Early years
LeBron James is an American Basketball superstar. LeBron was born in Akron, Ohio on December 30th, 1984. LeBron and his mother Gloria moved around quite a lot when he was a child while Gloria searched for a steady job. Gloria did not think this was fair on LeBron. At the young age of nine years old LeBron moved in with Frank Walker, the local youth football coach, and this is when LeBron’s sporting career began. LeBron James, often referred to as ‘King James’, is now seen as one of the greatest NBA basketball players of all time.
Road to success
Supporting the community
In 2004 Le Bron set up ‘The LeBron James Family Foundation’. He organised events to support the families in Akron in having positive family experiences. In 2011, LeBron changed the focus of his charity to a project called the ‘I PROMISE’ programme. The 'I PROMISE' initiative aimed to help children from
disadvantaged areas to succeed in school. The programme supported the families in many ways, providing necessary resources, educational and emotional support. LeBron took the project even further by awarding scholarships for four years of free college tuition at the University of Akron, an opportunity that some students from these communities may never have dreamed of before then.
