"In 1940, I lost my only brother as a night fighter. On the 20th of December, 4 days before Christmas, I had the chance to save a B-17 from her destruction, a plane so badly damaged it was a wonder that she was still flying. The pilot, Charlie Brown, is for me, as precious as my brother was. Thanks, Charlie. Your brother, Franz."
An excerpt from the book "A Higher Call" by Adam Makos

Sad thing is, Stigler's neighbors in Canada thought he was a Nazi and a lot of folks back in Germany thought he was a traitor after the story came out. Yes, even folks in Germany who recognized that the Nazis were evil, he still "failed" in his duty in the eyes of many. His only response to that was, "They wouldn't understand."

"Yes, even folks in Germany who recognized that the Nazis were evil, he still "failed" in his duty in the eyes of many."
He kind of did. As much as one would like to laud the humanitarian side of this merciful act, this was a bomber crew. If that crew ever flew another mission, from the civilian perspective, he would be partially responsible for the resulting civilian deaths.

@@DeHerg Yes, but he was also following a code of honor that you don't attack a helpless enemy. Keeping his honor and humanity intact takes precedence over national loyalty.

@@brigidtheirish Just to play devil's advocate, is bombing a civilian target, such as the plant that the B-17 was bombing literally on this mission, killing helpless enemies? How many civilian workers inside those factories do you think were killed by RAF bombing raids? Were they a threat to the B-17 at that moment?
I agree that what Franz Stigler did was honorable, but the second, third, and fourth order consequences may have lead to the deaths of other people in future B-17 bombing targets. There's never a black and white answer for actions in war, it's all shades of grey.
That all said, no one should be subject to harassment over something like this, especially so long after the conflict was over.

@@thisismyyoutubecommentacco6302 Military manufacturing isn't considered a civilian target, or wasn't at the time. A lot of civilian structures *were* hit during WWII, though many of those cases were due to inaccurate tech and legitimate military targets often being surrounded by civilian targets. And, yes, a combination of inaccurate tech and an attitude of "all Germans are evil" lead to entire *cities* being carpet bombed because of *one* factory or military headquarters. The Allies also didn't know that many military factories were staffed with effectively slave labor. They thought everyone in the factories wanted to be there making bombs and planes and other weapons.

@@brigidtheirish So we're in agreement then.
So let's take this down to micro level. You're a german citizen who survives the war, but you had relatives die in an RAF bombing of a factory or an adjacent civilian building. You hear about a German fighter pilot who lets a B-17 bomber go that had literally just completed a bombing run. Would you feel animosity towards that person?
It would be the equivalent of an American finding out that a U.S. fighter pilot let a Japanese bomber go because it was damaged, meanwhile you lost a relative at Pearl Harbor, an unprovoked attack against a helpless naval installation at Anchor that wasn't at active war with Japan at the time. I have to think that despite my better judgement I would harbor some animosity at someone who failed to do their duty to protect the nation, and by extension my family members.
Again, none of this justified sending the man death threats or claiming he was a traitor, but those feelings didn't come out of left field either.

One of the more interesting parts of the story of Stigler is the fact that his commanding officer told once told their wing that if he ever heard that any of them shot down a parachuting man he'd kill them himself. Stigler said that seeing the B17 in the state that it was, he thought that there were basically the same as if they were parachuting especially because he saw they weren't shooting at him in any way (later he found out it was because the guns froze up).

Gustav Rodel, a German fighter ace who was credited with over 95 kills himself over both WW1 and WW2, and lived through both conflicts, is the one credited with the statement.

I know this is a few months late, but as a fairly new listener of Sabaton and a longtime viewer of this channel, I wanted to tell you that your father's story has had a profound effect for my parents and I and it's a story we have spent several hours talking about now. Don't know if you will see this but know that we have the greatest respect for you and your father in NY family!

*"If I ever see, or hear of, one of you shooting at an enemy in a parachute, I will shoot you myself."*
I'm from Germany, and this story is dear to my heart :)
Yes, Nazi Germany was, without the shadow of a doubt, a force of evil.
That being said, please, do not ever forget that there are at least some people that keep their decency, no matter what.
Franz Stigler, "Yellow Two", was one of those men.
During basic training, his commander - a veteran of World War One, and one of the last 'Knights of the Sky', told his class: "If I ever see, or hear of, one of you shooting at an enemy in a parachute, I will shoot you myself." Stigler later commented, "To me, it was just like they were in a parachute. I saw them and I couldn't shoot them down."

You could technically still watch it, just hit the record button and watch it as if you weren't recording. I don't really think many of us would mind, just you watching it would make a lot of us cheer.
