  • Whether you're new to growing or just new to the Land of Enchantment, there are some things that you need to know about what makes our "soil" (dirt?) different. This episode I'm addressing the basics of pH, organic matter and why we don't really have it, and mulching.
We have a broad range of soil types across the ABQ valley. For instance, if you live down by the river, you're likely to have richer soil and may not have to do any amending. But if you find that you're dealing with sand and clay, this video is for you!

I got some raised beds for my yard and filled them with bulk raised bed mix from Soilutions in the south valley, they have really good prices for bulk soil and compost. Thank you for making New Mexico gardening videos! There’s not enough information out there for our climate! I appreciate you!

I just discovered your channel. I’m just southeast of Los Lunas. The land I bought 5 years ago was destroyed by the previous owner-scraped bare for a decade. Lots of geology, not much actual living soil. Our organic matter blew/washed away or decomposed long ago. I’m pounding down dead vegetation, mulch, compost etc. But I’m really trying to get roots in the soil. We’ll get there or die. I’m old, disabled and too feisty to quit. Subscribed!

I feel like bad land stewardship really shows more dramatically here than other places...and it's so hard to come back from. Good luck to you in your efforts!

Hi Mrs. Bell, came across your channel over this past October 2022 weekend. Thank you for putting these videos out. It was like you said, I'm watching great RUclips channels, but they don't live here in Albuquerque. Have a great fall time

fun fact: there is two stalk palm trees you can grow in albuquerque BUT your windmill palm needs to be at least 1 1/2 years old depending on the direction outside

Another fun fact: Palm trees aren't actually trees! They are part of the grass family.

Hi so glad to find a local channel. Moved here from Scal year ago what a shock on the growing climate. I've read to amend my clay soil with gypsum I'm in the beautiful Chimayo valley.

It's tough! But your dirt has a lot of nutrients if only they can be accessed by the plants.

Now i know why i did the things i did. Some of my exes got mad at me and called me lazy for not planting right away and me always wanting to get the soil ready, even if it took me the year to get ready and next year start. I just never knew why i did that. I always felt it was something you had to do.

You're a natural! I don't believe in "lazy" humans. It's not a natural state for our species.

I've been visualizing the name Alburqueque in different meditation and even past-life regression sessions and after my visit to Santa Fe...(I think last year) I learned about a city in NM called Alburqueque and, developing a sudden desire to learn about soil, plants and animals I finally asked RUclips and Google about these stuff and so the algorithm brought me to this channel and episode; arguably one of those good things that online medias and their algorithms that is not political BS, lol. Anyway, I'm definitely subscribing and will like to come learn from people like this lady in my next visit to this land that keeps calling me over

Lots of free woodchips in ABQ as well the tree trimming places just give that away.

True! Baca's Trees comes to mind, but really anyone who does tree removal works. There's also Chip Drop online where you can order a free delivery. Thanks for sharing!
