The Thief! My goodness that takes me back. That was one of my favorite fantasy novels I read back in high school. I even remembered doing a whole report about it. It was one of the first works of fiction that really got me thinking about world building but I also remember that it seemed to drag out at times. There are 2 sequels (i think?) that I also liked, but i really need to give it a re-read.

I'd love to hear Merphy's thoughts on comparing storytelling styles between novelists and manga. Like comparing how stories are told between the mediums and the tropes she notices. As someone who engages with both, it'd be interesting to hear thoughts.
I love these wrap ups because despite reading completly diffrent books you always touch on something I experienced. This time it was finding a book pretentious though to be fair when the book is titled the genius I should have been tipped off to that.
You really should continue with “he who fights with monsters”! I loved the first book but it gets even better as it goes on. And you get to know the characters way more and some other characters get introduced and they really become a big focus of the story. I would give it at least one more book
I love The Thief! It was just a random book I saw and picked up and ended up being consumed by it. The rest of the series is interesting, too. Also, Tamora Pierce’s books are really hit or miss for me. I think The Circle of Magic series is the best of her works.
In regards to 23:30ish, and how rushed the Alanna books are- Tamora Pierce has commented about how the YA designation affected that, as there used to be page limits or something. In her 3rd quartet, Protector of the Small, about another girl becoming a knight *after* Alanna, when she's allowed to openly be a girl, you can tell when that changed, because the second book is 253 pages, and the 3rd book is 390. I think all of her books since then have also been 350+, now that it's allowed.
Due to you mentioning Morrigan, I binged the first 3 books. Whilst my love for them doesn’t appear to be as deep as yours, Hollowpox is by far the best and has me seriously looking forward to the forth book.
If you want something that's basically middle grade/younger YA where you wouldn't expect it, check out the Tiffany Aching series of the Discworld books by Terry Pratchett. They're so much fun, and I can't want to read them to my kids someday.
I really enjoyed the Thief series. I think the future books definitely had a little more even pacing. I would also say I believe the later two books for the Song of the Lioness quartet are more evenly paced.
I love Tamora Pierce, she's my favorite author, but I know what you mean about the books being really short. Her later books are more fleshed out, and I remember reading an acknowledgement where she actually thanks she-who-must-not-be-named for showing publishers that young readers are able and willing to read longer books.
The pacing regarding Tamora Pierce gets better. The books suffers from publishers not thinking children would sit down and read bigger books so she had to cut a lot when she first started out
I just finished Wundersmith! Really enjoying the series so far. I recommend reading the Fairyland series by Catherynne Valente- it’s kind of a darker, more fantastical version of Morrigan Crow with equally loveable characters. The writing style takes some getting used to but it’s totally worth it!
Last month I read Kindred. Loved It. This month I'm reading the Xenogenesis trilogy. Not very far in but I'm hoping it gets better 'cause I bougth the 3 books🤦🏻♀️.
"i think it was a good book but its not my style of story and I have issues with the main character" is a completely reasonable reaction to HWFWM, whilst I love it and actually really love jason and his flaws I can definitely understand how he could grate on you, and I am glad you were stlll able to appreciate the world and the writing even if it just can't be for you.
Omg The Queen’s Thief series!!!!! Just wait till you read The King of Attolia and the Queen of Attolia (books 3 and 2) this is a gem of a series!!!!!! Omg!!! Please keep up with it, you won’t be disappointed. 😍 I’ve reread this series like 3 times🤩
It's nice to see other Sci-fi novellas out there. For a while, it seemed like they weren't really wanted, but you've got a few somewhat well-known ones out there now. It gives me hope that my endeavor isn't in vain, but it's still tough for a first-time indie. I think it's pretty character-driven as well since it's a light sci-fi novella, I think it would be in your ballpark. I sent one off to Daniel Greene, so hopefully he'll add it to his TBR and I'll eventually get a somewhat more professional review on it in the distant future (I just have a few low-tier independent reviewers and reader reviews so far).
May I recommend a seinen fantasy manga Dorohedoro. I am 50 chapters in and it is so much fun. And as it is seinen, there is gore and nudity. So beware of it.
She just edited a frame from the video when she usually has a picture she takes specifically for the thumbnail, so it's a thumbnail but it was an improvised one.
Coincidentally, I actually picked up Wild Seed as an audiobook on a whim about a day before I heard you were reading it on your vlog channel. I decided to put that video on hold until I finished the book. When I finished, my reaction was "???". It was an enthralling book, and I am glad to have listened to it, but I am still trying to figure out how I feel about the ending. I'm still trying to put my thoughts in order about the book and I finished it a month ago.
As fond as I am of the Song of the Lioness series it's Pierces first series. She gets better and better so her later stuff I find to be properly masterful
You say that you prefer sci fi that exposes the flaws in humanity, but I actually think you can do that just as well with an optimistic sci fi story. By having a story be so optimistic that it comes across as unrealistic or naïve, it’s almost having the reader stop and say to themselves “oh that would never happen, what would actually happen is so much worse and disturbing.” And then it’s almost sad that real life ISNT so optimistic
Hey this is kind of random but wondering what you thought of Shogun as I saw you've read or started reading it. I DNF it as there were a couple things that were really not working for me and the page count was really intimidating and am wondering if I should pick it back up as the concept does sound incredible.
You should have kept thumbnail which said no thumbnail to prove your point that there is no thumbnail. By making thumbnail written on your screenshot is thumbnail in itself which makes it paradox.
Hello merphy. Love your channel and love that you are taking vacation. Btw i have questions that like u read a novel and watch its adaptation. Do u expected the same scenario or something different. Ngl I would love if u do this type of video as experiment.
I'm glad you finished HWFWM, Merph! The main character is honestly the worst part of the story, but I'm not a character reader so I guess I didn't really factor him into my enjoyment of the world and it's premise. I feel the same way about Jason as I did about Katniss in the Hunger Games books. While I don't like their personalities I was able to understand their decisions, for the most part. As the series progresses we learn a lot more about the world and how it relates to our own and it's rather interesting, so if any of you are on the fence about it, I recommend trying the first and deciding for yourself if Jason is a deal breaker for you.
I just read Wundersmith in March myself and really enjoyed it as well. I do think book 1 was a bit better but the world is just so magical and I really enjoy it!
For me, Oda is pretty poor at pacing. Regardless of how hype a flashback ends up being, it is a little painful to leave the climax of an arc to go to a flash back that can last many chapters. I really wish he would take a lesson from western publishing and break up the flashbacks a little mor throughout the arc.
@@2ntwins Yeah that's true. But would it change if you were to look at the bigger picture instead of reading it weekly? I mean I completely understand what you mean though. I suffered through it.
@@bazadam6635 Probably but i would prefer him to adjust to the format of the weekly serial than make pacing worse because of it. It's not really even just the flashbacks. Like while I liked this weeks chapter, i am sure I am not the only one who said "Really?!" when i saw them cut away to Raizo
He tones it down for a couple books, but he kinda bounced back to his old self in books 4-5. Understandably, considering his situation; but I just want to temper people's expectations if his personality is a deal breaker for them.
