  • Since late 1954, the Lockheed C-130 Hercules has been an iconic workhorse for many air forces around the world and probably the most recognised military transport aircraft of the 20th Century. It has served the RAAF for over six decades and number 37 Squadron continue to operate C-130J-30s to fulfill their role of medium tactical airlift in Australia and overseas.

G'day AMAH, I was posted to 486 Squadron (Maintenance) at RAAF Richmond, back in the early 70s. We still had the A and E models on the flightline, decked out in their bare metal and red, white and blue livery. People from other squadrons used to make our 'Hercs' the butt of a lot of gags. The Skippers and Co-Pilots; a great bunch of blokes who were excellent flyers, used to be called 'Truckies' by the 'Jet Jockies' and anyone else who didn't fly them.
Sooner or later, everyone in the RAAF and many others in the ADF relied heavily on the huge range of important missions our C-130s could achieve.
To those of us who worked with them, we quickly developed a true admiration for these magnificent aircraft.
Design wise, our Canberra bombers were my favourite but for their versatility and reliability our 'Hercs' were my all-time favourite. Sure, not the most attractive airframe to most; but I got to 'love' those 'kites' immensely.
I always volunteered for any 'jolly' flight and every time extra 'gorillas' were needed on a special mission to help with whatever the special loads were.
I tried a couple of times to become a C-130 Loadmaster but, sadly, my mathematics scores were too low; the same issue that stopped me from doing flight training. Still, I had a fantastic time at the, now disbanded, 486 Squadron before I was posted out for duties elsewhere. Thanks so much for this video, it brought back so many happy memories.
    Cheers, Bill H.

I got a joy ride in one from Pearce AFB when I was a 14 year old cadet. (1983)

Im proud to be a prt of the RAAF's C-130 history as a former H model maintainer at 36SQN in the early 2000s. Glad to have been part of the squadron and deployed overseas and wear my 36/37 SQN MUC with pride! Thanks for the great video.

Hercs weren’t a terrible flight, I’ve had much worse, but the 707 was the king, although the smells from the galley were enough to make you cry into your crappy cardboard lunch box.
My favourite Herc experience was watching the look on a LTCOL’s face as he and his troops boarded a Herc to who knows where, as 3 RAAF Techos passed him to get in a Learjet for a very comfy jaunt back to WLM after a rescue.

My Mom and Dad got a ride in the Herc during the pilot’s strike. They said it was a nightmare of noise and shaking but they loved it. They especially loved the RAAF crew who looked after them. I was so jealous as I heard the story driving them home on the eerily quiet road from the airport. I had only just got my driver’s licence then.

I took multiple flights in Aussie C-130’s in Afghanistan between Kandahar and smaller airfields (e.g. Tarin Kowt) in 2011-2012. Always pleasant since many times I was the only passenger.

    I worked as a maintainer on the Hercs from 1990 - 1993, 486 squadron and 503 wing.
I still have a certificate bragging about 500,000 accident free flying hours. Can't remember which year they gave us that.

Ridden in the back of the Herc a few times. Can't say it was an enjoyable experience but the Herc has been a mainstay of the RAAF for decades for good reason. It's reliable and can do the job we need it to do.

My first time was Syd -> Alice in the middle of summer. I noticed everyone was carrying jackets and one girl had a doona. Not long into the trip it was obvious why.

In the 1980’s the C130’s provided the Southern service & Northern service. I can remember flying from Laverton in VIC up to Richmond NSW 11:59 while training at Pt Cook.

It has been confirmed we're buying 20 new J-30s arriving from 2026 no?

  • @willdsm08

Other countries have replaced their C130's with those different designs, and regretted it. As long as they keep improving it, Australia should keep buying it. It fills a niche that the others just can't fill.

A400M is much larger and yes, it's a clusterf**k. I think Embraer's KC-390 is a very interesting option that's already having some export success worldwide.

If it isn’t broken why replace it? That old saying applies to the C-130.

I don’t know why the c-130’s don’t come with a refuelling probe as a Standard fitout.

    • @johnmarley6695
      @johnmarley6695 4 месяца назад +2

Fitted for, not with. All the J’s have a fuel-pipe running forward from the wing-box inside the fuselage to the point where a probe kit would attach. We never bothered because the J model without external tanks could fly further than an H model with wing-tanks fitted.
