Lyrics:
On the far west reaches of your mind all of the things you've done so far
Will come to you for evermore and I am here to make sure
Lightning strikes right between your eyes
As you walk the plank for all those lies, for all those lies
I'm not the welcome guest but the price must be paid and I'm here to stay
I'm the master of illusion the master of disguise
Making worlds disappear right before yout very eyes
Everyday I hide away in honesty and discipline
No good to anyone least of all myself
I can always pull a neat trick from the hat
Breaking all the rules and treading on the fools
Kick out the weak with the rollers and the pools
I follow the river of gold as it flows and will always be at your side
Offering a hand that holds the future to your dreams
But I stay when I know I should go
I'm the master of illusion a master of surprise
Ready to pounce on the weak and the weary should they dare close their eyes
Milking those with needs who'll never see the woods for the trees
Everyday I'll hide away in honesty and discipline
No good to anyone least of all myself
I can always pull a neat trick from the hat
Breaking all the rules and treading on the fools
Kick out the weak with the rollers and the pools
I follow the river of gold as it flows and will always be at your side
Offering a hand that holds the future to your dreams
But I stay when I know I should go
Standing face to face daggers drawn at dawn
You dreamt of kings and queens
You were only a pawn in the patchwork quilt of life
Thrown in the ring to fight
The serpent on the left of me the lamb stands to the right
Standing face to face daggers to the death
Like a thief in the night
Stealing your last breath
Hypnotised by sorcery
Mesmerised by treachery
You have the heart you have the will
But does your conscience fight you still?
Misdemeanour it was only by default
that you got this far
The road ahead is a path of hot coals
dragging you back to the start
For he that has the wisdom
will see through the masquerade
Now the cold winds blow
Where there was once only warmth
As the day comes to an end and I must go
Take my hand one last time
Hold it so close to your faint heart
Part of me is dying with you
I can't stay anymore
The book is closed
As the cold hail rains down on you
And your whole life flashes right before your very eyes
So it comes as no surprise I sympathise
But I can't let you go my childhood friend
And as your final hour comes to the fore
A light as bright as the sun penetrates my eyes
I'm the master of illusion a master of disguise
And you won't fear the world anymore...
Additional backing vocals on chorus by Simon Clew. Additional backing vocals on end section by Tracy Hitchings and Tina Riley.
All words, music and arrangements by Nick Barrett.
Brilliant solo at the end. If Gilmore had have played it folks would be raving about it.
That epic finale...
Neoprog giants...
JESUS!!!!!!!!! It is the best guitar solo ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Speachless
The ending is fantastic !!!
OMG! Excellent song, and what a tremendous solo!
For me Nick Barrett is in the top 5 on playing guitar.
He has a great tone. And he knows what he's doing, very precise and spot on and his guitar lines can be pretty complex. To me he's as tasteful as Steve Rothery and Alex Lifeson (although I do put Lifeson a step above for the way he works with chords all over the scale)
@@bryanerickson2905 So true, he`s right up there with Lifeson, Rothery and I would add Gilmour and Hackett. The first time I heard this solo, I was amazed and I had been listening to guitar solos for forty years, so he was up against some stiff competition. It`s a little masterpiece.
ABSOLUTELY MY FRIEND !!
DRAMATIC MELODIES GET ME STILL TODAY!!
IM HAPPY THEY COME to Québec next June!!❤❤❤
Rothery, Lifeson,Wilson, Hackett, and DARRELL! He's in this top CREATORS, NO DOUBT ABOUT IT!!❤
The more of Pendragon i hear...the more i love them. Awesome tune guys!!
Annoyingly not available on Apple music...how sad as this song and the accompanying album is one of the most melodic rock albums ever made, it really is that good!!!!
I hadn't heard of Pendragon until a few days ago, and I've been playing them ever since. This is totally epic. I have goosepimples.
chitarrista di una sensibilità unica. Splendido assolo!!!!!
that synth solo at the beginning is god tier
Though I've heard about Pendragon for years, this is my first time hearing them. FanTAStic... I'm hearing elements of IQ, and MAYBE some Yes... but very original, captivating and beautiful...
The most beautiful solo of the human history :)
mhh... the one of comfortably numb where do you put it?
@@pb9952 the second
For me, it's the third after "Firth of fifth" by Steve hackett and "Comfortably numb" by Pink Floyd.
@@pb9952 position after. it is the best
I saw Pendragon supporting Marillion in 1983 and hadn't heard any of their stuff until recently. This is good. Old style Marillion.
And Pink Floyd division bell, delicate sound... etc
Wonder if that's where Clive met Mick.
What a glorious way to end an album! 🧡💚❤
You're all right, and add the energy of the courage fillings all your senses... that's how appreciate it!!!
I love this song so much!!!
this is really good
This great solo is quite obviously inspired, without being copied, by Comfortably Numb, the sound is equally clean and warm. All in all, beautiful, lyric, fantastic guitar work. The best Gilmour-ish solo not played by David Gilmour.
Perfect song from the band! Beautiful 😍
this my friends is one of the best solos. Listen to the end and just love it
In my personal feeling, all of this is dreamlike !!
Excellent!!! Epic guitar solo...Great Nick!!!
Perfect album.
And he is good singer
I seriously thought this was Jon Anderson at first.
Świetny album.Kanon progrocka!
i. Master of Disguise 0:00
ii. For He Who Hath Wisdom 4:40
iii. The Last Illusion 9:56
Best of all... really love it...
Band sound is consistent. Give Paintbox a listen.
Merveilleux
perfect
David Gilmour would be proud of that outro solo. I wonder if it was played on a Strat. This track sounds like Marillion crossed with Floyd.
For me, there's a timeline of bands carrying the same prog torch. Genesis->Marillion->Pendragon. I wonder what's next!
Arena
Salutations, mon ami.
Estimado Patricio, muchas gracias por su comentario. Este solo de guitarra es realmente genial. Saludos, amigo mío.
Solo excellent.
Actually with Marillion this is the best prog band in the world
Ayreon would like a word with you.
Solo is on a par with Neverland
@@Normaschthewanderer Ayreon is definitely up there along with IQ, Marillion and Pendragon. Ayreon has definitely been the best in the last 20-25 years though with incredible consistency
Ehm there's some thing that reminds me Phil Collins's Genesis.....
Early post-Gabriel Genesis, when they were good, but not the later drivel.
More Marillion the Fish years I think
Its good an all, but i feel the vocals let it down. Sounds like he's got a cold. Musically i think Pendragon have got something special
Martin Adshead Indeed.
I dunno, I reckon this one actually suits Nick's voice pretty well, there are certainly other Pendragon songs where his limitations as a vocalist are much more highlighted. That being said, though, could you imagine this with Steve Hogarth or Dave Longdon on vocals? How epic would that be?
He's not the best singer in the world, but he's pretty good. And what a guitarist and creative force Nick is.
The vocals are horrible but music is cool
