Great stuff. I have not fished for mullet for years, I learned by accident they took soft plastic fishing grubs for bream. I should really get down to the coast soon and do some saltie fishing.
Very true there often a by-catch when targeting bream or Flathead. I agree I gotta head back out to the coast and start targeting some bigger fish. Weather is thankfully getting better so should be better for both of us soon.
@@fishingmad Bigger fish isn't s much the problem, I catch plenty of big carp and cod and stuff. Just a change of pace fishing the salt rather than the fresh. Canberra is close enough to the coast that I should really make more effort to get down there more regularly.
US here. I've never even heard of this. I grew up on Gulf of Mexico. We don't fish for them, but definitely use them for bait finger size live or cut bait
Mm sadly can’t keep ‘em under 30cm QLD …and that’s a pretty massive mullet ….not sure (as I don’t target them) but I think you can use them on the spot for bait …but just can’t take them home ?
Hi Alan, what size hooks are you using? Had 7 hookups today but only landed one which was the biggest one, others all came off one of them right at the net. I was using standard jig heads 1/0 finesse hooks with 2.5" paddle tails. TIA. David
I went down and tried my luck with some 2 inch Z Man grubs. Caught some nice bream and mullet. All released. Had a ball. Thanks Alan. Would never have thought about fishing there if not for your video.
Really glad you caught a few. Its also pleasing to hear that the bream are back as they went very quiet a few months back. That spot would be amazing if everyone did catch and release there. Hope to see you down there.
@@fishingmad, the bream weren't huge, about 28cm, but a local, who was also using plastics, said that there were plenty of bigger ones. I certainly won't keep any bream. I like eating Mullet, and also they're great bait for other things, so I might keep a few of those next time. I was rapt, I really was. First bream I've caught for a long time. Might head down Monday morning before work.
Monday morning looks nice. Take a look at this video for some inspiration ruclips.net/video/ZP01lHz_36A/видео.html I know there is some big bream in there, video is the proof. LOL
Hi Alan Can i ask where you bought your plastics. Have tried to find someone but have to go to UK or Europe to get Savage Gear Grub Can you recommend a Zman alternative? Thanks
Yeah Savage Gear have stopped selling soft plastics in Australia about 2 years ago, shame as they had some great stuff. Personally id go 100% with a Zman Slim Swim or Zman 2.5 inch grub
Did you wait til the lure hit the bottom before slow roll and pause? Or slow roll mid water/surface? I live in point cook, might bump to you one day 😁👍 also, I had few misses of breams on surface in summer/early autumn. Any or plan on doing breams on surface lure there?
I usually let the plastic sink for a couple of seconds, that about it. I have caught plenty of good size bream there, on hard body lures and soft plastics. Just the bream have been a little quiet there lately, might be because those nets that were found in there recently.
@@fishingmad thanks! I'll try that. Similar technique for the bream yeah. Yes probably the net. Also, they're probably down deep, usually they do that in colder months. Being very weedy, hard to get them up off the bottom, hard to get. I've only caught a couple after watching your video on the zman slim swims.
Yeah that's right. Its only very shallow the lake so you don't need to let the lures sink for too long. Spawning season for the bream start soon, so should be good again soon. Hope to see you down there.
top quality video as always mate, didn't know there were that many mullet there to be honest and boy were they a great size. what are your thoughts on eating them from there, seen some people take them home but really unsure.
Thanks for the positive comments. Honestly I have never kept a single fish from that spot. A mate of mine once took a bream and a mullet home from there and said they were horrible eating.
Hey dude I’m not a very experienced fisherman and I’m looking for a good area to practice and was wondering were this was, it would mean a lot if you could let me know
Thank you kindly for letting me know. I actually went there last week to take some updated photos of the location and update some of the content. Those changes will go live shortly. Thanks again fro letting me know.
hi Alan, can u make a video on targeting the bigger mullet(sea mullet) in this water way, they grow very big and fight hard, but they dont seem to take any bait, very challenging. cheers
Ziqian Li lol i wish u could hook them. i've been told the only chance u have on them is with fly but still is very challenging. the only way people manage to get them is by foul hooking.
My Thin and thick Lipped video recently uploaded, show's how to successfully make them feed. :P And catch them :P Great video - Keep up the great work. Have taken them also on mepps :P Kind regards: Luggy
Hi, have you thought about doing any land based bait fishing videos around Willy( not warmies), port melb, Altona or Werribee?? Love to see you fish these areas
Hi George, Yeah I sure have. I have already done a bream video at fergusons which you can see. I was going to do one near the other piers but they get so crowded. Maybe behind the football ground might be a good option. Did you have a spot in Willi that you usually fish
Yep thats a great idea. Planning on doing that in the coming weeks. Lots of good size being caught in that area. Willi footy ground has been in heaps of reports this last week. I have just been avoiding it as traffic has been really bad lately.
Yeah 100% true the Mullet were big and the Carp were small. Thankfully I caught plenty of bream on the Maribyrnong river today near avondale heights on plastics and bait.Did you get out for a fish ?
Dahm the mullet we have live way wayyy up river. They're HUGE! Getting right up to 70cm or bigger. Swimming in schools of like 12, they are everywhere probably hundreds... They will not bite anything thoug they won't take baits, nor plastics. They are also skittish. Any tips?
Hi Matthew, yeah i visited gippsland last week and came across the same thing. Massive schools of mullet that are upto 70cm. We did land a few and gee they fight heard. Only success we had was using zman slim swimz and adding some scent. Have a look at this as an example ruclips.net/video/HDKxlMwkHUM/видео.html we catch a big one on bream gear. I will also have a vid posted later this week showing catching more on very light gear
Doesn't even talk about species of mullet involved. It's well known that yellow-eye mullet Aldrichetta forsteri take many baits that other mullets will not touch. Would not work with the most common mullet of all Mugil cephalus.
Yeah surprisingly a very good fishery. Good for bream and Mullet. Shame there have been commercial netters in there which has shut down the bream. It should be 100% catch and release location, but i've seen people taking plenty from there
100% its illegal. Friends of mine caught the local in the act and called 13 fish. There gear and cars were sized. They illegal netted hundreds if not thousands of bream. Very sad for such a fragile ecosystem. Will take some years before its back to its best. A lot of the other commercial netting is slowly being banned too, especially around Gippsland, Geeleong etc.
@@fishingmad there's a lot of selfish people in the world. No thought for the future. I just came back from there. Found a few good looking spots. Hopibg to give it a try some time soon.
There sure is. The person caught had illegal nets in several other areas aswell which he admitted to after the fisheries got involved. It can be a great spot at the moment mainly catching mullet over bream but that should pickup again soon. Hot tip try shallow diving hard body lures there. I once caught 20+ bream on a Savage Gear Fat Head crank 38mm shallow diver.
lol haha those mullet r huge! definitely provide gr8 fun on light tackle for sure!
They sure are !!
Hi Alan ... WOW! Well done. Mullet on soft plastics?! Never thought that was possible because of the small mouths.
Use a 1g jighead and a lure no more than 3.5cm and no less than 2.5cm

Mullet roe tastes best when rolled in flour and egg, then fried, and the meat tastes better when smoked! Pick the right wood for your fish

Hi David, usually 1/16 weight 1/0 hook size. Yeah with the Mullet you'll get heaps of bites without hooking up because there mouths are very small.
Thanks Alan, exactly what I was using. Just got to get used to dropping a few I guess.
A quick tip when your feeling the nibbles either stop reeling or reel slow and give them some time to try and set the hook. I find that helps a lot.
Where abouts is this place? Wouldn’t mind taking the young tackers for a flick.
