      He spent waaaaayy too long to pickup amd drop off. At most I spend an hour for each. Seems like 4.5 gallons is way too Mich driving as well. I typically see maybe 1 gallon used each night. Its true though, if you live too far outside of the city, it gets less profitable.

    • @patrickj978
      @patrickj978 5 лет назад +16

      I would say when buying chargers it would depend on how many scooters you are allowed to have on hand.
      For instance I have a cap of 25 scooters that I'm allowed to have on hand at one time and I have 25 chargers.
      As far as how much money is made it depends on how many you get and how often you do it but I tend to make anywhere from $70- $120 a night I usually pick up scooters between 9:00 and 10:00 and then have them charged and dropped off by 12:00 or 1:00

Same with drop off.. release them in heavy traffic places all at once. Bruh come on...and you spent over 4 gallons. And probable spent most of your time on the video. Could have drove straight to Santa Monica and performed this task. Round trip from Pasadena to Santa Monica should be less than 3 gallons. Even less than 2 gallons. This one is more of an efficiency thing, I've known people that know all the hot spots and they do this without a vehicle, they'll go to the first one, then use that one to ride around and pick up 3-4 more by stacking those ones sideways on the one they're riding. They can do a 4-5 scooter run in under well under an hour, I've heard of people doing 20-35 scooters in a single night which assuming it was $6 payment for each one like you mentioned in the video, that's $120-210 for 3-5 hours minus electricity cost but that cost is minimal by the sounds of your cost on the 5.
    Also, you didn't make $3.5 an hour, you technically made $5. That original postal cost is a one time fee. I think this is one of those jobs that comes down to really knowing where to go, how to do it and how to cut out as much excess everything as possible.

    • @chengzeng5738
      @chengzeng5738 5 лет назад +8

      You're forgetting the time it takes to return the Scooters, and the fact that you only get the full payment if you return them over 95% charged.. if you're not driving them back to their Drop off spots, most of them will fall under 95%and you will be deducted. Also don't forget it takes time to physically charge these things, restack them, etc. I'm not saying you can't make money doing it, specially if you have a system, but it's not anywhere as lucrative as you describe

    • @ObbyShaggz
      @ObbyShaggz 5 лет назад +6

      @@chengzeng5738 My numbers there are literal, time taken may be more but +1 - 2 hours and that's still okay.
      The drop off is the same logic as the pickup, stack the scooters on one, go out and drop them off. If you say had 25 scooters that night, you would get paid for 24 as the 25th scooter was your ride.
      The drop off time would really depend on location, some areas in LA literally have 30-50 of these within a mere few blocks; the same blocks have residental. You have someone that lives there and doing this there, dropping off 24 scooters could easily take less than a hour.
      The time it takes to charge is pretty irrelvant as someone doing this seriously is going to have 10+ chargers.

    • @chengzeng5738
      @chengzeng5738 5 лет назад +1

      I understand your theory, but in practice it takes much longer. Pickups would take 1 hour per round of 4. So 15 mins to location, 30 to find and stack, 15 back to base. Scooters aren't always findable, or eligible for pickup, especially high value ones so it's not instantaneous. As for drop offs, you can only drop off 4 max in one drop off location, sometimes less,locations and capacity are found through the app, it would take closer to 4 hours to drop off 24 scooters, as you would have to return to your storage location to pick up the next few rounds.10- 15 mins to stack and get to location, 15-20 to drop off depending if it's multiple locations (locations can be less than 4), 5 for photo confirmations, 10-15 minutes back to base. That's 40 mins, on the conservative side, for each round of drop offs. 6 rounds (of 4) is 4 hours. Drop off time is 4-7am ( 3hrs only). That will only allow only 18 scooter drop offs by my estimate with the stack method. This is just drop offs. Even if you live close, stacking is only 4 at a time.. and storing and charging is not as effortless and quick as you would expect. I would add at least another hour for time taken to setup 20+ scooters for charging. Even if you had 24 chargers, you still need to STORE/ setup scooters, connect 2-4 power strips, plug them all in, don't overload the circuit. Unplug and reconnect. I've done this, with 8 scooters takes a minute. Unfortunately for me this aspect took forever because I was storing in a basement, lugging each scooter up and down everytime, took forever and killer on the legs. Add shower time, after you are done with pick ups, you must shower, it's not optional, this is dirty, stinky, sweaty, nasty work. You smell like a dump truck. 30 min shower and disposal of clothes etc. And when returning from drop offs the same. Add an hour. For 24 scooters, by my calculations, 6 hours for pick up, 4 hours for returns, 1 hour for setup and charging, 1 hour shower/cleanup. For 24 scooters, you're looking at close to 12 hours of work, $6 per scooter avg. $144/12= 12/hr. Minimum wage in CA. Plus this would be 7pm-7am, graveyard. However, this wouldn't even be possible as drop offs are only 3 hour window, 4-7am, allowing for only 18 scooters. You could do 20 pickups in 5 hours. Maybe 20 returns in 3 hours if you hustle. 1 hr storage/ setup and charge. 1 hr shower. That's $120/ 10 hrs. Either way you cut it you're looking at about $12 per hour. That's if you live close, if you have a system down, and have storage room. As it is, maybe worth it if it was literally your only income option. You really have to hustle, it's not easy money at all
      But it's nice that you are on your own schedule. It really is independent work. Almost makes it worth it. I hope it becomes more lucrative, eventually. Especially considering that you're working the graveyard shift. By the way electricity costs are next to nothing.

    Charging scooters can be a very profitable side hustle, especially for those with lots of chargers, large vehicle and live in an area where there are an abundance of bird/lime scooters. I'm a charger for both companies and have a total of 16 chargers. I have been a charger since July of 2018. I average around $100-$125 per night. I probably spend a total of maybe 3 hours picking up an dropping off scooters each day. Even while taking some nights off, I still make around $3000 per month as a side job. I'm not bragging about how much I make but to generalize n say it's not worth being a charger or this is a scam is just completely false. I prefer charging limes only because you can drop them off any time of day unlike bird which can't be released until 4am. Plus, too many people hoard birds which ruins it for all other chargers. Birds network really sucks bad. I spend about an hour or so loading up my old 4dr sedan with about 10 to 12 limes and then drop those off to charge and go pick up some more. Between midnight and 1am, I'll drop off or stack 3 or 4 at a time and ride as many as i can within walking distance (quite a few spots really close to me). So by 1am, I will have dropped off all my first round of scooters (10-12)and then go to bed. I'll hit the road around 6am and on my way to work, drop off the remaining 8 to 10 scooters before 7am and be done. I drive less than 15 miles collecting n dropping off scooters per day. If I had a pickup truck or a beat up SUV, I could make more but I'd rather not ruin my brand new SUV so I just drive my old 4dr and load them in the backseat and over the front passanger seat as well. I have a well paying job but this scooter charging income has become my disposable income. You just have to know the ins and outs of being a charger and what areas to target so you're not wasting bunch of time driving around. Less scooter chargers out there, better for me. More folks need to quit. I'll continue gettin it while the gettin is good. It's not gonna last.

    You sent 2.5 hours and only picked up that many scooters? How many people who are knocking on these types of jobs and calling them scams have actually put time and effort in figuring out how to make this work?
    Is it super easy? No! Is it worth it? Absolutely! I picked up 25 scooters in just under an hour and dropped them off in another hour add another 30 min to hook everything up. Let say 3 hours just for good measure. 25 x $6= $150 ÷ 3 hours. That's $50 an hour. I will admit the first week was difficult and I wanted to quit because I wasn't getting very many picked up and it took me forever.
    However, when you started a new job, did you have it all figured out in the first few days, probably not. I saw the potential and was determined on how to make it work, and I did.
    I was picking them up in a Honda Prelude (2 door). I was packing up to 10 at a time. Then I bought a hitch and a trailer. Now I can pick up triple that. If you are thinking about doing this, try it for yourself. Don't let someone else's experience sway your decision. Not even mine. I would say give it at least a month doing it 2-3 nights a week and then make an informed personal decision.
    You can make good money doing this, but it is work. And just like anything else, you get what you put in. If you are hard working hustler who is will to work later in the night and wake up before most people are up then the odds are in your favor. If you are lazy and think you are going to get rich doing this you are confused at best.
    There are struggles in this hustle, but, I'd rather be struggling for myself, than making money for someone else and hate what I do. There are people taking advantage of the system, like hoarding and people picking scooters up before they are suppose to. Eventually, they will lose because greed will weed them out and they will get caught and banned. Hoping Bird will do something but, what am I going to do, complain? What has that ever gotten anyone?
    I will continue to grind and when I see that it isn't profitable then I will make the desicion to find another side hustle. I agree with the comment someone made about this not being someone's sole source of income ( though it could be) I say that because we never know when something will not be there anymore.
    Opportunities come and go, however, your ability to learn something new, adapt and ride that wave will always put you at an advantage over those who aren't willing to humble themselves.
    Hope to hear any input or questions. I will start making some videos for the scooter hustle. I just want to help people. Thanks!

    Bump up to a mini-van or your car still. The install few more batteries tied into the van/car alternator & bigger power inverter. Create holders to keep them up-right & plug-in as you pick-up in your van or like you did in your car(just might be more hassle if the lower ones charge faster & have to unstack to get them out of the car). Then as you drive it charges up.
    Now also do the Food delivery service or other late night APP delivery service also in same area or close to it. As you pick-up/deliver food or what not, you also pick up Scooters & charge on the go, then as you pickup & deliver food, drop off as soon as fully charged & maybe pick up more on your list to charge. IF you get an idea on the time frame to fully charge a dead battery to full, gives you an idea of how many you can do thru out the night, even if you pick one up few hours before it has to be dropped.
    Trying to tie into another operation at same time, that way the engine/gas being used to make money for 2 operations at once.

      ya, if you can spread out the pickups as you go & it will charge as you do the other stuff which will be the semi-core money maker, with these charges as a bonus in-between while waiting for orders and since engine will be running as deliver orders, it keeps the batteries up to charge the scooters. That way no time is wasted on either one, they kinda tie in together.

      True. The only good thing (here in Australia at least) is that fuel and vehicle maintenance etc all become deductible as does the cost of electricity to charge them etc. Theoretically this makes clothes (hi vis) boots, tools and anything else connected with it free. That being said I still think a factory job would be better.

      The guy isn't afraid to work and try new things which is pretty cool. Culturally, he doesn't consider his dog as a possible food source so he is a winner at all levels I reckon. I have very simple criteria hehe.

    I wonder if there are adapters that would let you charge these using Electric car charging stations. I think that would be really efficient around L.A. at night.

    Thanks, Man. I'd be concerned about being accused of stealing the bikes - did you have some proof from Lime that you were legit? Income would improve slightly over time as your charger costs are a one-off initial fee and you get to know the best pick-up and drop-off locations but its not a get rich quick solution!

      I fit 10 with ease in my Escape. I just go downtown, find a free parking space and then harvest on foot. If I'm feeling lazy, ill grab a scooter to harvest the others. 2-3 hours and I make about $50 after fuel costs. 5 nights a week and I'm profiting $250 a week before taxes for 10-15 hours of work. I haven't charged any yet, I just do the retrieval and drop off tasks.

    It gets better when you do it longer. You can see on the map which scooters are gonna be easy, and which are gonna be hard. And the more chargers you have the more you can make. I know a guy that fits 18 in his Toyota Prius every night!

    also if you have a van build a rack so you can put scooters in upright with handle bars to onw side and then you can slide scooters in upside down on the rack with the handle bars facing the other way it would double your carry capacity. Onder o hit it on the nail.
    this side hustle is all about location ,location, location where you are to where the lime hubs and usage is.
