signs of metasis at thie time. The biopsy results came back and confirmed this cancer. I am heartbroken and lost on what to do now. I hear the chemo makes them very ill.

Our Havanese has a large tumor on his right caudal/tail/hip area that hemorrhaged when they tried to get samples. Report was inclusive so they are risking having a punch biopsy next week to see what type of soft tissue sarcoma this is. They feel it could be a Hemangiosarcoma bc of how it bled. I’ve not heard of this type being in this area before. ??

My Toby just got diagnosed a few weeks ago and he's in the category of spleen removal and Chemo treatment for Stage 1.
I took my Golden Doodle 8 years old to my Vet because he had injured his shoulder and while there they examined him and felt a tumor in his abdomen/belly. A simple vet visit turned into ultrasounds, xrays, bloodwork, eco exam of heart. The Ultrasound indicated a large tumor on his spleen (no ruptures). My vet said that his spleen needs to be removed and sent off for biopsy. A week later on August 28, 2024 his spleen was removed. My Vet prescribed Yunnan Baiyo, Turkey Tail mushroom, CAS Options supplements while we wait for biopsy but I was sure that Toby's doctor thought it was cancer because of the type of supplements she gave me. I was right because on September 6, 2024 I was told he has Stage 1 Hemangiosarcoma. Toby's splenectomy was successful. My vet contacted the CSU (Colorado State University Vet Oncology) and they will be suggesting chemotherapy. I have a meeting with my vet this coming monday September 23, 2024. I am so scared and can't believe he has cancer because he hasn't been sick. I am so thankful that I have maintained by pet insurance (Trupanion) because all of this is very expensive. So far my insurance has already paid out over $5,000. It is nice not to have to worry about financial factors while going through this very emotional time. I pray that Toby is one of the 10% that can make it 2 more years. I want to learn more about eBAT treatment.

Rushed her to the hospital and they said she had these masses on her liver and spleen that ruptured. She was hemorrhaging and internally bleeding and they couldn’t save her. I lost my Shih-tzu to this in May. She was gone less than two hours. It had been undetected. September 1, my 9 year old Terrier mix, was diagnosed after her veterinarian palpated a mass during a routine checkup. An ultrasound confirmed it. Five days later, she has a weak hind leg and is in pain. She’s taking pain meds, but I don’t know if they are helping. She has a hard time getting comfortable laying down.
Because my dogs are outside the typical, I’m wondering if there are environmental factors contributing to this horrendous disease?

This is interesting. For my cat was neutered at a young age and started to have difficulties with bladder infections from that point forward. For which he had to get special food etc.
The sarcoma was located between his thighs near his genitals. I know it is baseless and doesn't necessarily say anything, but I'm glad you are looking in to a possible connection between the spay/neutering and this disease. For my cat got persistent health problems around the genital area after neutering.
