I noticed the riff he played at 3:12 is essentially the same riff from his later song Voyage Into Dreams. That album came out in 2015. This video was released 2013. So he was probably just starting to write that song around the time this was recorded. Sounds sick!
metalmusician6798 Well its funny because he now uses a 6 string so i don't think you know what your talking about to be honest. All he was doing was restricting himself using only 3 strings.
As someone who is actually from Nashville and knows what is going on, I have to say you are exactly right. We have a lot of talent around Nashville, and JEFF is definitely part of that talent. I would say them, PUJOL, and Diarrhea Planet are all unique artists from Nashville that got tired of being traditional. If you are going to be snobby about someone not playing music "right" then stay away from the Nashville punk scene, because we aren't here to do what every songwriter thinks is the right.
He actually plays a 6 string for their newest album. Music isn't about being amazing on the instrument you are playing, it's about making something unique that you can share with others, and I think he is doing something unique that obviously is getting through to people. I wouldn't call him a loser, because he is doing something he enjoys and he is having more success than most musicians ever have.
There's a difference between an "Artist" and a "Musician". You don't have to necessarily be a good guitarist to write cool music. And on the flip side, just because someone is extremely talented doesn't mean that they write cool music.
"I added the third string to make like, more complicated chords, you know." "If you eliminate the high strings, you're not mucking up the sound." Haha I was on the floor. The tuning pegs are interesting, never seen them before
I cant believe people are bitching about the fact he doesn't know what wood grain he used on the neck. I doubt you could tell me what kind of tires you have on your car, or what brand of lightbulbs you have in your house. I think those are kinda important too obviously. Far more important than a type of wood.
'Xcept if you are a pro guitarist being specifically interviewed about your very custom guitar. I know my car tires are Pirellis, but I don't give a shit, cause my car is just a tool to take me to my workplace. I'm an amateur guitar player but you can ask me anything you want about my guitars.
actually when I saw this I decided to give the benefit of the doubt and check out numerous live performances and downloaded their album "I like you" and it didn't change my opinion at all. I know you think trying to make a stab at me with the whole "mommy and daddy's money" thing is going to offend me but I consider myself very fortunate that I have parents who were supportive and kind enough to buy me my first guitar and amp, you make good parents seem like a bad thing.
I'm not saying fortune is not a bad thing, but getting things handed to you without hard work is. if you are listening to i like you, you dug too deep. Castle Storms and Heavy Days is where it is at. Also Hypnotic Nights is a good alteration to their sound.
Isn't there enough masters of the guitar neck already? You can make music with a pot and a pan. punk school is all about being able to scream your songs and play guitar like an idiot but to play it loud.. if you want to listen to guys that "dont suck at guitar", go and search into the countless millions of youtube covers, metal bands, jazz bands. there are people like me who think this guy doesn't suck.... he comes from Nashville, a town full of master musicians, maybe he got bored of the same
agreed. people who think there's a "right way" or "wrong way" to create art/music/writing are the philistines that don't understand that it's not about an achievement, it's about creativity and putting passion into something. those types may be able to learn to paint, or to play an instrument, but they'll never actually CREATE anything.
It's true, I am proud fan boy for Jeff, but I don't need to defend him because I can tell by my superior intuition that your opinion carries no value in this world.
Whats great about this guitar, is that if any loser tried to steal this, they would almost most definitely be caught. Way too custom and specific a guitar to be pawned or craigslisted.
You don't know anything about them. You just saw this video and started judging him. You probably haven't listened to more than three songs by JEFF, and you probably just grew up as some close minded kid learning to play guitar using your mommy and daddy's money.
Dude!!! "i like you" yes spelt wrong.. and it doesn't have track numbers it has track letters.. do yourself a favour and delete that memory from your mind. They made that album when they were like 13 or something.. Go listen to Heavy Days.. not the one song, the full album.. come back and tell me these guys don't deserve the attention.
I think we could argue that point, it just goes to show that luck and being in the right place are what determines who will go places in music. this guy sucks at his instrument so badly he has to dumb it down for it to be playable to him. just an interesting point thats all.
..... Okay he does know how to make a three string guitar sound good but man it makes me so sad when players know nothing about their instrument (like what the fingerboard is made of....) I understand there is room for everyone in music but this guy is so lazy... its like oh I can't play a 6 string so I took 3 strings off.. I could go on but not worth it.
He doesn't give a shit. Neither should you. I mean, it doesn't matter in the end; the instrument is just that: a tool with an end to make good music. Which he does. I know tons of dudes who could write technical manuals on their guitars, but they play like shit. You're probably one of those dudes, and it's clear that you don't listen to or appreciate garage rock.
Did you read the part where I said he makes it sound good? that was the only real comment about his playing I made. So before you run off a cliff proclaiming and defending your love for 3 string garage rock players take a chill pill.
I don't have an album, but that has absolutely nothing to do with my point that I think this guy sucks at guitar. When you ask me "how many records do you have blah blah blah" it just shows you have nothing else to say so you resort to the typical fanboy response - nice try.
I can tell you're a fanboy and will defend him. I'm merely looking at this from a guitar players point of view, he sucks too much to use 6 strings.. thats pretty sad. He also doesn't seem to be able to tell what rosewood looks like.
Words to live by at 2:30. "Keep that high-hat tight."
I noticed the riff he played at 3:12 is essentially the same riff from his later song Voyage Into Dreams. That album came out in 2015. This video was released 2013. So he was probably just starting to write that song around the time this was recorded. Sounds sick!
All the people who are talking shit below have no clue what they're talking about. He can do more with 3 strings than you or I can probably do with 6.
metalmusician6798 Well its funny because he now uses a 6 string so i don't think you know what your talking about to be honest. All he was doing was restricting himself using only 3 strings.
LandoCowDelicion He only recently upgraded to 6-string. I'm pretty sure when I made this comment he wasn't even using 6-string fulltime yet.
Jake is a boss on guitar, Some of you guys are a bit confused right now.
This guy is AMAZING!! I downloaded Heavy Days yesterday, Hard Core Rock is not dead!

Perfect for recording
"I added the third string to make like, more complicated chords, you know."
"If you eliminate the high strings, you're not mucking up the sound."
Haha I was on the floor.
The tuning pegs are interesting, never seen them before
Great band, great songwriter. I don't care if he's using two strings nailed to a 2x4. He uses it well.
This is sick!!!
He used to play an Ibanez Gax-70
i once build a guitar with no strings, sounded awesome!
Cool setup. I'd like to attempt similar but does it not twist your neck over time just having a few strings on one side?
i don't think he gives a SHIT what anyone thinks of him. That's what makes them awesome!
as I've previously said, thats extremely debatable.
What's the name of your album would love to check out some of your music.
what are those tuning pegs called? i want to buy some
could someone tell me what type of pickups those are and what type of fuzz pedal / amp he uses?
you can see/ hear in the vid... fuzz is a big muff, amp is a vox ac30, pickups are handmade.
looks like John Dwyers sg
anyone know what those tuning pegs are that he was showing off? legitimately interested in finding them
theyre the same as the ones used by gibson on firebirds, i think they're schallers
thanks man, i was actually able to find them
welcome and yeah theyre great tuners i have them
so rad
What an unusual guitar!
I want one
is that a baryton guitar ?
plexi guitars are so cool!
dude how do you have a band?
song at the beginning?
William Anderson diamond way

Because I like having the last word.
Sure are a LOT of butthurt guitar players in these comments jealous that this guy can make music with only 3 strings, haha. Man I hate gear snobs.
I love the part where he says you can still play lead...
Does anyone in this comment section know how to reply to another person?
RUclips started handling replies in the way they do now way after most of these comments and replies were made
Dude is trolling yall. Can't believe half the comments...
god he's awosome
buuuuuuuuuuurrrrrrrrrrrrnnnnnnnnnnnn ouuuuuutttttt

Hey cool opinion. Now shut the fuck up
Isn't there enough masters of the guitar neck already?

i get stoned listening to this guy
Actually good songs, constant touring, and a good work is what got the Orrall brothers where they are today. The only thing dumbed down here is you.
mmm... versatile.
It's true, I am proud fan boy for Jeff, but I don't need to defend him because I can tell by my superior intuition that your opinion carries no value in this world.

way to go just telling people what music is about. fight fire with fire? that works.
But does it djent?
+Noah Burns if it had 43 more strings
shes right though
Ok... Why?!
About what
Ignorance is bliss!
You don't know anything about them. You just saw this video and started judging him. You probably haven't listened to more than three songs by JEFF, and you probably just grew up as some close minded kid learning to play guitar using your mommy and daddy's money.
the last word in a youtube argument, very prestigious honour. I get the feeling you don't have much excitement in your life..
Jeff, throw that guitar away. lol
Bread makes me poop
yes. thats exactly it. and his band rules so who cares?
Dead giveaway that his head is empty from sniffing paint thinner. Every other word is "like"....
fuck off
Dude!!! "i like you" yes spelt wrong.. and it doesn't have track numbers it has track letters.. do yourself a favour and delete that memory from your mind. Jealousy is an ugly trait lil lady
Is this a joke? Why are there only 3 strings. Serious musicians need not apply. Study basic music theory.
nor does your judgement of my opinion, so why bother yourself?
um kind of incel core :/
why not just play a Bass instead, with the correct pedals they sound far better than this does, listen to Royal Blood for a good example
Because he has a bass player
I think we could argue that point, it just goes to show that luck and being in the right place are what determines who will go places in music. this guy sucks at his instrument so badly he has to dumb it down for it to be playable to him. just an interesting point thats all.

You sound like a shitty dude, Mr. Taylor.
How is that?
MrTaylorMusic I could go on but not worth it.
I don't have an album, but that has absolutely nothing to do with my point that I think this guy sucks at guitar. When you ask me "how many records do you have blah blah blah" it just shows you have nothing else to say so you resort to the typical fanboy response - nice try.

so basically he sucks too much to play 6 string so he gets a custom made 3 string guitar.... wow
i seriously doubt he gives a crap what you think about him. art doesn't have rules. don't be a snob.
