Good presentation! While appreciating the positive aspects of the open plan, I just want to make a note - the cooking smell (not so pleasant at times) from the kitchen gets spread over all area, is uncomfortable, especially when there are guests. Is there any solution?
I have tried glasses on the door and walls of the kitchen (with optional curtains), leaving remaining area all open. As you rightly said, air conditioning is a big issue; else you go for a big (ductable?) plant to cool the entire area.

Provide a good quality hood for extraction. I dont have any problem in my kitchen.. Hood takes out all bad smell.

Well done, Paul. I found the advantages and disadvantages of the OPEN Plan very useful. I think for smaller houses, an open plan will be very helpful. It would take away or reduce some of the disadvantages too. In fact, come to think of it, one needs privacy only in the washroom and bedroom.
