Tigers Sweep Astros, Advance to ALDS Behind Ibáñez’s Heroics
    ‪@JeffSkverskyRUclips‬
Andy Ibáñez came through in the clutch, hitting a tiebreaking three-run double in the Tigers’ four-run eighth inning to propel Detroit to a 5-2 win over the Houston Astros in Game 2 of their AL Wild Card Series. The Tigers, who were six games under .500 in late June, have now advanced to the ALDS after sweeping the Astros.
After the game, Ibáñez reflected on his big moment:
"I know September wasn’t the most productive month for me, but I’ve just got to trust myself. I’m grateful for my faith, my coaches, and my teammates who supported me all the way."
On his pivotal eighth-inning hit, Ibáñez said, "As soon as I made contact, I was hoping it would be fair. Most importantly, I was pushing for the runners to keep going."
He also spoke about the Tigers’ strong bond this season: "We have this connection, this togetherness. Nobody expected us to make the playoffs, but we didn’t care. We just put in the hard work, supported each other, and got the results."
The Tigers now move on to face the Cleveland Guardians in the ALDS.
The Tigers are the fourth team in history to win a playoff series after being 10+ GB of a playoff spot at least 110 games into the season.
    2011 Cardinals
    1969 Mets
    1964 Cardinals
All three went on to win the World Series.
    Press Conference Interviews
    A.J. Hinch (Manager, Detroit Tigers):
On the significance of the victory:
"This is a moment we’ve been working toward all season. The perseverance of this team has been remarkable, and today was a testament to that."
    On the team's resilience:
"When you face adversity like we did in this series, it shows the character of the players. They never wavered and stayed focused on the goal."
    On Andy Ibáñez's performance:
"Andy came through when it mattered most. That hit was huge for us and exemplifies what this team is capable of. He stayed ready, and that’s what we preach."
On the team's chemistry and support:
"The camaraderie in this clubhouse has been a game-changer for us. They support each other, and that’s what makes this team special."
    On the path ahead:
"Advancing to the ALDS is just the beginning. We have our sights set higher, and I believe this team can go far if we continue to play like this."
Andy Ibáñez (Star of the Game, Detroit Tigers):
    On his biggest at-bat:
"I know that September was not the most productive month for me, but I've just got to trust myself and I'm grateful for my, first of all, God. Second of all, my coaches and my teammates who supported me all the way down until having a good result today."
On dreaming of being a hero:
"Never. Never, ever. I've been in the big leagues for a couple of years. Every time, I just watch the Astros on TV."
    On preparation for the at-bat:
"I was getting ready from the second inning. We talked about getting into the cages to prepare for the moment."
On the emotional moment after his hit:
"As soon as I made contact, I was just pushing for the ball to be fair. It was a very touching and emotional moment, and I'm very happy."
    On the team's togetherness:
"We push for each other and keep working and working all the time just to get the results. Regardless that nobody was rooting for us, we just put in hard work."
    Sean Guenther (Pitcher, Detroit Tigers):
    On the win:
"This is what we work for all season long. To see everything come together like this is just amazing."
    On the bullpen's role:
"We trust each other down there, and today we showed that we can step up when it matters."
On advancing to the next round:
"This is just the beginning for us. We’re excited to keep this momentum going into the ALDS."
    Game Summary

Despite starting the season six games under .500 in late June, the Tigers finished the season as the hottest team in MLB, showcasing their resilience and teamwork throughout the series.

I mean tbh though his line looks worse than he did. The HBP was bad but everything else was just weak contact. I’m not too concerned at all!
